Looks like I will spend a lot of my time ignoring it - none of the above services are even vaguely important to me when cruising. But that's fine, so long as it opens my cabin door when I want it to (hopefully we can leave the problem of demagnetized cruise cards behind), and doesn't stop me doing what I choose to do, I will pay no mind to it.

While it appears to me that you're making this a statement of fact, in reality, unless you have some source of information deep in the bowels of the Princess management structure, what you have written is strictly your opinion, nothing more. It appears to me, and yes, this is my opinion, nothing more, that you don't have a very high opinion of what Princess' opinion is of it's customers or care about how they are treated on their ships. To listen to you, the only thing they care about is how much money they can get from them, nothing else. Of course, one of their concerns is income, that is what a business is established to do, make money for their owners. I doubt if there are very many companies around who are in business just for chuckles and grins. But, and this is a big but, if they don't take care of their customers, they aren't going to be a viable company for very long and they will soon be gone. Would any of us agree with everything that Princess or any other company does? Probably not, but that doesn't mean that one or any of us are more correct than those who made the decision to go with the change from cruise cards to medallions. It does appear, however, that Disney's decision to go with their program seemed to work for them. Will everybody who cruises Princess like the new program? Probably not, but if they don't, they can always go to another line that still uses the cruise card method. Might the new program hit major snags and perhaps fail to work as it was expected? Yep, sure might. But to ascribe all of the reasons that Princess has gone to a new program strictly to financial greed and to heck with the passengers/customers is ludicrous, to my way of thinking.

Me, I'll wait and see how it works before I make a decision as to how good or how bad it is. I suspect it will have things that most of us will use and things that we won't. But I sure don't see it as the "big brother" that some do.

One person's opinion.

Tom

Very well stated.....:):):)

Same for us. It's been years since we've done anything that caribill has listed except for occasional reservations. The one feature that looks good is finding another person on the ship.

Now that I can use. :)

It should not come as a surprise that "Ocean Medallion" is designed for only one thing: increase Princess revenues. It is not designed as a benefit to "guests," for improved security, or to enhance guest experience onboard. It is designed to help princess separate your from your money by facilitating more shop purchases, faster beverage purchases and encourage the making of spa appointments. Period. Everything they tell us about "Medallion Class" is marketing.

I don't follow this logic. I'm still not going to buy gold by the inch, $10 watches, over priced pictures and tee shirts or book spa appointments just because I have a medallion. I don't spend any more of less at home just because I can tap my smart phone to a signature pad in the store. The only people who will spend are the newbies that want to capture every moment and experience all that they can in 7 days or more. That's what I did in 1986 when the only function of the key was to unlock your stateroom door.

Sounds like an excellent attitude. If one doesn't want to use the "features" then don't use them. Use it to open the door just like with the cruise card (only hopefully slightly easier - especially if your hands are full) and be happy that the demagnetizing issue is a thing of the past.

There are youtube videos showing all the things the medallion will do. It is a concept; and will become reality in November. Processing thousands of passengers on and off ship does not sound like a revenue builder to me. Nor does electronic keys to your cabin. Hotels and Disney have been doing this already. I use my iPhone to open my hotel room; it is no big deal. It's fun. But as some have mentioned above about the medallion is only for Princess to make more money. I just gave you two things it will do and does not make Princess any more money; but it does make a guest happier. Why? Because I only have to walk near my cabin door and it will unlock. I only have to walk by security going onto and off the ship. Nice.

They'll still have to check your face to see if it matches the Medallion but it will be faster for sure.

Actually, it is in a way. While it may not increase income, it certainly may reduce expenditures. How? Well, let's look at the processing of passengers onto a ship. Let's assume that we have 3000 passengers getting on a ship and that it takes 4 1/2 to 5 hours to process those passengers onto the ship. If most of the processing is done by the passengers themselves at home before they ever reach the pier and the only thing that needs to be done at the pier is to scan the medallion, that would greatly reduce the time required to get the passengers onto the ship by an estimated 50% or more (I'm basing this on how long it takes now to scan a passport, check a health form, get the cruise card and send them on their way to the ship. Now, since the medallion is not going to be able to speed up the checking of luggage and moving them onto the ship nor is it going to have any effect on the loading of equipment and supplies onto the ship, it may not affect the time in port, but it may very well affect the number of people required to process the passengers themselves which means the number of employees the 3rd party company handling those passengers will not need nearly as many employees to do that processing which will reduce the amount of the contract that Princess will have to pay for. Multiply the number of employees times the reduced number of hours times hourly rate (which will vary from $7+ to $15+/hr (depending on location) times the total number of days at all the different ports for a complete year and that could be a considerable amount of money saved! How long will it take to recoup the expenditures made to develop the software, refit the ships, etc.? Good question, but I would bet that all this was computed long before the project was finally approved. I just hope that everything works out like it's expected to with only a few (hopefully ) problems!

Forgive it it has been answered already, but how will the medallion work in the casino? Currently your S & S card is used to establish your account on the slots and also holds your bank, transfers money, etc. Will there be a separate "players" card ala land casinos or will the machines have to be retrofitted to work with the medallion? Thoughts.

Oh My God! You mean, Princess, as a business, is trying to increase their revenue?! What is wrong with Princess?! I just don't understand why they are trying to be even more profitable. I guess I should go to another cruise line because I'm sure they aren't trying to increase revenue on the backs of their cruisers!

Ok, kidding aside, I personally probably won't use many of the mentioned option with this but I am certainly not upset nor concerned about anything to do with the medallions. You never know, I might actually use some of the options that are meant to improve my experience but I am not going to judge this before it even takes place. I look forward to hearing from others who will experience this before me (my first ocean medallion cruise won't be until my Royal cruise in January 2019) to get real experiences, not panicked prejudgments of this.

I totally agree.

We were trying to decide between Princess and Holland America because we wanted to upgrade from Carnival. It was this new program that swung us to Princess. Like you we'll have to wait a while (Dec 2018) to experience it 1st hand.

As a tech nerd I can envision endless possibilities of how far they can expand it in the future. IoT is coming to all facets of our lives. From smart homes to vacations.

No one really knows at this point but you can bet Princess will retrofit the machines to work with the Medallions in one way or another, just like the cruise cards did.

They did mention that you'll be able to gamble in other locations so the Medallions will surely work.

I agree about the new tech but there are more mundane reasons for choosing Princess over Hal such as a refrigerator in every cabin. Hal provides them for suites and balconies. I "think" Hal may have finally outlawed smoking on balconies but I'd bet many of those cabins still smell of cigarette smoke that "accidentally" got into the cabin. Congratulations on your choice of Princess. I think you will be happy with your decision. (And the new tech really is interesting isn't it!!!)
