Welcome aboard the Coral Princess as we begin our 14 day cruise from LA, thru the canal, to Ft. Lauderdale.

Those who followed my previous LIVE, know we disembarked the Star in San Francisco a week ago and flew to Las Vegas for four days. Had good time Vegas style and also with friends Meredith and Bob. On Thursday we flew to LAX and checked into a Marriott in Torrance. Had a four hour lunch with CC members Astro Flyer (including spouse) and Pam in Ca. Part of Friday spent shopping and visiting relatives. Checked out of Marriott Saturday AM and checked into Crowne Plaza San Pedro. We got our room at 11 AM , we were given 2 free vouchers for wine (not bad for a room booked for $67 on Priceline),and then spent the rest of the day with family. We had hoped to meet some of our roll call people in the bar last night at 9:00 PM, but the only ones who showed up were us. Our friends Amelia and Ken who live up in Ventura drove down to have breakfast with us. So nice to have such good friends who also drove us to the pier so we could unload our stuff very close to the entrance. We were in no rush, but were still on board about 12:30. We have a balcony cabin on Emerald forward with two fairly new tightly webbed chairs.

EMBARKATION DAY SUNDAY 10/28.

Checking in was a breeze. Zero waiting time. To those who have been wondering about the new limit on wine, all I can say is; “what limit?” Nobody looked to see what we had and I had 5 bottles. Muster was at 3:30 and our one checked bag had not yet arrived.

Pertinent on board info:

Captain : Nicolo Binetti

Hotel Manager: Karin Luppes

Cruise Director: Gavin Chandler

Staff Capt: Aldo Traverso

Customer Service: Pieter Boucher

Maitre d’ Luigi Moretti

CC Hostess: Heather

FCC: not yet known

We got around to grabbing something to eat up in HC around 2:00. I wanted to unpack our two wheelies and have everything in place before the real clothes arrived. I also had all of our tees and jeans on hand and prepared a laundry bag to go out tonight. We already have a week’s worth of laundry, so nice to have the amenity. Our mini bar was changed almost immediately and they also delivered 6 wine glasses as a starter.

On the “menu” tonight is the Welcome Aboard Show featuring comedian Rodney Johnson and the documentary A Man, A Plan, A Canal Panama in the Universe Lounge. The movie People Like Us will be in the theater (welcome aboard show is early) and MUTS has Mirror Mirror. At 9:30 there is a lecture “Dreams and Nightmares in Panama”, a presentation of the Spanish and French eras in Panama.

Daniel Oliver is the pianist in Crooners, Johnny Favorite Band is in Wheelhouse and Magnitude is in Explorer’s.

This about does it for today. Still waiting for my suitcase. Will try to post this now, though not sure whether or not internet is viable.

I just got off the Coral this morning!! We had a great cruise!! Perfect seas. And I LOVE Gavin and his assistant Callie. They are the best CD staff I have had in a LONG time. And Luigi took great care of us too.

Pia, please say "hi" to Callie for me. He is soooo funny!!! You will love his trivias.

Have a great cruise!! I will be re-living my last two weeks as you reverse the route we took! :D:D:D

Ahhhhhhhh...... Been waiting for this thread to start. I'll be sending the updates to my wife every day to help her make it through our last week of work before we leave for Hawaii.

We've talked about maybe making this our next cruise and will be quite interested in your take on how it goes. Many thanks for taking the time to include so many folks in your trips.

Pia,

Several times you've posted in regard to this same thing - taking 5 bottles on board at embarkation. Can you tell me how you are carrying the bottles? Are they in a bag, a carry-on, a backpack, a ?????

I'd like to take a similar amount on board Star on November 5th and am quite curious to know your carrying method.

I am trying to get my wardrobe together for my cruise next month. Some posters mentioned that the ship is hot onboard. I often wear long-sleeved shirts onboard, because I am cold natured. Should I just take tank tops and tee shirts?
I was recently on the Island Princess from Vancouver to FLL. From the time we arrived in Cabo until we were close to FLL, the weather was very hot and humid. Cabins on the sunny side of the ship tended to get very warm, particularly if the curtains weren't closed. That's not because the A/C was ineffective but because it was just plain hot outside. For the most part, I didn't find the inside temps in public rooms warmer than usual. In the evening, I wore a light sweater and was comfortable. During the day, I wore lightweight pants and t-shirts or 3/4-length shirts.

Thanks for the info re: carrying on the wine. My mom and I hope to bring six bottles of Prosecco on the Golden later this year. For the poster asking how to carry that many, we always use a cloth tote bag made to hold 6 bottles. I think my mother got it at a Ralphs grocery store.

I always take a sweater with me and layers. When are you sailing?

I was on the Coral in mid February. It was not the rainy season either but hear it can be more humid and wet when it is. It was chilly outside the first two or three days heading down the Pacific coast. Jeans and even a sweatshirt to keep warm when on our balcony. And I felt that inside the MDR, theater and some bars, it was on the cool side, so I always took my sweater with me, just in case. Once you get to the ports, it warms up and shorts, tanks and t-shirts will keep you happy during the day.

Good luck and have a great cruise!

I definitely found the Coral to be hot!! There was only one night where it was cool in the Universe Lounge.

It has been a long time between drinks since I cruised through the Panama Canal, so I'm going to enjoy sharing your Panama cruise, Pia.

I thought I was going to miss a lot of it, cruising myself, but realised it will only be the last few days.

Thanks for the map, David. I love to see where Pia is going next!
