New Dress Code Designations?

Though your list is wonderful and obviously took time and effort, it only has the Cunard “what to wear / where” - not ‘what to wear’ .......

For example, where were you going to wear the tulle besides the spa?

What is “casual/relaxed” if not denim?

Please explain “smart attire and gala” ..........

These are all the questions new cruisers are asking (and old Cunarders) of Cunard otherwise the ships will be Australianised with, shorts, singlets and thongs before you can say “Cooee”

Ok, so I’ve decided the only way to solve this is to wear my dinner suit to breakfast, lunch and dinner. That way, I can’t get into any bother with Cunard fashion police. Might even wear a dress bow tie for the pool 🤣[emoji23]🤣

Hi Hattie - perhaps that's the solution to the current and dramatic 'Dress Code(gate)' - get Cunard to turn down the air conditioning temperature EVEN LOWER in the evening - THEY EVERYONE WILL HAVE TO WEAR A JACKET AND NO SHORTS:evilsmile:!! Just a suggestion ;)

Having yet to sail on Cunard (on Q.V. at the end of August) from reading the above do I understand the ship is cool inside in the evening? I do feel the cold moe than most.

Hi Margana, we have to agree to disagree.

  • NB.: During our stays in Queens Grill staterooms Cunard include a fully stocked in suite drinks bar; with your choice of spirits + champagne/wine - and is refilled as necessary during the voyage. Also as you say the often very generous OBC is a benefit too.

Glad you liked your last cheap Adults Only 4 star 'All Inclusive' package holiday in Spain but with respect I think I am not tempted but will stick, for now, with Cunard in The Grills.

Hi David

Have a quote from your post 278..............

Originally posted by insanemagnet The problem with that is that the standard (non-Grills) is not 'luxury' travel.

It is certainly not unpleasant, but it definitely doesn't deliver an equivalent service to a real luxury hotel. I disagree with your statement

- show me a 4 or 5 star luxury hotel that charges a similar average daily room/cabin rate Cunard charge

- AND includes all unlimited meals and & alcoholic drinks, complimentary room service, full entertainment, guest social gatherings, enrichment programmes, complimentary sports facilities, complimentary laundries = THEY DONT EXHIST AT ANY £

I think you'll agree that you and I originally replied to a "non-grills comment. It's both inaccurate and disingenuous of you to therefore describe what is provided in Grills with what the original post referred to (ie non-Grills). Free alcoholic drinks are not part of non-Grills fares. I do trust that you would not take alcohol from your suite to enjoy on other areas of the ship. That would be so "non de rigueur". I'm pleased that you enjoy Queens Grill. We could so travel, but occasionally prefer, as you say rather superiourly in italics " cheap Adults Only 4 star 'All Inclusive' package holiday in Spain .

May one thank Windsurftoy for illuminating the dress code of their choice. Having given it some thought, we have no wish to be associated with this new Cunard venture to take our Club down to the new steerage class.

Therefore, tomorrow we will speak with our PCS to re-arrange our next seven cruises down to five, cancelling two and booking Grills.

The new total cost is shighly higher, but worth it, to be away from all this unpleasantness.

May one suggest other lovers of Cunard do the same, as complaining will not change the inevitable for those booking Britannia or Club. Let the new class of Cunard cruiser have steerage.

There was a similar thread to this before we took our first Cunard cruise on Q.V. and I dutifully took note and took a good selection of dressy evening wear. However it was evident that, despite the impression given on this board that everyone really dresses up, the reality was very different. On formal nights, or gala nights as they are now designated, the majority of the ladies, although nicely dressed were not wearing long dresses. It was not what I expected. It seems that although the overwhelming majority on here are in favour of formal nights and evening wear, they remain in a minority once on board. So to those of you anxious about forthcoming cruises, please rest assured that there will be a wide variation in what is worn onboard and you will not be out of place if you choose not to wear a long dress.

