I spent the last 6 months in an intensive graduate school criminal justice program focused on research.  I don't lack reading comprehension.  Exactness matters when you are discussing causation.

I specifically stated correlation and that multiple factors are involved. No where did I say causation.

Do you not understand the difference between correlation and causation? Correlation means an association and relationship between variables, but does not imply causality.

Clearly, at least some lack of comprehension is at play.

behavior on airplanes is now so horrible and more frequent now  that the FBI is taking criminal refferals from the FAA. There should be one "No Sail List" based on incidents from all the cruise lines and could be enforced on cruises that embark from a US port,  like there is a "No fly list"

Every who boards a cruise from a US port must have a valid passport, offenders could be tracked that way.

I just spend 8 days in Las Vegas where I saw no fighting, loudest adults were two groups wearing LSU/USC gear yelling at TVs, but saw tons of feral kids running loose at all hotels from Circus/Circus to the Venetian.  It is why hotels there are going to over 21 only guests.

Having spent hours in my wayward youth riding the entry door at the most popular local hotel bar and hanging with Security into dawn, my observation is women are the worst for Security to manage.  Women will swear, spit and swing on Security believing there will be no physical reaction.  This is made worse when the Security forces are from more modest cultures and facing a larger combatant with no concern of modesty.  Rule Number 1 for any physical confrontation is you do not engage if you can't win.  Old timey Security would absolutely clock the drunk woman who punched or kicked them first.  It would take several ship security officers to physically restrain each of the combatants usually seen in the videos.  Add in the likelihood there will be physical contact with breasts/butts (claims of sexual assault), everything will be videoed by someone, and the relentless media coverages of constant violence with seemingly little law enforcement to quell it, I can see where people have no respect for ship security.

Just like Journeys cruises, Alaska cruises skew older. That's a big factor right there.

FTR I have been on over 25 Carnival cruises, including probably a dozen Caribbean cruises, and I have yet to see (or even hear about) an onboard fight.

Same with us.  We have been on 16 Carnival cruises and have never, ever witnessed any fights (and we used to go to the nightclub a lot back when we first started cruising).  All but one of those cruises have been to the Carribean.  The worst thing we have ever witnesses was two groups of people having brief words in the main auditorium before a show.  One person did throw ice on another person but that was the extend of that altercation.

On our cruises we usually just see folks having fun and enjoying themselves.  You see people of all walks of life, all races, ages, religions, and political affiliations just mingling, laughing, talking, drinking, and having fun.

This narrative of Carnival cruises being full of rowdy folks is just that.....a narrative that has been put out there and some people just run with it.

I'm about to hop on the Horizon on Sunday and I am sure it will be just as fun and drama-free as all of our previous 16 Carnival cruises.  I'll report back if not.

Just got off the Magic and wanted to provide some quick thoughts. This was a 6 day sailing out of Miami to Amber Cove, Grand Turk and Half Moon Cay this past week.

The great:

Service: Service onboard the ship was wonderful, as it usually almost always is. You can definitely tell that they are short staffed in certain areas, but they power through it. I felt terrible for the solo coffee shop worker at times who had a huge line of guests and suddenly Fun Squad members thought it would be a good time to go right up to the counter to order their drinks, then act visibly annoyed when it was taking a while. This is the type of behavior that makes the crew often feel the staff onboard feels like they are above them.

Alcamy Bar: All mixologists were wonderful at the Alcamy bar, but a huge shoutout to mixologist queen Zora from Serbia. Zora remembered me from a few of her previous ships and made me feel welcomed back, made me feel special and just treated everyone like she understood the hospitality mission. I was sailing with a friend who had not cruised in years and she left a really wonderful lasting impression on him.

Cruise Control Band: This band is great! They are so engaging with the audience, remember peoples names and are just overall really talented. I cruised with them on the Freedom for her post dry dock TA and a few cruises around NYE and every time they were so full of energy.

Cleanliness: Staff was always around cleaning and making sure everything was tidy and clean. This was the first time in a while I didn’t sign off the ship feeling a cold coming on and never once did I see a public restroom that needed attention.

Guest services: I bought the premium internet package and almost never had signal in my cabin and around the ship I was lucky if I recieved 1mb speeds. Guest services was great to quickly refund and apologized. No arguments needed! 🙂

The good:

Food has continued to be elevated compared to the time leading up to the new menus. Everything was cooked as ordered, served hot and service was quick in the main dining rooms. Blue Iguana was tasty as always, Guy’s Burger was decent, and the buffet is the usual miss for me. I was really impressed that 1am room service came within 25 minutes.

