is it possible to carry on a 12 pack of canned soda instead of checking it with the porters? I’m afraid if I check it, it will possibly get busted.

Putting soda cans in your luggage is a no-no. All soda must be carried on.

Security ripped open our 12 pack and tore the cardboard open so bad we couldn't carry it, had to jam it in a backpack.

they do check for hidden beer but you'd think they'd open from the end flaps.

They did that in Charleston SC before boarding, but had tape to fix the boxes.

As the others have said, you do need to carry it on yourself. Carnival's website lists specifics as to how much and what form of containers are permissable (currently a maximum of 12, 12oz cans per person):

Speaking of carrying on soda...can u carry on a chair in a bag?? Or perhaps check it with your luggage? (Would use it OV cabin)

Yes. But can only be used in your cabin, or for when you go ashore to a beach. Here's a link for items that are either allowed or not allowed: https://www.carnival.com/help

Scroll down to the blue heading  "What items am I not allowed to bring?"
