jabberjaw070596 Posted January 3, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 3, 2018 In another big move, Carnival is cutting the cord on showing the ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX networks on in-stateroom TVs. The TVs will still show channels like CNN, TBS, TNT, and the Discovery channel in addition to the ship channels like the lido deck camera and cruise tracking. However, the overall size of the TV guide will be significantly reduced

wo5m Posted January 3, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 3, 2018 I saw this too and was a little disappointed at first. Like most I don't watch a lot a TV on a cruise, but one of my funnest memories on my first cruise was watching the local news for a Denver station and how they were warning people to stay home and indoors because it was unusually cold( -15 if I remember correctly) while getting ready to go to the beach at Grand Cayman. . riffatsea Posted January 3, 2018 #8 Share Posted January 3, 2018 Well we DO watch tv as we often cruise during March Madness and watching basketball is part of our vacation routine. It is hard to believe that they won't show the games or that they'll only be on in the Sports Bar.

teknoge3k Posted January 3, 2018 #11 Share Posted January 3, 2018 That stinks. We sleep with a TV on and on our last cruise we woke up the next morning to a high speed chase in Miami. It was fun watching it on tv.

CarenBear Posted January 3, 2018 #14 Share Posted January 3, 2018 I get it, this is unfortunate for the folks that like to watch TV on their cruise. Doesn’t matter to me either way as long as there is Ice Cream. Gotta have my late night snack! Nic6318 Posted January 3, 2018 #15 Share Posted January 3, 2018 Hi Yes, people, some enjoy watching tv while on a cruise. If this impacts people in a negative way, they will make the same determination that everybody does on choosing a cruise. If this cruise line doesn't offer what the customer wants, they have the option of finding one that does. Not a biggie. As the OP said they just posted FYI. For that a thank you is warranted. For those that think a debate on the benefits of watching tv while cruising is needed, probably starting a new thread on the "ask a cruise question" page would draw more responses as the audience would be wider. Just a thought.
salty dingo Posted January 3, 2018 #16 Share Posted January 3, 2018 At home, we ONLY get the major networks, so trading them for channels we don't normally get is just fine with me. Honestly I would not notice if the room had no TV, but DW loves to curl up in bed and watch, while I go roam about the ship watching the sail aways, etc.

ladiibug Posted January 3, 2018 #18 Share Posted January 3, 2018 This is nothing more than another Carnival cutback. Anyone who believes that Carnival did not have the option of including local channels in their new providers package is delusional. I have the tv on as I get ready for dinner. If I’ve laid out in the sun and been day drinking (which is every day because I’m one of those that maximizes my Cheers purchase) I might want to go to my cabin and lay down and watch Judge Judy before dinner. I might want to lay on the bed and watch Big Brother before I hit the casino. I’m on vacation....I should have the ability to do so. ;p Please take a moment and Google cruise line revenues for 2017. As a shareholder, I’m extremely pleased; as a customer, I take umbrage at the continued cheapening of the brand.
loxley Posted January 4, 2018 #19 Share Posted January 4, 2018 What is weird is, I don't even have a TV at home, but do watch when on vacation. Oh well, there will be something to watch I suppose. Now that I think about it, what I watch is no big deal so I am fine with the change. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
cmichael1279 Posted January 4, 2018 #20 Share Posted January 4, 2018 Retransmission fees aren't cheap - Carnival was likely paying each local TV station a fee for each TV on each ship. That's just like Comcast/DirectTV/AT&T etc do for cable/satellite service on land. TV stations are losing viewers, so they're getting whatever the can from these fees
lcpagejr Posted January 4, 2018 #21 Share Posted January 4, 2018 for the TV addicts...You will have choices...maybe just not the local/affiliate channels. Have you ever noticed ESPN is not shown in your cabin but at the bars/sportsbars?? So obviously the ship has control over what they can subscribe to. And for those major sports fan.... When there is a major sporting event in any of the major professional or NCAA games (ie playoffs)...The ship usually will pickup the International feed. This happened to us on Princess Royal during NCAA semifinals. CBS feed was not available...but games were shown on ESPN feed which likely was International feed
Crusin Hogs Posted January 4, 2018 #22 Share Posted January 4, 2018 I expect next to see an upgraded tv package offered per cabin ,, want more tv ,,more $$$ for Carnival ,, after 12 cruises ,we are now looking at different vacation options ..maybe a travel trailer ..week or 2 in Key West
JMAE Posted January 4, 2018 #23 Share Posted January 4, 2018 This is not a make it or break it cut to us. We cruise to relax but we have always watched some TV while on the ship. What I wished they would do is increase the number free movie channels from the two they currently broadcast.

Love our travel trailer! And going to Key West this week, too. There is still no doubt that even with upcharges and what not, a Carnival vacation is much cheaper than almost anything land based. To be fair. But yeah, you should look at different options also. Cruising is great but spending a week in the Bahamas is awesome as well.
phoneman69 Posted January 4, 2018 #25 Share Posted January 4, 2018 Try being on the Fascination in September in the middle of 2 Hurricane's with out major TV coverage. CNN was full blown but the other major networks sure provided a lot more local coverage. Left San Juan and finally ended in Miami. Needed the Major TV network for coverage as Carnival could not keep us fully up to date not their fault just way to much info. We are sailing again but this cut back is scary.
