How would you compare the Allure to the Edge

Hi:  My husband and I are very active in our mid 60s.  We haven't cruised in a few years.  We have cruised on the Oasis and Allure and even though we didn't use the flow rider, rock climbing, etc., we absolutely loved the ships.  So much going on.  I am now looking at the Edge and wondering if it has the same excitement as the Allure and Oasis.  How about the food?  Though we are not fussy eaters.  We like the entertainment, the casino and a good gym.  We also love the promenade.  We like the places to roam around and we loved the front of the ship with the additional buffet.  Every part of the ships really we loved.    I have heard the food is better on Celebrity.  The itinerary really doesn't matter too much to us as long as we are in the Caribbean.   Thanks for any input.  No cruise to us is a bad cruise but we would love a great one!

There can not be a comparison. the Oasis and the Allure are an amusement park on the high seas, Celebrity is a real cruise.

On Celebrity ships you will not find a wave simulator, climbing wall, zip line, carousel of little horses, etc. Celebrity cruises are more focused on adult people, you will not see young people running like crazy, etc.You will love Celebrity

We mostly disliked Oasis....counted the days until we got off.  It was high tech but not even  close to EDGE tech.

 

We thought Oasis was too crowded, too busy,  more for families with children,  and had not so great dining/ service even in the Specialty Rests.  We had to reserve for shows and events, and then line up anyhow,  Had a big  indoor mall,  not high end...It was very windy at the outside pool area  The spa  was typical Steiner.. Central Park was ok but uncovered...We did enjoy the  adult only  Solarium and large hot tub. aft.  Diamond  cocktail party with small buffet was  great,.better than dinner,

 

We loved EDGE, never felt crowded other than near the Martini bar area.. and it was very loud there,   The ship was  upscale and classy, had  very good  to excellent dining,  had an amazing ( Steiner related?) thermal suite and spa area,...sea views., very nice gym..all new..  The ship had an amazing art collection,  and a beautiful  modern theater. The  EDEN area was awesome ( we avoided the show and creatures) ,  One issue was  wind on outside and top decks and  also too sunny in  some spots with no shade.  Can be mellow or active,....lots of choices,  but definitely a very nice cruise experience for us!

That is true..we are booked in a Sunset Veranda next time.

 

Oddly our cabin on Oasis was a balc cabin,  but our floor overlooked an atrium....so we could only go up and down on one side of the ship..It was very inconvenient and annoying!

There is no comparison between Oasis class and Edge. Oasis class is so much better. If you like Oasis class and the promenade you probably won't like Edge. The only thing about the Edge that comes close to Oasis class is specialty dining.

We just sailed on Allure a couple of weeks ago. We were is a Grand Suite (the name of that class may be different now.) We have sailed every Oasis Class ship, but this was our first suite. Having a suite made a big difference in that Coastal Kitchen, the dining room for suites and Pinnacle is open all three meals every day including port days. You really never need to fight your way in crowded dining such as the Windjammer. Seats are reserved for suites guests in the ice rink, Aqua show and theater, but not Comedy Club. 

 

We have sailed every Solstice Class ship, but not Edge. That said, I find it hard to imagine that the general vibe among Solstice Class ships and Edge varies to a dramatic degree. The OP stated they were energetic which is not an adjective I think of on Celebrity. We sail Oasis Class ships when we want a high energy, entertainment packed cruise and Celebrity when we want to relax and chill out. Still I would never discourage the OP from giving Celebrity a try. They might discover they will like to do what we do, cruise Oasis Class when we want lots to do and sail Celebrity when we want to relax in an elegant environment.

We’ve sailed Oasis and Allure a number of times and for us Edge is the winner.  There is plenty of entertainment, you can actually enjoy the buffet and there are a lot of nocks and crannies to find quiet space.

Be careful about this one.  The Oasis class ships have the central park balconies that face inward on the ship and you can't see the ocean.  From my perspective, those aren't balconies either.

Agree that the atrium-view balconies are not true balconies. But they do in fact have true ocean facing balconies in comparison to the non-balcony IV

RCL vs X discussions rear their head at least weekly. It's pretty much a cliché how X fans point out the rock walls, flow riders and other attractions onboard the RCL mega ships. It's as if people forget RCL has lots more to offer. Plenty of people still enjoy RCL without climbing walls and trying out the flow rider etc.

Just a different experience between the Oasis/Allure and EDGE.