I hate saying this because I really don’t mind dressing up, but we’re talking about a cruise ship- not the University Club or Union League. I think we’ve all lost a bit of perspective here.

Flolegs, I do find the QM2 cold inside. For the next voyage I will be taking an evening jacket, and not just a shawl. I don't know whether the QV and QE are chilly, too, or maybe it is just us people who feel the cold more than usual.

CC members. I asked my travel agent to check what was happening at Cunard - she kindly did and received a very speedy response.

This is what Cunard has said:

- "I have just had a long conversation with Cunard and also checked various social media platforms on-line about the subject of dress code and have this information for you. Cunard has changed the title of the 2 main dress codes after speaking with over 13,000 guests who felt the current terminology was confusing. Informal Nights are now referred to as "Smart Attire" and Formal Nights "Gala". The actual dress code remains the same.

- The Casino and Golden Lion Pub have been added to the existing venues where Smart Attire as opposed to Gala Attire is now acceptable.

- In view of the fact that these are fairly minor changes they did not feel it was necessary to contact every passenger that has booked with them.

- On Cruise Critic I found that it has been rumoured that guests sailing on Queen Victoria on Med itineraries this summer could, on their first night, dine in jeans (due to the late arrival of some guests who had travelled long distances and may not have time to get changed for dinner) . Cunard have no official policy about this so it is not their change of regulation but did say that if someone turned up in jeans they wouldn't refuse them entry to any of their restaurants"

But this reply still doesn't address the situation in the Yacht Club and G-32.

Cunard's website says:

Of course, if you prefer to spend your evenings in more relaxed attire, a selection of casual dining and entertainment venues is always available for your enjoyment. Feel free to dress casually as you visit any of the following venues: Kings Court, Lido Buffet, Golden Lion, Casino, Carinthia Lounge, Winter Garden, Garden Lounge, Yacht Club, and G32. Non-ripped jeans are appropriate.....

This seems all wrong to me. I don't think jeans are appropriate in those two venues.

It looks like the what to wear FAQ on the US Cunard Website has not caught up with the descriptions in Voyage Personalizer.

I'm not very hopeful that's likely to happen any time soon. The US FAQ doesn't seem to get much attention. It doesn't mention that the G32 and the Yacht Club are casual venues. That change was made on the UK FAQ over a year ago. Nor does it mention the Carinthia Lounge as a casual venue. That's a venue name change on QM2 (renamed from the Winter Garden) that occurred during QM2's remastering in 2016.

Hello, we are booked on two QM2 transatlantic cruises July 6 eastbound and August 19 back. We are also taking a two week river cruise and two week a Celebrity British Isles cruise in between beside 10 days on land. So, what attire is required on the Queen very important since we need different attire on each kind of ship! I had planned to bring tux and gowns for the QM2 in one suitcase and storing it in Southampton until we return 6 weeks later.

No matter what, still will have suit and sport coat for husband and "dress up" (wedding guest type of attire) along with a few silk flowing pants for the REFLECTION. This is what we wear on even Caribbean cruises. Everyone is very complementary and seem to appreciate our lack of jeans.

So my question is, is the above dressy enough for QM2 if the designations are ambiguous but they still mean formal and informal (to save the trouble and expense of lugging a third large suitcase)? It's been awhile since we sailed the QM2. We will not be in the Princess or Queen's Grill.

BTW, I'm sure not all the British understand American sense of humor at all times as well.

We’ll be on the same crossings as you. A suit and tie for “gala” or formal nights will be fine for your husband, and your “dress up” outfits will serve equally well.

We’ll be traveling in the UK and on the continent between sailings. We look forward to our one opportunity in the year to indulge in formal wear, so we’ll have a suitcase for tux and gowns that we’ll store in Southampton.

I don’t expect to see a significant lowering of standards over the summer, especially on QM2. If—and it is a very big if—Cunard are true their word and actually remind staff to enforce the dress code, such as it is, we may all be able to breathe a collective sigh of relief.

