Wearing a robe from room to the pool

DH & I were at Holiday Inn Express in Texas not too long ago. As you are all aware, HEI's have a Breakfast Bar. We watched as group of 5 ( 2 adult males, 2 adult females, and one teen) paraded into the breakfast seating area - each one in their P.J's with only the two women in (cotton) robes. They proceded to get their breakfasts, pull up an extra chair to a table, and take their seats. No one's hair was combed, no one shaved, and teeth brushed --- ?? I doubt it! There were 2 couples and one teen. One adult male and the teen were barefoot.

I have never seen such a thing in all my travels - anywhere! And no, we said nary a word, tho' my mouth did drop open momentarily! My husband wanted to speak to the manager, but since we had nearly finished eating & were moving on in our travels, I didn't see the point. They caught a few stares and gapes from the other diners in there as well. One couple turned around and left.

Wearing a robe over one's swimsuit from their cabin to the pool? No problem. Watching a bunch of slobs walking into a public eating area in their PJ's looking as if they had just rolled out of bed - definitely not acceptable, in my humble opinion, of course!

We just got off the Equinox (best cruise/nicest ship that we have been on to date) and saw the following:

-several people wearing bath robes by the pool and on their way to the spa. The world did not come to an end, nor did we see a look of shock on any bystanders (no medical assistance required)...frankly no one seemed to care or notice. Suspect the same on Hal-notwithstanding previous posts.

-M'aitre'D asked someone to remove a hat in the DR-done in a very discreet manner.

-about 40 percent, maybe less wore tuxedos, significant dropoff in formal attire for the late show and in the casino. Fortunately, the world did not come to an end. No fashion police in sight...everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time

-no report on flip flops/socks or even deck shoes and dark socks. Was not overly concerned...too busy with our own endeavours as well as keeping a sharp look out for bathrodes on deck and for inappropriate attire(whatever that is) on formal nights. Not as much smelly/offensive perfume on Celebrity as there was on our HAL cruise.

-absolutely the best entertainment we have had, with 2 sets of very interesting lectures (5 per series) on this ten day cruise.

There is no "code" regarding wearing robes in the pool area(s). Some people on here believe it should not be done, though, and think it's in very poor taste to do so. Personally, makes no difference to me.

I wonder what they recommend putting on when getting out of the pool or hot tub ?

I would venture to guess that even the ney-sayers about wearing the HAL robes anywhere outside their cabins would secretly LOVE to snuggle in one when stepping out of the pool.

JMHO.

Oh a hot, sticky Panama Canal Cruise, getting out of the pool felt wonderful because the air was so oppressive, but the pool gave great relief. The last thing I wanted to do was "snuggle" in a robe. Towel myself dry, then put on a t-shirt ... yes. "Snuggle" ... no. :)

Now, if it were a cold-weather cruise ... you bet! But I don't often swim on cold-weather cruises.

What's the difference between a "bathrobe" and a "beachrobe"?

Growing up we always used nice terry beach robes at the beach. When we were little they had little sea creature emblems on them, as we grew up, they were just plush terry robes. Great way to get from the beach to the pavillion/lockers to change.

They still sell them on swimwear websites, and our swim team used them at the high school.

Personally I see nothing wrong with a nice terry beachrobe.

(I realize that the cruiseline sees them as "bathrobes" )

Seeing someone walking the ship in a robe brings a smile to my face because those wearing them usually look so relaxed and content. Judging them never comes to mind.

We stayed at the Fairmont Hotel in Whistler B.C. this summer, where they provided very nice robes for us. It is considered an upscale hotel and it was quite common to see guests wearing robes between their rooms and the spa/pool.

Now I myself would not wear the robes outside of the room but that is because of how lousy I would look in one, not because of what others would think.

You just took the words right out of my mouth!!! Growing up summers on Cape Cod, my mom always bought us terry beach robes...in fact, when our granddaughters were a bit younger, I bought them some. Adults also wore "beach robes." My mom wouldn't think of going to the beach without wearing a robe.

I'm sure there are still people who think it is "improper" to be seen in public in a swimsuit. Therefore, the robe.

I have a Fresh Produce cotton coverup that I wore at the pool over my swimsuit, but a terry robe would have felt better...and absorbed the moisture as well.

We've never used the robes on the ship, but it matters not, to me anyway, if folks wear them to and from the pools.

Just got off the Oosterdam yesterday...we used the hydro spa. While buying the pass, the employee told us to come up , and I quote, "wearing your swimsuit and your bathrobe".

We did, and the earth continued to revolve without incident.

As I am the original person who started this thread, I must say that I have enjoyed reading the various responses on here :).

I would have had a really hard time keeping a straight face when she said that.

Too funny :D

Hope you had a fun cruise and enjoyed the hydro spa. Your were told exactly what I was when we were on the Zuiderdam. Sometimes topics seem so earth shattering on CC and so inconsequential when onboard. Cherie

We've been gone for 2 weeks and can't believe this thread is still going! Our cruise was on the Zaandam and we saw a few people in robes by the pools and in the spa; no one seemed to pay any attention to them.

We spent the past week on the Oosterdam...

... we saw a couple of bathrobes in the Lido, usually really late at night. We saw a couple of them by the pools, and once or twice in the halls/elevators.

Ho hum.

It was a great cruise :)

Would this do?

Maybe if we could get Hal to make their Robes in color, they would be more acceptable.

That would make a pretty pool cover-up. There's lots of colors, so would pick up the colors of most any swimsuit. Add a terry lining, and I think you're on to something here.

Much better looking than the cabin robes.

Let me see if I understand. A colorful bathrobe is fne as a pool cover-up but the white bathrobes provided by HAL is never to be worn outside of the stateroom?
