I received the text about updating us by 4PM. Has anyone heard any updates?

Winter Storm Grayson - January 4, 2018 at 4:00 PM ET (8:00 PM UTC)

Due to winter storm Grayson, Norwegian Breakaway will have a delayed arrival into New York on Friday, January 5. As a result, Norwegian Breakaway’s 14-day cruise that was originally scheduled to depart on January 5 will now depart on Saturday, January 6 at 3 pm. Due to the ship’s late arrival on Friday and the ongoing weather situation, embarking guests are encouraged to arrive to the pier on Saturday morning; all guests must be onboard by 1 pm on January 6. Guests unable to adjust their travel plans are welcome to board on Friday evening, between 6 pm and 10 pm.

The ship will now sail a slightly adjusted itinerary, which will be communicated to guests onboard. All guests will receive a refund of one day of their cruise fare, in the form of an onboard credit. We sincerely thank our guests for their understanding of this unexpected change due to the weather and apologize to our guests for any disruption to their schedule. Any further updates will be posted on NCL.com.

I recall after Anthem sailed into the storm, people carrying on about 'serious damage' because a planter had fallen over.

Simply, a broken fixture is not damage.

Check your facts! I was on that sailing on the Anthem and there was a lot more damage than the planter that you saw. There was broken glass all over the upper decks, broken railings on the promenade deck, fiberglass from the satellites had been shredded and some satellite equipment fell causing damaged windows, and most importantly, the ship had an azipod issue due to the storm which caused it to slow to a crawl on its way back to Bayonne (the storm was less than 24 hours out of Bayonne and it took 3 days to return) and required tugboats to help push it alongside the pier.

First off, I don't believe the ship "required" tugs to push it alongside the pier. Because the ship notified the USCG that there was a problem with the redundant steering system (one pod being shut down), the USCG requires tugs to be used as escort for the entire transit of the harbor, whether needed or not. Since RCI was paying for the tugs anyway, they most likely felt they might as well use them. Cruise ships are generally loathe to have a tug alongside, as the tug's tire fenders tend to put black marks on the clean white hull.

The azipod was shut down to prevent further damage, not because it failed. And the reason why it took so long to return to port is the combination of only one pod working and the headwinds from the storm that had gone north of the ship in the meantime.

Broken glass, especially on higher decks away from the sea, railings, and satellite antennas are what we call "cosmetic" damage. They do not affect the stability, safety, or performance of the ship. The azipods were repaired (a wear part like your car's brake pads were renewed), and the ship sailed away after about a day's delay.

At least the next itinerary has an overnight at its first port (Aruba), so presumably that's all they have to forfeit and not miss any ports.

That wouldn’t be too bad. Feel bad for all those people . All the planning and waiting and Mother Nature has to ruin it.:(

Mother nature at her finest............

This winter has really roared in with a bang. At least here in the mid-west we don't have the snow but damn, it is colder than a brass toilet seat in Alaska.

IMO, this seems like a great call on the part of NCL. It gives those who's flights have been cancelled a chance to make other plans and even those already in New York a chance to board the ship early and enjoy a quiet evening ... what a great solution. WTG NCL.

Hope everyone has a great cruise, enjoy!

Agree a great call by NCL for the people that may not make the cruise because airports are closed and an original early embarkation. Those already in NY can enjoy a nice dinner and quiet night on the ship, and it gives the others some peace of mind knowing they don't have to rush out in the cold to make the cruise.

Cheers

Yes it has. I live in Buffalo NY. Our cruise is feb 10. As long as our flight leaves on the 9th as planned then I will finally relax!! We sail out of Port Canaveral. This has to be a nightmare for everyone. My worst fear traveling in the winter. Best of luck for all the breakaway cruisers.

The NCL site said Friday boarding if you can’t change plans but the text I got said to call them. That voicemail said can board Friday night from 8 pm to 10 pm. So is it 6pm or 8pm boarding??? Is security and personnel going to be there is this going to be a fiasco??? They need to get times straight

Exactly how I see it. Have a great cruise, Len. Safe travels to the pier!