I have become disgusted with the US website. Especially since I think they have blocked the UK website for US users. If there is a workaround I wish someone would tell me.

Yes, they have blocked access to the UK FAQ site from the US (and Canada). For more information, see this thread I started last December.

All access to ask.cunard.com now blocked from U.S.

A work-around is to install a vpn to make it look like you are accessing that site from the UK.

As a newbie to cruising and to Cunard I am losing the plot regarding what to wear, where to wear it and when to wear it. Read similar for what not to wear.

I've put together the attached doc which I will attach to the door of our stateroom to guide us through the minefield. It may be wrong but I don't care. I now have a list and I can do lists - they provide me with order where there isn't any.

Another newbie here. Part of the allure (at least in my mind) of Cunard, and traveling on an ocean liner is the dress code (or maybe I just saw the movie Titanic too many times).

Although my "crossing" is still 4 months away, I'm already planning my wardrobe. In the evenings, I'll be wearing an evening gown on "Formal" or "Gala" nights; I'll be wearing cocktail dresses every other evening.

During the day, I'll be wearing tailored pants or skirts, with "nice" tops.

If I use the pool, I have a nice caftan-style coverup, and sandals, so I won't be traipsing through the ship in a swimsuit.

I'll be leaving my jeans at home. I plan to dress elegantly, because I think that's what a Queen deserves.

Although we’ve done quite a few cruises, we’ve never done a TA, and I always said that if we ever did I would only do it with Cunard as the QM2 is an Ocean Liner not a cruise ship.

Part of the appeal is the tradition and the dress code which we are looking forward to given the increasing informality of other premium lines we cruise with and will consider for future cruises.

For us, this will be a one-off as I don’t think Cunard would be our preferred choice for more regular itineraries, but who knows!

This forum has been very interesting for a number of reasons and also very amusing given the tone of some of the comments.

Don’t stress too much about what to wear or when. It’s really quite simple whether you’re a cruising newbie, or a Cunard newbie like us.

Whether it’s a TA or a more regular cruise, It’s a holiday and a great experience. Just enjoy [emoji41]

And it’s the increase in number of areas where the dress code isn’t required that is bothering me! Would it be possible for Ashley to ask her contacts about that please? Many thanks.

Could you also ask regarding this?

During the day, feel free to relax and dress as you please in all areas of the ship.

It would appear swimwear without covering is now allowed everywhere.

If this is the case, the dress code HAS fundamentally changed, not just the wording. We have then been lied to, trust and respect is broken, and every cruise booked then goes.

Have emailed them about this and will let you know what they say.

I thought you might be amused by this question I found on a different thread:

"

Can my husband wear sweat pants in the MDR the first night and every night for that matter on Empress of the Seas? Sailing April 14-18 to Nassau and Key West. "

The answer was in essence "not a problem, dress as you wish"

OR this

Can women get away with wearing Jean capris with a cute top and cute wedge sandals?

from this thread - https://boards.cruisecritic.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2616131

Admittedly I find Capri pants one of the worst"fashion" statements but Jean Capri pants!!!!!

Just because someone books a non-grills stateroom doesn’t mean they have no class. We have our first QV voyage planned for next year and reading these comments makes us wonder if we made the right choice!

We have cruised and travelled the world and while not in private jets or owner suites, we have manners and dress appropriately for the venue.

Hopefully our fellow voyagers will be more welcoming

I think it’s a sad state of affairs that you, on your firstplanned Cunard cruise should have been given the impression that only Grills passengershave Class, dress appropriately andbehave acceptably. Grills passengers pay premium rates for their accommodationetc. and for separate dining and lounge areas. Other than that, they enjoy thesame shipboard facilities and entertainment as you will. It’s not an indicator of Class, it’s simply that they choose that specific accommodation andare prepared to pay the required farefor it. The arrant nonsense that some Grills passengers perpetrate shouldreally be ignored.

We have always found our fellow travellers welcoming, greatcompany and friends who we remain in touch with.
