Anthem and Noro - sailing today?

Recommended Posts

Only 98 reported cases while onboard? Granted there were people who didn't report their illness, but that's a far cry from the rumor of 6-8% that I heard ( I'm well aware it was only a rumor).

They have to report to CDC if it is above 3%. Now, I don't know how long the lag is but it isn't on the CDC website.

I will never forget this cruise :)

Speaking of slobs - I saw a woman in Cocoa Cay dig watermelon out of the carvings with her long fingernails, eat it, and go back for me.

You know I don't get these people going after compensation. The cruise line didn't make them sick. A sick passenger did. As well as any who didn't report it to medical staff or quarantine themselves right away.

From all the complaints on here about everything being shut down and all the cleaning. People complaining they couldn't get a mojito. Sure sounds like the cruise line was doing everything they could.

It's really like the cruise line can't win. People want to be compensated if things are closed and they can't get mint in their drink. And people want to be compensated if they get sick.

I get it. It sucks if you get infected. But don't expect the cruise line to pay you for that.

...and this family might have been ones who brought infection on with them. Either way symptoms don't show up right away while they were contagious, so they exposed other passengers too. Should they sue this family? People get sick, it happens.

It was like over 600 people sick..i was on the boat

That was the rumor but that doesn't mean it was even close to accurate. Where did that rumor come from?

I doubt there were 500+ cases that were not reported, but we'll

know for sure if something

shows up on the CDC site.

I asked numerous crew and none would provide a number. So far RCI has stated 98.

Im just saying what i heard while on board ( i was talking to someone and a crew member told them 500+ )and my room stewardess told me it was on every deck ..and alot of people dont report it cause they dont want to be stuck in their cabin..and thats why its not on cdc cause royal prob doesn't want it on there if it doesnt reach certain amount they dont have to report it so of course they said a num below 100...iv been on cruise when passengers had noro it wasnt reported either and the ship wasnt on lock down like this one ..they closed all entrances to the stores except 1 and had someone standing outside w a bottle of purell...they closed middle stair case in casino and had to be disinfected b4 entering at the other entrances..couldnt get own soda from the machine ....couldnt get fruit in drinks...they were in hazmat suit spraying the hallways and you could bearly breath it was so strong ....you couldn't even feel comfortable on board you didnt even wana go to public places the ship looked empty ..

Im not surprised that noro was present on anthem. It seems ive read many reports here that anthem is understaffed and not that clean. Dirty dishes and glasses everywhere

Most important thing is dont touch ur face anywhere with your hands

Been on the Anthem four times, the last being 10/28-11/4 sailing. The Anthem is always being cleaned, dirty dishes and cups are picked up quickly. Most of the times we were still sitting at the table when our dirty dish and cups were being removed.

The only place I saw dirty stuff was outside of someones stateroom in the wee hours of the morning. Some guest are just slobs. If I bring anything back to my stateroom to eat or drink I would never think about leaving it on the floor in the hallway. I leave on the desk in my stateroom for my cabin steward to remove it in the morning.

The flu and noro virus/norwalk are completely completely different viruses with (almost) completely different symptoms.

I am aware they are different. I said I think of it like that. everyone says OOOOHHHHHHH NORO but you can get it other places than ships.. So I just feel like. If I assume the people around me are sick and behave in such a way, it makes more sense.

and actually, are they different? Noro causes Vomiting and diaharea, so does the flu (thats what most people remember)

During the 10/28 sailing when I went to the doctor I had to fill out CDC forms and even passed by a conference call going on with the CDC. So I would think that the forms that passengers filled out were passed along to the CDC.

Also, I am sure there is a prescribed set of rules/steps that ships must follow once it is determined that Noro is present. If it is also true that Carnival warned its passengers against mingling with Anthem's while the ships were docked in Nassau, news of Noro on board wasn't a secret.

WJ's staff was quick to remove used plates and would even come around while you were eating to collect dishes. If you found an uncleaned table, it took only seconds before you would see someone in the area and signal to them that you wanted to use the table. Announcements were made to leave once you were done with your meal so others could enjoy the same.

The flu is an upper respiratory infection that causes coughing, aches and pain, fever, malaise. Noro is a gastrointestinal virus, and is one of many “stomach flus” which aren’t, in fact, flus at all.

Not going to get into an agrument with you. Clearly you are missing the entire point of my thread.

I said That I treat every cruise as if people around me are sick. ( also said I dont like the word NORO as it has a mystique around it that get people into a panic like it's ebola... it's not that complicated) I take those precautions whether or not

the ship has put out any notice because you better believe that someone on the ship of 4,000 people is sick and not telling anyone. .

Sorry I offended you. I was sharing how I view cruises.forgive me if you dont like the way I have expressed how I deal with cruises. .. sorry it is different than yours. have a nice day. I was at no point giving out any medical advice...I am not a doctor, am not denying that people get sick. I am sure at one point I will even get sick. I just take every precaution to try to prevent it.