We really believe that the change for one complete day is also due to the tides and the ship may not make it under the Verrazano Bridge. We figured that at first as to why they were leaving at 3PM instead of the usual times, and concluded probably due to the tides, especially with an almost full moon now.

anyway, just a thought.

I think it is awesome that the passengers on this cruise get more time to make their cruise due to the weather. That does not always happen. Losing one cruise day is far better than losing the entire cruise. Now all I need to do is pray there are no more storms till after our Jan 19th cruise. My brother is flying in from California to go with us. It will be his very first cruise. I'd hate for him to miss it due to a canceled flight or storm.

Planning and waiting is what we were used to. This origionally had 8 ports but irma came and wiped half our itineay out . This whole itineray is weather related

Still 13 days is better than 0!!

I'm ready

I can totally understand your frustration....which is why when we cruise we don't write anything in stone for ports. I have to believe that you are only going to miss ONE port but I don't know how they changed the ports you are going to. Maybe it will be a surprise and you can replan.......just don't let it spoil your good time. I would say that 75% of your vacation and good time will be ON the ship. Good luck and happy sailing!

I love puzzles but they best not sebd us to GSC no way can tenders call there

Aruba we were being kicked out by noon on JAN 10. So if we don' get there until Jan 10. No way now they can have us call there

Ohhh. Another mystery :)

Will suck to go to onky 4 when original was 8.

Especially since they made final payment before they altered the irma itinerary and bagged 4 ports on us this might be really sea day intensive

Wonder why the short call on Aruba? It was one of the substitute ports on the Jade in December and we had a full day there. Itinerary wasn't even one port like what we paid for or even one we would ever have booked but we did have a good time anyway.

Glad passengers are being given an extra day to get there....never have heard that before. The poster who brought up the tide thing is probably right.

I know my facts quite well, thank you and I am aware of these issues, so apology accepted. :)

The fallen planter was circulating around and included in reports about 'damage' to the ship. Either way, the hysteria still did not match the actual damage which was superficial in nature.

Azipod issues are not uncommon and the ease of the repair indicate merely excessive wear rather then 'damage'.

Just watched the local CBS News here in NYC..they had some pretty awful pictures of the BA during the storm. We hit one of those on the BA 2 years ago coming back to NY in an Aft Haven, a lot of broken glass and flooding. This looks to be worse but not horrible. Of course there is a family that had 9 rooms that are going to sue for their money back. I am sure the Captain wanted to sail into that mess...hope everyone has safe sailings from now on..

Some of that footage looked pretty wild. Water pouring down the stairs on the Deck 7 like that would have freaked me out. Exploding showers? Looking forward to the reviews on this one.

On the Breakaway now. It is indeed rocking and rolling and last night was a bit harrowing. Some staterooms had balcony doors that would not close or that blew out, including at least one Haven Suite. There is flooding on many floors including in La Cucina. Our balcony divider came off the ship wall and the railing and it banged all night against the window but fortunately did not break the window.

how does a balcony door not close?

and what do you mean blow out?

you mean the wind forced the balcony door off it's hinges/rails?

thus the room was subject to the storm all night?? :o

I hope everyone on the BA stays safe and that those leaving tomorrow make it to the ship safely and on time. I've cruised through a tropical storm which had very similar winds/seas and I'm pretty sure everything will be just fine. Good luck.

i was on the Gem a couple of years ago.

it got hit with 70' waves.

we sailed thru it.

no dmg to the ship that i know of.

i slept thru it but heard other passengers getting sea sick.

i saw videos of Breakaway during this storm.

Water leaking down the stairwells?!

How the heck did that happen??

i also read reports that the Breakaway was hit with 40' waves.

if the Gem made it thru vs 70' waves undamaged, im surprised that the Breakaway couldnt vs 40' waves. :o