The awful:

Carnival feels like they have two brands within one based on the sailing. This cruise the kids and crowds were completely out of control. The worst I have ever experienced, including my five years working onboard ships. They completely took over areas, would block entire stairwells and not allow people to pass, screaming and yelling knocking on people’s cabin doors at 2, 3 and 4 am. Security had zero control of the situation and didn’t even bother enforcing curfew.

The other issue was we had multiple, and I mean multiple, fights happen onboard. The last night of the cruise a guest attacked another with a knife and they had to do a “Code Charlie” where even the staff said they have never seen the Staff Captain running so fast through the deck 5 promenade with security like that before. I left the Magic on Saturday and boarded the Horizon on Sunday and night 1 there was already a passenger with his face completely covered in dripping blood from being beat up.

I honestly don’t know what Carnival has to do to take control of these situations, but it is getting out of hand. At the Diamond gathering and debark area so many were saying they are just about done with Carnival. If it wasn’t for a few fantastic crew members I love cruising with, I would probably move on. No cheap deal is worth dealing with that. I almost feel like Carnival needs to rebrand their summer and booze cruise division to a different name lol.

Anyway, feel free to ask any questions and I’ll be happy to answer. I didn’t do much in port as it was a total beach cruise with stops in Grand Turk, Half Moon and Amber Cove.

Thanks!

Drink packages should be discontinued.

Carnival wants there customers to drink those $15 drinks.  Carnival makes more profit from drinking then cruise fair…. If people drink too much you get craziness .  Carnival tolerates craziness. Because the money drinking brings in.
‘The drink  package you need to drink 6 drinks to break even .

This is a bit like saying that flu season spikes because it's cold.  Flu season spikes because when it's cold, people spend more time in confined spaces.

Your airways are also much more dry during the winter, whether inside or outside, leading to an increase in viral and bacterial susceptibility.

How is this different than any other cruise line?

5 drinks to break even for $12 drinks...  (assuming $59.95 pp/ per day pre-purchase for cruises 6 days or longer)

Using your $15 drink example, 4 drinks to break even for $15 drinks...

Thow in some bottle water, morning coffee(s), and perhaps a Gatorade, even less cocktails to break even.

So, you paying for mine?  No?  OK, so let me get the package that I feel comfortable with, and somehow, miraculously (sarcasm) manage to avoid getting into fights.  As noted, rowdy people can get there with no or very little alcohol.  Most road ragers are sober, for example.

Much different from Holland America, Celebrity and Princess.

Still trying to figure out whether you think those lines don't sell alcohol, or drink packages in general?

I just got off of the Firenze 7 day Mexican Riviera last Saturday. I didn’t witness any drunk people or fights thank goodness.
There was a big presence of security hanging around the lido deck and around the Amari/Frizzante bars during the day and at night.

There were lots of very foul mouthed, screaming adults and kids everywhere, just classless, not well mannered people on this cruise.

I’m about 21 points away from being Diamond, Carnival was my very first cruise ever and does hold a special place.
I’m one for a cruise it what you make of it but the passengers can have an effect on it too, at least for me.
I decided I’m going to take a break from Carnival for a while, it just really got to me this cruise.

The foul language is really bad on the ships. I have mentioned this before in previous post. The F bomb is heard quite frequently from men and women on the ship.

Just like everywhere else in public, it is how we have evolved.  Agree it is not pretty, but it is what it is.

I play golf with some people that use foul language and they know I do not like it. They do make an effort to control their language when we are paired out of respect. Respect for others may be that missing ingredient as these individuals matured or did not mature in their language skills.

Cannot argue with any of that, I was just stating the facts of today's society.  It bleeds into other areas as well (none of which are good).

I only drop it sitting at the bar, in a bar and well mostly, in the casino..  there shouldn't be any kids around, right?

When is it ever appropriate language, kids or no kids?

They are just words. Clearly not everyone agrees with what is appropriate and not appropriate. If we all did this conversation wouldn't be taking place.

We have determined there is a kid problem at times and a parent problem at times along with an adult language problem at times. If we could solve one, we should try look to solve all. Talking about the problem is a step in the correct direction.

Carnival: 44.9

HAL: 64

Celebrity: 50.2

Princess: 54

So we have two scenarios. One of a older population that would greatly skew the consuming ratio, and two upscale lines which would do about the same thing.  That pretty much leaves the big 3 which pretty much handle it the same way.
