link99 Posted July 1, 2021 #1 Share Posted July 1, 2021 Looks like for now all size and types of cruise ships will be allowed into Key West. https://amp.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/florida-keys/article252479493.html
fla gang Posted July 1, 2021 #2 Share Posted July 1, 2021 I'm sure Key West will fight this. They don't want the big ships churning up the bottom, and bringing in thousands into Key West at once! The way everything has been changing who knows what will happen!
Rare ReneeFLL Posted July 1, 2021 #3 Share Posted July 1, 2021 Key West should charge the large cruise ships out the ying yang so they won’t want to come.

That's really funny considering their livelihoods are dependent on those very people.

Not to be obtuse, but Key West does pretty well without the ships. Yes, they are a tourist town, but there are enough land-based tourists to keep them busy.

They seem to be doing ok. There hasn't been a ship there in over a year. Hotels are booming if you can even get a reservation.

They were the ones that chose to ban the ships.

I don't think the "livelihood" of the Key West residents depend on cruise ships at all. The local residents and local small business owners don't want it. Even the local politicians (of BOTH parties) don't want it.

Not all cruise ships can make it in through the channel because of their size. Attempts to destroy the reef to widen the channel have been successfully stopped in the past. NightOne Posted July 1, 2021 #10 Share Posted July 1, 2021 Screw Key West Staying on the ship for any future Key West stops. They don't want my money then I'll just use it in the casino on the ship. 😉

The stop mostly consists of a bunch of bars and shops on Duval Street down to a marker that claims to be the Southern most point in the U.S. (which it is actually not) No loss for me
Rare sergel02 Posted July 2, 2021 #13 Share Posted July 2, 2021 Personally, given that many of the residents don’t want large ships there even, and the ecological damage, I’ll probably just avoid going on a cruise that stops there. It’s not very relaxing to go to a place you’re not welcome.

I bet many will be reluctant, simply to avoid bad headlines. Any bets on what Royal will do? This is the earliest I can find currently 5 Night Labadee Cruise Oct 24, 2021 . Now that the Local ordinance is preempted, I won't be a bit surprised if earlier trips get added. Earliest Carnival cruise I can find is Oct 11th
