Sweden has the 7th highest death rate in Europe, far higher than the other Scandinavian countries (Norway, for example, is 35th in Europe), so at present it doesn't appear to be an unqualified success. Having said that, it's perfectly possible that this may even out with time.

 

I'm no defender of this government, but they were heavily criticised earlier in the year for not learning the lessons of Italy and Spain. This time, one assumes they have decided that this spike may well follow the pattern of the current spikes in Europe and spread to the more vulnerable.

As you no doubt know, infection rates have been highest amongst young people, who are at less risk of being seriously ill, hence limited hospitalisation and death.

 

However, as you also know, winter is coming, and people spend more time indoors and they are worried that the younger people will affect the older people leading to the older people being seriously ill, being admitted to hospital and subsequently dying. As a society, surely we have to try and prevent wholesale death,  like there was 5 short months ago

The issue is that over the last few months our understanding of the disease has dramatically improved. The use of certain drugs, the less need to intubate, etc gives a far better prognosis than even 4 months ago.

Thus, even with an increased infection rate, there is no chance that death rates will reach the levels seen earlier this year.

Rather than try and proscibe the activities of the entire population, with far reaching future social and health related consequences, surely we should allow society to return to normal, with those at risk taking appropriate precautions.

And sorry, there will not be wholesale deaths. Being blunt, the most vulnerable have already unfortunately succumbed. You cannot die twice.

There’s still lots of people out there who are at risk from being seriously ill from Covid 
 

Statistically, just being male puts a person at more risk than a woman of the same age.

 

I’m not really sure what you are suggesting - is it that everyone under a certain age and without certain medical conditions goes about their life as normal, but the rest would have to continually isolate, with no physical contact with younger family members, for the foreseeable future? That would also create a whole raft of social and health related forums.

 

Are members of this Forum, especially the over 60s men, (where the risk starts to increase) really up for that? 

 

your comment about death rates has the potential to age really badly, let’s hope it never happens

Hi everyone,  Managed to finally get through to P&O only to be told that someone would call us back today before end of business as there is a huge number of calls to be dealt with !!!!!!!!!!!!

I will wait a little while then call again and see if I can get to speak to someone more helpful.  I understand and sympathise with them, they must be inundated with callers but surely once you get through they could deal with that particular call!!!!  The joys.

I learned while waiting for our March refund it was a fob off saying they will ring you back.

As a member of that group, I am hundreds of times more likely to die of prostate cancer than CV19, especially as the cancer referral rate is running so badly at present.

If the daily figures for preventable cancer deaths were presented in the same way as CV19 deaths, there would be a public outcry. 

My point is that us old un's should decide if we want to socialise in groups of more than 6, and not let our civil liberties be further restricted even more than they currently are.

I haven't got many friends😢. I doubt I could get a party of 6 together. My DW has lots of friends, but they don't invite me when they go out. I might apply to be a covid warden. ( Even spell check don't like me. It wanted to change Covid, to vivid.😥

That happened to me when I wanted to extend our balance due date. I phoned  at 9.10am on August 3rd and was told they would call me back later that day. Still waiting!!

I'm getting really confused now, as you said earlier that those at risk should take appropriate precautions, now you are saying that the old folk should decide for themselves if they want to flout the instructions and meet up in large groups. What with large groups of pensioners meeting up and young people just carrying on with their normal life, Terrier John would be culling everyone!! 

 

You'll have to sort out between the two of you  what to do. In the meantime, I'll just do as I am asked, to protect myself and everyone else, especially those who are more vulnerable than me.

Some people aren't very good at assessing their own risk. Then if you decide you aren't at risk and don't take precautions, you risk getting culled by Cruise Critic's Covid Marshall lol

 

we didn't have many cases once before at the start of March, and look what happened - exponential growth.  It's still  the same virus and will behave in exactly the same way if we don't make an effort to stop it.

So 25% of local authorities have a higher rate, and South Yorkshire is one them. Only Hambleton has had no more cases. Every other authority has seen cases double, so here, we need to have these restrictions again before it gets out of control. We were warned!!!!

Let's take Dorset.  Infection rate of 8.7 per 100,000. 

 Someone explain why this "rule of 6" is being applied to an area where it is manifestly not required.