I would also like to add that I have been on cruises immediately following a report of GI issues. i have seen the crew working tirelessly to try to keep the ship clean and sanitize it, I think(in MY experience) they do a very good job. Unfortunately it's impossibly to continuously police the manners of people on board that have no manners. (not washing their hands, eating their way through the buffet, etc) it's NOT the ships fault, It's the people on the ship.

I was on the Nov 4 to 11 sailing and these are just *my* thoughts.

It was pretty bad the last couple of days, enough that my bf and I basically stayed in our room, ordered room service, watched tv and napped. We didn't want to risk the public areas too much. Even if we wanted to, there wasn't much "enjoyment" there. Purell every 10 feet, stores closed, only letting in 5ppl at a time for the esplanade sales, bars not making certain drinks, any ipad or touchscreen disabled, and I could go on.

Having over 1100 kids on board didn't help the problem any I'm sure.

The ship has a duty to report to the CDC how many cases were reported during the voyage,a full 24 to 36 hours before it gets into a US port, which would be a full day to a day and a half before we came back to Bayonne. The last day and a bit was when it was at its worst, but they didn't have to report those cases. (and they do not have a legal obligation to release the numbers including the last day and a bit as far as I know)

There was also a lot of people that were sick and didn't report it.

The warning letter delivered to our room November 7th said to call a number and the medical staff would see you in your room if you had symptoms, but I overheard someone as we got off the boat that she called for her son the last night because he was sick but no one ever came.

There were also ALOT of people who were sick after getting off the cruise but those cases don't count either.

I don't even want to know how this would have ended if it were a 12 day cruise!

I'm not going after any compensation, and I know we won't ever know the full extent of it but if you were on that cruise you might feel a bit differently than saying "just wash your hands better".

Note the bold I added to your post above. I also heard 6-8%, 10%, 600 people, but they were all rumors. Rumors mean nothing.

The ship did not look empty, not even toward the end of the cruise. Yes, it sucks for the people who did get sick, during and afterwards. But let's at least try to be a bit objective here.

Actually, the report 24 hours prior to entering the US is the "routine" report. If the number of reported cases reaches 2%, then they have to report this immediately, no matter if it is the first day into a two week cruise, and when the number reaches 3% they have to make the additional report, and then report every 24 hours. The cruise line has no legal obligation to release the number of cases however many or few there were. The CDC only publishes the 3% report, but they get the routine report, the 2% report, and any daily reports that are required, they just don't publish these. Note that the reports on the CDC website are "outbreak updates" meaning they have received previous reports.

We were on the 11/4 cruise and while you could see a very enhanced effort to clean, limit certain things and access, this did not affect our cruise, we did everything as we normally would have done, no one in our group of 7 got sick on or after the cruise.

Thank you. I thought I had understood the CDC website but looking again you are correct. There are 3 seperate reports.

In all honesty the fact we stayed in our room the last day didn't impact the enjoyment of our cruise. We decided to do this to minimize our chances but it was a nice recharge and relaxing day after a busy 6 days.

Where i was it was pretty empty..the casino on the last day was dead...the show on Thursday wasnt full the 630 one...if there was such little % then why dress up in hazmat suits and spray..and make everyone bathe in hand sanitizer at every entrance and exit..not let you get your own soda..and fruit and etc..ive been on ships that had low % of noro and they didnt that..so obviously there was alot more the 98 people cause half of them dont report it....

Don't know what the percentage was on our Princess cruise but we were told that the CDC ordered our ship back to port in Fort Lauderdale.

We were on a 7 day cruise that was cut to a 5 day cruise. We didn't rech 1 port of call. We had a 5 day cruise to nowhere.

Gee, I don't know, maybe as a preventative? I've probably worked more cruises than you've taken, and I've seen where we have taken to Virkon fogging even when below the 2% level, when we see a spike in daily reporting. And that was on a ship with half of Anthem's capacity, so under 2% is less than 20 people.

On Anthem now. Received a Noro letter again tonight with tomorrow’s compass.

Last night, Chic second seating had the majority of tables empty.

Everything is still being soaked with sanitizer.

All touch screen stuff is removed.

No fruit in drinks or muddling.

We’re part of a large group, and reports are starting to trickle in that members are sick.

The most frustrating thing I’m finding is that you can’t avoid touching the elevator buttons by using a covered finger or whatnot because they’re touch sensitive.

I’m meticulous about washing hands and touching surfaces in public spaces, but avoiding getting Noro when there are this many people crammed into one ship is pure luck.

It’s laughable RCL thinks people will go to medical when they know they’ll get quarantined.

Good luck to you and your group. This is when our cruise on the 4th started revving up in illness too.

The elevator buttons bothered me too .. I used to use my elbow but can't anymore

It is natural to be concerned about boarding a ship with norovirus outbreaks reported three sailings in row (reports just now starting to come in, including one from a very closed FB group - 17 people in their group quarantined.) There is no need to verbally attack those concerned and nervous, especially those of us with young children. Norovirus had been referred to as "the perfect pathogen" so naturally those of us with the facts want to know what is happening! People do not report because they do not want to be quarantined, if they do not report it is not counted - fact.

Thank you all for providing factual information and firsthand experiences. Spending $4000 for a week of worry is not exactly my idea of a fun time, so I am monitoring closely.
