We would like to enjoy the adults only area but the cushions on the chairs and hammocks are discolored and have been the same on our last 3 cruises. They need to remove the cushions then I will use the adult's area.

If it is about family, why have the children's area? These areas should be incorporated to other areas of the ship so families stay together. I think there should be a separate areas for adults can be with adults and children can be with children. We sometimes need our own spaces.

John Heald, Senior Cruise Director at Carnival Cruise Line, posted on his Facebook page that seven Carnival ships will now have a family friendly aft pool. This new policy is now in place and the seven cruise ships are:

Carnival Conquest

Carnival Glory

Carnival Valor

Carnival Liberty

Carnival Freedom

Carnival Splendor

Carnival Victory

But I wonder WHY they are making this policy change?

Carnival has made it abundantly clear that the Carnival arm of their corporation is all about families and family activities....and that children are welcomed and embraced. All of the latest ships (this decade) are about kids with the slides, rope course, camp Carnival, more "fast food" dining options.

Patrons who choose Carnival are well aware of this business scenario. Subsequently the elimination of adult pools seems to be the logical step in their progression. Also, pricing on Carnival (the lowest of all their lines) is attractive to families and presents them with a great opportunity for a family vacation.

People tend to forget that Carnival isn't a single line cruise choose. Holland America, Princess, Seabourn all offer more adult oriented cruises (Holland America is notable for catering to the over 50 sailor).

I think the grief of this for many is that the "cheap" or "affordable" cruise is no longer the "adult" experience it was in the past. Since there are other offerings that cater to "adult" within the scope of Carnival Corporation I think people are beating a dead horse on this one. It is up to the consumer to choose between lines, to choose what best reflects their life styles.

Hi Dutch - As a father of a teenager and a infant, I am one of the first person to always defend anything that has to do with kids. However, on this one I have to agree with the majority that the better idea is to have the adult only pool. Though Carnival is a family cruiseline, I am sure the children are not the ones paying for the cruises so at least the ones paying should get some of the main focus. I believe the best thing is to have an adult-only pool and one for kids only, and if space permits they can have one for all. There are some things that they have to leave and cannot include kids in all. Should they change the adult shows to have all family friendly shows, including adult comedy shows? Should they include an are in the casino for kids? They can still be family friendly and still have something that is adults only.

I voted "Don't care either way". My kids are now 20 and 23 but we sailed Freedom (2x) and Glory with them when they were kids and we sailed Splendor without them. To be honest my kids (as well as DH and myself) are not pool people. We did not use any of the pools on Freedom, Glory, or Splendor. We do on occasion use the hot tubs but normally only when we are in port and most of the people are off the ship. DH and I do like hanging out in the Serenity areas and those have not changed from adult only. This change really has no impact on us.

My son is 28 and disabled and I tell him all the time that mommy can't stand herself 24 hours a day and that is why she goes to sleep at night. He attends an adult day care 3 days a week to have the chance to be away from me and have fun with others. I feel that is the same for the adult only pool. Away from kids and interacting with other adults without the constant screaming and interrupting. Just because we love our kids does not mean we have to have our noses up their butts all day long nor vice versa. And just because you love your kid does not mean I have to love, like or tolerate your child. There are enough things on the ship to keep your kiddo occupied without having to overtake an area for adults. With the pools overrun with kids now, more adults will flock to the Serenity leaving no seating what so ever. Less then 2 weeks away from a Carnival cruise and if it affects me then I won't be back.

But I wonder WHY they are making this policy change?

Because Carnival really screwed up on the design of their ships and did not make their pools big enough. I've only been on the Dream and the tiny little puddle they call a pool is RIDICULOUS. It had to be a complete moron that thought that was big enough. So now they're realizing they need more pool space and rather than retrofitting the ships with adequate pools they're just taking ours away from us, plain and simple....

So does this mean that there are no adult only outside areas by the pool for adults. I have two kids that are now 18 and 23 and even when they were younger I would still prefer an adult only area.

If you're talking adult area by a pool, the only choices on Carnival at this point are the Serenity areas on Sunshine and Pride, which each have a pool as well as the Havana area on the Vista and the under construction Horizon. The Havana area is for those aged 12+ that are staying in one of 64 cabins until 700 pm only, then it's open for all, while those whose cabin is in the Havana area are at dinner or happy hour.

I'm seeing some of the posts to John Heald from his followers this morning, thanking him and Carnival for changing the aft adult only pools to "family friendly". A few of the common comments that I saw from these posts were that their children were not able to use the main pool because it was 1) filled with adults standing in it with adult beverages so there's no room for their children to swim 2) they didn't want their children exposed to the "adult themed" activities at the main pool (hairy chest contest, mixology contest???).

Simple fix to that: Let the children have the aft pool and make the main pool "adult only". Win win for everyone.

I'm sure the people thanking him are in large part plants to try and even the playing field (my opinion). They have been lambasted with complaint after complaint since the announcement has been made. So of course they will have people from "the other side" chime in so they can claim (as so may other times before) that this is what their customers wanted all along. They don't have the nerve to put an actual poll up because they already know what the results will be. It's easier this way to highlight the handful of posts where people are happy vs seeing in black and white what their guests' true thoughts are. Anyone see/sign the Change.org petition?! I think it's Great [emoji23] (those of you that have will get it)!

But what are they going to do - send the kids to the aft pool when these contests take place? I don't think so. Just because the little cherubs have access to both pools won't make Lido any tamer. In fact, I believe the opposite will happen. So now there will be 2 pools to be mixed with adults and kids. Someone is really brain dead on this issue.

Someone who does Facebook should take a screen shot of this poll and post it on JH's page.

Not necessary. They have already seen it. Guaranteed. In fact it's better if no one does. All the CC haters will be out in full force once again. It really bothers me when people go over there and "tattle". It's no wonder CC is loathed by Carnival and JH. If I got constant complaints from people saying "Over on Cruise Critic they think Carnival sucks because xyz" I would too.

I'm curious what ship on any cruise line has a pool that isn't tiny and essentially useless. The one's I've seen on Disney and Royal are ridiculously small (and ice cold as well).

What's it going to be, cruise lines? You can't be everything to everyone; you don't have enough deck space.

Families fill ships but adults buy the booze and blow money in the casino. If you don't have an intellectual property that allows you to charge ridiculous prices for a 'character meal', you're kind of boned.

(As an aside ... I read some data in one of the highly-regarded Disney World guide books (probably Unofficial Guide) that when asked to rate their favorite part of a vacation, a majority of kids say 'the pool at the hotel'. So given that kids really really like swimming and cruise ship pools are notoriously tiny because they are not profit centers ... maybe better off taking the kids to Volcano Bay at Universal Studios or something?)

Just came off the Oasis 3 weeks ago. Pool is no bigger than any on Carnival. Granted, there are three of them next to each other (though only 1 open past 5pm) but for size, they are no large.

As a mother of a 6 year old I totally think they should keep the "adults only" pool area...there are plenty of places for the kids to go otherwise....that being said, I do find that even if my child is at kids club and I "could" be using the adult only pool...I never do....I like to be near the band and the activities so I always find the main pool more fun but I do think the adults should have a place to go without being around kids

Totally agree...last summer we did Maui....condo right on the beach...many amazing activities etc and when we returned home and you asked my kid what his favorite part of the vacation was he'd tell you the "pool" lol kids for ya.....but even our cruise last month....of all the fun things we did, places we saw, he loved kids club etc...when you ask my kid what was his favorite thing.....he's say "room service" and to him that was only cookies and milk so go figure lol
