Carnival Hub App

Overall, it’s just OK. My issue is, it logs me off the chat too often. So, I check my app, it’s shows me off the chat, so I log back on and see that I missed a chat. Since it’s only $5, I get it. But I wish it were more dependable.

I used it. The chat worked really well. However, the Hub app as a whole has a problem if you DON'T switch to airplane mode before turning on WiFi. My phone is issued by my employer and I was allowed to receive SMS messages while on the ship. The Hub app wouldn't work while even though I was connected to the Carnival ship WiFi.

If you plan on getting a WiFi package, save the $5 per device and use an Internet-based messaging service instead that's compatible with the particular plan you're purchasing. Test it at home before you go by turning on airplane mode, then turn on WiFi. If you can send and receive messages at home, you should be able to do it on the ship assuming that app has access to the Internet on the ship.

BTW, you cannot be logged on to two different devices under the same account at the same time. If you log into the hub app on a tablet with the same account as your phone, you will be automatically logged out of the app on your phone.

We just got off our cruise and utilized it thus past week. We really liked it. There were times a text did not deliver on time, but for the week it worked well 95% of the time.

We utilized the app all the time checking the dining room menus for each night (even days ahead) and to see what events were occuring when. I felt bad because we never looked at the fun times delivered to our room because activities were on the app and I could "favorite" them to know what was coming up. The app would also give me notifications on my main phone screen letting me know when an event was about to start.

I have used it on my last couple of Carnival cruises to keep in touch with dd while she was in the cabin and I was in casino, show, etc. Worked well. My only issue is that we could never hear the sound of a message coming in, so I constantly had to check my phone's screen. I would not hesitate to get it on my next cruise.

Disconnect your on vacation.
Guess you have no idea what the chat function is for..... It's for chatting with your family/friends who are on the ship with you. Useful to just check in with others, find out where they may be, where they'll be later or if there's something that I should be aware of such as a chog leaving and an opportunity to get a seat by the pool.... Only thinking of using it to chat with the other folks we are going on the cruise with. We won’t be doing everything together and thought it would be a good way to keep each other informed and meet up when needed. I do not plan to pay for a Wi-Fi plan while cruising. I actually like unplugging from the rest of the world during that time!

Did you only use the hub app or did you purchase a Wi-Fi plan also?

I assume it's $5 per phone, not cabin? Still sounds like a good deal. I remember people bringing those sorry little walkie talkies on board. This should be much better.

yes it cost me 20 bucks today for the week. its five person. you can even connect with other people on the ship if they are using the chat feature.

I only used the Hub app. On Friday there was an issue with my daughter's phone (it got unintentionally wet) and started acting wonky. She thought her phone got hacked, it would let us unlock it, could only enter two numbers of her passcode, so I purchased 24 hours of wifi so I could research what was going on. But the three of us used the Hub app to communicate.

We've used the Hub app for chat when we traveled with 2 other couples. It seemed hit or miss as to when we got the messages. However, I think that may have been due to us or them closing the app. You don't get message notifications if the app is not open, according to what I've read on these boards. Still, for $5 for the week, it was worth it. It just made it easier to let others know where we were, since we were not always together 24/7. While I used to always lock my phone in the safe, I have started using it for the Hub app & photos. Also, on Magic, we accessed our photos via the app & chose which one we wanted to purchase. We just got a digital copy, then air dropped it to our travel companions. I do like using the Hub to mark favorite activities & get reminders when it is coming time for them. Plus, you can check your onboard account, menus, open/close times, etc. So, even if you don't want the chat feature, I recommend downloading the app for free use on board.

We've tried walkie talkies, but not my favorite method of communication on board. They do come in handy, though if the guys take a different excursion then us girls. Makes it easier to meet up when we each get back.

I used it once and it stunk. Messages would come in at 2 am that were sent at noon the day before. I got my money back. A cruise ship is small enough that it is easy to find people or plan a bit ahead for meet ups.

The Hub App is awesome and you don't need the ship's wifi like some suggested. We did get a wifi package and used IM, much more reliable than Carnivals chat

You do need to connect to ship's wifi, but you do not need to purchase a data package.

no you don't, you download the app from the App Store at home, get on the ship and activate, no purchase required

I'm assuming you are saying you don't need to connect to ship's wifi. There is no charge to access the ship wifi, but to log-in and use the Hub app features (after downloading the App before boarding the ship), the directions specifically state to "Turn Airplane Mode ON" and "Connect to Carnival Wi-Fi"

I think we are both stating that there is nothing to purchase. The confusion (and I see others doing this too) is equating wifi to internet.

Here are the options:

  • set up nothing and rely on the paper fun times and analog communications;)
  • download the free Hub app: cruise countdown before boarding, on-board information (but no chat) after connecting to the ship wifi (intranet, local to ship only)
  • download free Hub app and also purchase $5 per folio (for the duration of the cruise) chat feature: all Hub features plus option to send/receive chat messages with others passengers on your ship/sailing that also have the app and chat feature selected; does not give access to anything off the ship like texts, social media, email, etc
  • purchase an internet data package (various levels/pricing): this allows limited communication (package dependent) with those off the ship (facebook, messenger, e-mail [at higher levels]); this is separate from the chat feature, and if you want both on board and off-ship communications you would need to purchase both chat and a data package
