Cheers for couples!

I just got off Carnival Horizon and was speaking to a couple in the casino. The wife said she wished that Carnival would start a “couples cheers plan” for those that aren’t heavy drinkers. That way the couple could buy the plan and share the 15 drinks between them both. Sounds like Carnival could sell a lot more cheers plans if they started doing this! Maybe if customers started suggesting it they may consider it 🙂

At what price? Lot's of people only want to buy one Cheers package for a couple since one doesn't drink. These people would just buy the couples plan just to get around the current rule. One person in the couple would drink all 15. This would be a work around unless the price was higher than the standard Cheers for one .

Keep in mind Cheers is designed to make Carnival money. Although many passengers definitely benefit from the Cheers program, Carnival would not continue the program if they weren’t benefiting from it financially.  I don’t see any chance of Carnival selling a Cheers package under the current rules that could be shared by two people

Obviously, the fewer drinks someone gets with Cheers, the more profit Carnival makes. Requiring all adults in a cabin to buy it increases the likelihood that at least one occupant is a light drinker and won't be drinking anything near 15 a day.  So there are more "lightweights" to average out the "15-a-days", and in the end Carnival's gross profit from bar sales is high than it would be if all drinks were a la carte.  This is the only reason Cheers works from Carnival's perspective.

There seem to be more than enough people willing to buy it for all adults in the room at current price points.

For Carnival to introduce a Couples package, it would have to be priced at twice the current price for 30 drinks to be at least profit neutral, at which point you are effectively back to current policy of making all adults purchase in a cabin purchase it individually.

Carnival has too many takers with the current policy to risk losing profit on couples Cheers packages.

Right, it appears that Carnival is selling a lot of booze so I doubt they will change anything that would reduce profits. I would like to know how many Cheers customers use the 15 drinks. I suspect most do even when they have to pass drinks off to other. (Something I witnessed several times on our last cruise.)

It is all part of the current pricing model. It's the same with any "all-inclusive option." Take for example nice "all you can eat" buffets. The average couple isn't going to pig out. The person that consumes the most is often the one making the decision to purchase it. They feel they get their monies worth because they ate lots of prime rib and crab. Meanwhile, the other person ate a little bit of pasta and a crab cake. For $90, the restaurant made a huge profit.

I don't think this is so far fetched... Carnival could have a couples package where its 20 drinks max between both and charge maybe 75.00 versus 103.00 for individual plan for both people with the 15 per person max... As long as carnival can price out so they continue the great profit margin for themselves, I think it would be something for them to consider..

I would love to see a couples plan, but my deficient math brain is not clear on this suggestion.  Are you proposing a plan for 2, to share 20 drinks per day, at a total cost of $150 per day, or $75 per day for each person??  That would could be profitable for Carnival, but be a bit pricy on the combined wallets of the couple, no?  However, some couples may be very willing to pay that.  IMHO, it would be a nice option to have, and each couple would use their own good judgement on whether it makes sense for them.

I believe the suggestion was for a plan that covered the couple at $75 per day; so more than one individual plan but still less than 2. I doubt this will ever happen. I’ve not heard of any cruise line offering ‘shared’ plans so there’s no competition in that space. Carnival doesn’t sell cheers as a ‘15 drinks per day plan’ and the expectation that many passengers will hit 15 drinks a day. They are selling it as an ‘all Inclusive beverage program’ to compete with all the other lines unlimited beverage packages with fine print at the bottom that you are limited to 15 alcoholic drinks. And frankly, it sounds like there are plenty of people willing to buy cheers at the current price and terms so why would they offer it at a discount for couples?

I agree that there should be some other option. Maybe a higher price with the same limit and the allowance to "share". There are many scenarios when the other adult in the cabin doesn't drink but they require both adults or neither to buy the package.  There are no exceptions to this (even pregnancy).

Having said that.

I am trying cheers for the first time on my Feb 2019 cruise. I am not a heavy drinker. However, I am looking forward to trying many different drinks without a worry if I don't finish it and stepping out of my comfort zone. I do not anticipate reaching the 15 drink limit every day because of ports. I will report afterward whether this was a good decision
