Rare Mary229 Posted November 6, 2021 #51 Share Posted November 6, 2021 (edited) Here is the cynical and possibly realistic view: People like to eat, drink and gamble. Those are the big three vices you can charge money for😉. They have expanded eating as far as they can (maybe), they have expanded drinking (they call it a music walk but it is a cleverly disguised bar) and now they are expanding gambling. There was a discussion recently concerning the Microsoft area being converted, possibly to crafts. Maybe that is going to become a Painting with a Twist franchise (just kidding). I prefer some of these measures to hawking, decreasing hotel crew, degrading the food quality or decreasing cabin sizes to squeeze in just a few more passengers. The bottom line is the bottom line, they need to generate revenue. That is not in dispute, it has to happen somewhere. I'd prefer that they just raise the per diem rate per passenger to the point where none of the above are necessary. However I'm sure that view is not going to find favor with many.

I honestly don't know what to make of this! I was really hoping they would go back to Music in OB which is sorely needed on the other Class Ships. If this is the replacement to Music, very disappointing!

However before I posted I recalled the many threads that appeared this past spring when HAL starting adding cruises to the 2021 and 2022 line up and the incredible angst over 10 to 20% increases. I do believe HAL is adjusting its strategy but they are not yet wanting to jettison their fixed income demographic who are price conscious.

Exactly so. Who knows how this will all pan out in future. One thing I've learned from cruising so many years is that cruise lines' standings tend to vary over time. I'm not writing HAL off just yet, but I am troubled by some of the things I'm hearing and hope they are temporary.

They may be ready for play on tomorrows cruise. I guess that's why they sent the wonderful musicians who were playing there during the transatlantic home. Apparently, that wonderful jazz group was supposed to be the response to people who wanted ballroom dancing brought back.

Nor am I or will I be writing them off. But, like you, I hope that another change will occur. If I have learned anything in the recent years when sailing on HAL, the product and experience can be inconsistent with what I experienced previously. Placing slot machines or other forms of gambling in areas of the ship other than the Casino would make me consider HAL a step below the cruise product available on their parent Company, Carnival Cruise Lines. 5 hours ago, cruisemom42 said: I'd prefer that they just raise the per diem rate per passenger to the point where none of the above are necessary. My Volendam cruise is costing more than an equivalent Prinsendam cruise and she was the priciest ship in the fleet. I don’t mind to pay a higher per diem as long as we get the quality that should go with it 😉 2 hours ago, rkacruiser said: Well, I favor it! 1ANGELCAT Posted November 6, 2021 #63 Share Posted November 6, 2021 Wasn’t Signature of Excellence the old slogan? I thought Savor the Journey is the current one. You can savor your journey by staring at a slot machine screen instead of the ocean😱 2

So instead we have to put up with "upsell" items on the menu in the MDR, slot machines in the Ocean Bar, and the like. At some point it may get to be too much for even you.

We will gladly pay more for our scheduled cruises on Azamara and O, smaller ship, better food etc. The strategy for HAL appears to be charging more and delivering less. I would blame all this on the massive amount of debt CCL added recently but the strategy began before the pandemic.

Since you have to wait an hour before you get your wine at the table, they might as well bring in a couple of slots into the dining room and turn up the sound so all the passengers can enjoy the 'music'.. Upsells in the MDR - Tacky and definitely not a Signature of Excellence Slot machines in the Ocean Bar - Tacky and definitely not a Signature of Excellence BBC movies on the Main Stage on Gala Nights - Tacky and definitely not a Signature of Excellence No music in the Ocean Bar - Tacky and definitely not a Signature of Excellence I was never a big fan of anything introduced under the Orland Ashford regime and it seems that Gus Antorcha is continuing in the same vein. Most cruise lines seem to be upping their game to attract new passengers post-Covid but HAL seems to be stagnating.

Djptcp Posted November 7, 2021 #72 Share Posted November 7, 2021 I welcome more slot machines in the Ocean Bar on the Koningsdam and the Rotterdam. We were very disappointed at the tiny size of the casino on the Koningsdam in early 2020 and we were on board for their big $50,000 slot tournament so the casino was super busy the whole 10 days. We are sailing on the Rotterdam on Dec. 1st, again as part of the $50,000 slot tournament, so we know that tiny casino will be overwhelmed as well during the 11 days. We love HAL for many reasons, but to build new ships with very small casinos was a big mistake, IMHO.

Rare The-Inside-Cabin Posted November 7, 2021 Author #75 Share Posted November 7, 2021 I was told by reliable sources that the slots are being installed to support a special casino promotion and are not permanent. Should be removed in a "few months" hmmmmm tine will tell
