Coffee card update

more cruises

Recommended Posts

Hmm... wonder what they're going to do for our cruise, since it will start before the 13 nov deadline, but extend beyond it... if I find free wifi in port, I'll try to remember to update this page.

Previous posts put the tentative rollout date for the new cards as February 2012. I don't know if the 13th on the Ruby is part of testing their new program but they have recently tried changes on a few ships before finalizing them.

With that line of reasoning, I should take one of my old soda card stickered cruise cards and ask to have a new sticker placed on my new cruise card. There's no expiration date on the sticker.

But your old soda card was not good on other cruises now was it? Apples and oranges. Apples and oranges. I suggested issuing a new card not transferring a sticker from one to another.

According to the ads on Princess TV, the new cards will allow you to use your punches in the future for specialty coffees, BUT free brewed coffee, hot chocolate and tea will ONLY be for that specific cruise.

All they need to do is put a date stamp on the card to show when the free stuff will end.

Sure it is. No expiration date if you want to get technical. Where on the "old" coffee card does it specifically say, "Good for unlimited brewed coffee on any future cruise" or something similar?

Princess marked these original cards as being good from ship to ship, cruise to cruise and free unlimited brewed coffee as long as one punch remained on the card. They are not living up to that part of the contract.

I suppose you could sue them, and it you prevailed, you'd

get back your original price of the card...

Or, simply take your cruise business elsewhere in disgust.

To the people who want cards with fewer punches. Careful

what you wish for. You might get a card with 10 punches

for the same price as the old card.

Earlier in the thread, it said you can use the old punches for a brewed coffee. I'm not sure why you'd do that, other than to use up the card, because the punches cost more than the brewed coffee.

I think our plan will be, since I drink a lot of brewed, and my husband drinks specialty, is to bring our old cards on the 2 week cruise but buy a new one so that I get the brewed. If he uses up the new punches, we'll go into our old cards.

He'll use the old cards on coastals, and I'll just buy the brewed, since they're typically only a couple of days.

With the soda program it is sold on the basis of it being cruise specific however with the "old" coffee cards they were sold to pax on the understanding that they were not cruise specific and a the holder of a card would be able get a brewed coffee so long as there was at least one punch left in the card. I think the programs are quite different. With the coffee card there is an implied contract. Now is the change going to impact my life seriously....no.... but IMO it just another stupid decision on the part of Princess. I mean really what does a few cups of brewed coffee really cost Princess compared to the ill will this nickle and dimeing move causes.

As many will tell ypu it was when it was bought and when they pushed the program. In other words they, PRINCESS, set the policy and condone it for many years. Where does your soda card specifically say all the drinks it is good for?

Once again, here's what it says on the back of a coffee card...there's nothing about unlimited brewed coffee so Princess can change their procedure since it's being used by some as a "lifetime brewed" with one punch remaining card which was never their plan.

"Congratulations on purchasing your Premium Coffee Card. Present this card when receiving your specialty coffee and your server will punch a hole into one of the crowns"

As always, here's is the relevant part of the passage contract:

"You must at all times obey all the rules, regulations and orders of the ship, Carrier and the Captain".

With that clause, Princess can set any rules they like that do not conflict with the passage contract. So they can change things like the coffee card program at any time without any recourse to the passenger, legally speaking.

Thanks...always appreciate your thoughtful posts particularly when others complain it's not fair! ;)

They have every right to stop selling the old cards, and start with ship/cruise specific cards, but they must live up to their promises for those of us who have the old cards and continue to provide unlimited free brewed coffee as long as the old card has at least one punch remaining.

As an alternative, they could refund, on a pro rata basis, the remaining punches on the card as an OBC to the passenger with such card.

I agree. If Princess had a decent cup of coffee this wouldn't be necessary. You'd think they could make good coffee. After a good meal they serve mud they pass off as coffee. RCL serves Seattle coffee and it's complimentary 24-7

And there are many complaints about it on the RCL boards.

That's the problem...so many things are subjective including coffee & those unhappy scream the loudest. It's just one thing on a cruise & for me Princess provides the best overall experience in my price range. We all have options so if coffee is a major issue, then they should try another cruise line. However based on your research, they won't find it with the coffee on RCL...can't please everyone! :p

Newbies who read posts about so many things being terrible wonder why they want to cruise but we know better that complaints should be taken with a grain of salt!

Sorry, I feel all the ballyhoo abut RCL is a little misplaced. Was on the Navigator a few years back and tried the "coffee" at the little snack bar in the Plaza deck (comparable to the IC on Princess) st 2 AM after a casino session. Took a cup of coffee from the dispenser. All I'll say is that if that was "Seattle's Best" then I shudder at the thought of what "Seattle's Worst" must be like. It tasted like somebody burned the beans before making the coffee.

As far as I an concerned, the new Princess policy is fair. DW has a cup of cappuccino (occasionally two) a day, and finds the HC coffee adequate for breakfast. I get a cup of brewed whan I wake up at 6 AM (lovely out on deck at that hour) and "pass" at breakfast. At dinner, I leave the DR without having coffee, get some at the IC and relax with it before going off to the evening's entertainment.

Feel free to file a lawsuit for breach of contract. Good luck. Personally I don't have a lot of sympathy for your case.

I had the same experience. I noticed they also had packets of Instant Maxwell House available at the cafe. I think that about sums it up. However, on recent cruises I noticed that coffee has gotten better but only in the dining room and room service. Forget about the cafe and the Windjammer. It may be the same product but it doesn't taste the same.

I've had the coffee on RCCL that they say is Seattle's Best and its just plain awful. I don't know if its how they make it or what, but its not an improvement.

And when you purchased the card you were TOLD that you could get all the free coffee and tea you wanted as long as you had punches left on your card. This is an implied reason to purchase the card. Can anybody here deny that this was the case when they bought their card? Can any of you who think the purchase is ripping off the company deny this is not what is used to sell the cards? So you see what is written and what is verbally said as implied gets into very murky legal situations. Is a verbal statement by an employee repeated many times by other employees on different ships an implied agreement for the company to uphold?

I bought a card & heard from others (including on CC) about unlimited brewed coffee for life...not from a Princess employee so my answer is NO!

While I'm not an attorney, word of mouth doesn't hold much water & I am not aware of anything in writing beyond the clear statement on the card. Good luck finding someone to take your case because as you can read not many agree with your point of view. If the statement I posted still isn't good enough proof of what was 'legally' purchased then apparently nothing else will convince you.

Even if others think it's wrong most are willing to accept an equitable solution for the future...use the old cards' specialty drink punches & to purchase a new card for unlimited free brewed coffee during a specific cruise. All of this hoopla over this proposed change comes from those who used a one punch card as a unlimited, lifetime free brewed coffee card. If it wasn't used that way then no changes would have been necessary.

The ones who scream the most apparently are the biggest abusers of the old system & thus caused this change in procedure.

As I purchased a couple of cards (unused ) just before we left our last cruise as I had some OBC left and we are not cruising again until 2013 do you think Princess will exchange these cards for a ship specific one on the Grand?

All of this is based on a couple of onboard employees statements but don't doubt that changes are coming but not finalized yet. Hopefully there won't be a cutoff date to use previously purchased cards. If not, after the changes are made then might be time to seek a solution.

I seriously doubt many of us were gullible enough to think we'd bought a coffee card for life.

It was too good to be true from the very gitgo.

The numerous threads on CC bragging about "free" coffee haven't helped. We all know Princess employees and management read CC with a great regularity.
