I thought Dogs weren't allowed?

To those that are not bothered.....go back to the "final Straw" the made Royal finally take the action:  The lady whose dog took a poop at the guest services desk and walked away.  If you are not bothered, watch where you step!

First... you do not know that this particular situation is why they changed their policy, you are merely speculating. Second... no, the dogs do not "bother me." Sorry, not sorry. I do however think they are best left at home for their comfort. FYI - I step in all kinds of things on the ship, because they insist on letting snot nosed, bratty, dirty kids on board. Do you think their parents clean up after them.... not on Harmony at least. THREE time I stepped in somethings in the elevator...UGH!  I'm glad I brought cavi wipes.

Do  you realize that RCCL is a  Mass Market FAMILY line that allows kids on board?  Yes, we see children all times of the year now.  For younger children, the school schedule doesn't  matter because they  are  too young to be in school, or their early grade allows them to miss a few days. And, the new ships with lots of kids activities, attract families.

hope you enjoy

REALLY? A mass market family line... I would have never known that. It's my first time on RCI. 🙄 I don't think you read my post for understanding... but rather just to respond huh?

You said all that like I didn't say... SNOT NOSED and DIRTY. Just because they are allowed on board, doesn't mean that people have to be disgusting slobs. Kids are bacteria breeding machines, and parents should correct bad behavior.

You know for a fact that this was the "final straw"?  How?

Agreed, there is so much erroneous information.

1) There is no certification for service dogs in the U.S.

2) There is no requirement for service dogs to wear a coat/vest. Handlers typically do it, and put big DO NOT PET signs on them, to discourage people from interacting with the dog while it's working.

I raise and train puppies for the largest provider of service dogs to veterans in the U.S. An important part of our mission is public education, and we're lobbying for an official certification or registry of service dogs. Because bringing a fake SD out in public, and failing to follow SD handler etiquette, creates ill will in the general public toward SD.

Regarding the OP photo, no legit service dog would be in a chair. Or being fed from one's own plate. Ever. Four on the floor at all times.

If Viking Cruise Lines no longer allow children on their ships, why can't the rest of the cruise lines no longer permit animals on board?

Because the ADA. Prohibiting all animals would be akin to prohibiting wheelchairs. Unfortunately if unscrupulous people lie so they can bring Fluffy onboard, the cruise lines cannot stop it.

The issue really is that some people need emotional support dogs. There is real scientific evidence that it can help people like our vets with PTSD. Also one of my clients has a white fluffball that loves her sweaters and alerts her to seizures. Another I know always has her nails painted and alerts to glucose changes. You don't get to dismiss a dog as a service animal because it's small or fluffy or white or wears clothes. The point is all those that are super huffy about this have no real recourse. There is no certification. Also the law in NJ does not allow anyone to ask anything other than if it is a service dog and what it is trained for, not sure about other states.

To those crying about allergies well, you are the one with the medical issue. Bring allergy medication or don't  fly/sail.  If you are afraid of dogs as an adult then here is your chance to get out of a phobia and embarrassing issue. If you just plain don't like dogs - well to be honest I don't trust those that don't like dogs lol.

So the vet with PTSD should take precedence over the passenger who might prefer not being attacked on a plane?

Not sure what your point is, since (a) that's an airline and we're talking about cruise ships, and (b) that was an emotional support animal, which RCCL now bans.

luckyprincess is correct that studies have shown veterans with PTSD are often able to reduce/eliminate medication and rejoin society with highly trained dogs by their sides. But if a veteran is medically disabled due to PTSD they would have a service dog, not an ESA, and therefore be protected by the ADA.

There’s debate over what classification that dog had, but not that it chewed the face off the guy one seat over. So I’m guessing it was not a properly trained service dog.

True, I do love to play poker with my dog. He never wins though. That tail of his, don't you know. As soon as he sees a good hand, there it goes 100 MPH. And he never understand why we all fold every time he has a big hand.

CLEARLY it was not a properly trained service dog! More often than not, vets with PTSD have actual service dogs. These dogs are trained to intervene, take some action when/if their owner begins to go into a panicked or agitated state. This guy did not claim the dog was a service dog. He said it was "issued to him for support."  Two different things. And this is one perfect example of why cruise lines and airlines are banning emotional support animals.

I only saw the greyish larger dog and the toy schnauzer.

I was more aggravated by all the horribly behaved kids!! UGH too many for January!! 🙄

Yes, I agree several of the kids were out of control on this cruise.  A lot of the parents just let them run wild.

We really enjoyed the Harmony.  Ship is in excellent shape and the dining room food and service was very good.

We we always do  RCCL cruise then head over for our second week on Princess (on the Regal now).  They are two very different experiences and we usually enjoy them both. However, we may take a short break from RCCL next year and let this slight negative memory fade before we come back.

I’ll say again, overall it was a great cruise on a great ship.

Why do most Vegas casino chains, now encourage you to bring your dog?  Why did Lowes revolutionize their industry, with their Pet's First Program?  I have seen many dogs in casinos recently, as well as many new places as before.  When i was a boy, in the 80's, you never saw children on cruise ships.  Now that policy, would be something useful to bring back!

I love this thread.

Some of you are so dramatic it's hilarious! You make it sound like there's 50 savage dogs running around every cruise!

Personally, I've worked on ships for years and I don't think I've ever seen more than 2 dogs on-board a contract (6 months)...

I saw a picture of dogs playing poker.  Maybe looking back it was from a casino.  🙂

No need to bring anything back.  There are cruise lines  that do not cater to families.  If I hated kids, I certainly would not sail on an RCCL ship!

LOL based on your avatar you are a nurse and yet here you are complaining about kids being bacteria machines.  I've got news for you ALL humans are but you as a nurse should already know this.

Now if you want to start a thread on poor parenting and how kids aren't respectful I'm right there with you and I have two young kids!  But stay on topic here please.

Just to add to this story for those that didn't bother reading it.  The dog in question was a 50 lb chocolate lab pointer mix and was sitting on the guy's lap in a middle seat?  What the heck?  One human can barely sit in a middle seat and this guy had a dog that big on his lap?  I'm sorry but if I was sitting in this guy's row there's no way I'm not complaining about this dog.  According to the story guy with the dog was already sitting there when the victim walked up.  I would have walked right up to the flight attendants and said this dog is way too big to be sitting there I want my seat moved.  Emotional Support stuff aside how is that even safe for a flight in such a cramped space?  At minimum the guy should have been forced to buy an extra seat to put this dog in but it's laughable that it was even allowed.  I feel sorry for guys suffering from PTSD but if you require everyone around you to bend to your needs with this situation then maybe you shouldn't be flying.

There are pictures of what this dog did to this poor guy here.  This guy is going to get a large law suit settlement but had to deal with being attacked because of an improperly trained animal masquerading as a service animal.

Yep.. I am a nurse. Started in Infectious disease/nosocomial infections, in the hospital, then Oncology, now hospice.

My comment was not meant to sound that I was shocked that kids are bacteria breeding machines, and instead just a statement. While all humans are, most adults do not put their hand in their pants, and then on their face, and then try touching things on counters they can't reach. (Servings spoons in the Windjammer.. yes watched this happen.)  Most adults do not put everything they can in their mouth... I did say most, and proceed to touch everything in sight. One comment from a parent to the staff member at the entrance to the Windjammer... "He does not need to wash his hands, he is only 4," I turned and said.. "Since he is 4, he especially needs to wash his hands." No comment, just a look of pure stupidity on her face. Nurse or not, I am not a fan of kids. I deal with them medically, and happy to help them and their families out, but  I never wanted any, never had any... thank goodness.