We tried Oasis and it fell short for us..others seem to love it.  Here are a few more comparisons to help OP decide,,,

 

Two other areas on Oasis we did not enjoy:  the interior library  was used as a napping/ snoring room by day;  and the very small  unstaffed computer room was like a large closet.   Unfortunately,  EDGE has no library ( yet),  and  the EDGE  Computer  area is more about sales but the staff there is awesome!

 

The " famous" Central Park deli with the special  roast beef lunch  sandwich smelled like wet dog from the mopping and table cleaning rags,,,guests were very rude and pushy..spilled food and soda in the floors.  By contrast the EDEN cafe was great for brunch and lunch.,, very  clean,  orderly, It offered  fresh food and healthy food and bread,  great desserts,  coffee and tea.  Good layout but could use more seating,,,

 

 We thought the Rising Tide Bar on Oasis was  like a gimmicky carnival ride...compared the the Magic Carpet where you could just chill out.,,weather and wind permitting.  But EDGE could definitely use a wine bar and jazz club.  

 

Not sure OP would enjoy EDGE based upon the list of things they enjoy...but won't know unless they try it.

I noted that you used the words excitement and so much going on.  You may be disappointed with the Edge.  What I really enjoyed about Royal Caribbean ships was the energy level of the ship.  There was so much going on, especially at night.  However, if you want a quieter, relaxed atmosphere,  Celebrity should be considered.  You will note that the entertainment and activities are much stronger points for Royal Caribbean.

If they had those there would be more children and it would be just like Royal.

Have sailed on both and enjoyed both.  The entertainment is much better on the Allure and Oasis class ships.  Food, IMO both very good.  The edge however has a few dining rooms and the variety is really nice.  We really enjoyed the suite deck on the Edge, but again the suite deck on the Oasis class ships also good- perhaps the edge is better.  The gym on Royal is better.  The edge has a more upscale vibe and less kids. 

 

IMO if it really doesn't matter to you, I would consider price.  Probably a better deal on an Oasis class ship- and if you want to consider the Silhouette or Reflection on Celebrity they are really nice also.  Enjoy your cruise.

Edge has a more regular classic cruise ship design with contemporary styling and some unusual quirks while Oasis class has a truly unique ship design, a class of its own. 

 

Edge is quieter and more relaxing and aims to appear unscale and refined while Oasis class is more family and activity oriented and aims to appear fun and exciting. 

 

Edge has better food over all and Oasis class ships have better shows and entertainment. 

 

That said there is a lot of over lap to offer a happy medium for most.  

 

On our last sailing on Symphony of the Seas (an Oasis class ship) activity crew told us even on a particularly active week in spring break only about 1/3 of the passengers ever participated in any “active” activities.  Most would prefer to relax or just to watch the activities.

When I read this, I thought it could have been written by me. DH and I are now in our late 60s. We have just started sailing on Celebrity over the past two years...prior to that we mostly sailed Royal. Celebrity is definitely more sedate than Oasis class ships. We have really enjoyed Celebrity.... for us it is very comfortable. We felt at home when we first boarded an S class ship... now one of my favorite classes. When we were planning our Oasis class cruises... I spent hours trying to coordinate shows with my time dining schedule. Then I would study the Compass to try to make sure we didn't miss anything. Over time this whole process became so stressful... we just stopped and saw shows as we felt like it. But then I felt guilty that we were missing something.... Celebrity has less activities but I don't miss that at all. We don't have children and all the kids activities or kids... never bothered us... but Celebrity generally has fewer... and like Royal... you don't seem them much until dinner. Edge is a much smaller ship than Oasis Class... so less area to visit. Food on Celebrity is better. I think that when you have nearly twice as many meals to prepare... odds of some being cold or off are higher on Oasis. 

We liked Edge... but we went early on and some of the entertainment was not our cup of tea, as they say. But I believe that they have made some changes over time.... Eden is lovely to see... nice views out the back... Alas there is no place for non suite passengers to have a nice view out the front... like the solarium on Oasis.... The top deck is lovely.... the roof top garden is a bit windy and so is the MC.... but I think they are trying to provide some wind breaks. Did not go to the casino..so not sure. The Ocean view cafe is IMO the best buffet at sea. Very high ceilings give a great view and really nice variety of food. I also think the Ocean View deserts are much better than on Royal. The theater is lovely... great venue for most any type of entertainment. We missed most of it... were using a scooter and tended to arrive late...so seating was an issue.

We are in our 60's and LOVED Edge.  We have done 32 cruises, all of the Oasis class ships and we still put Edge as our favorite. So it is hard to compare as its not "apples to apples".  Two different types of experiences.  We are doing Symphony in October but it will probably be our last big ship.  We have Apex booked  next year, and I am more excited to do this than Symphony.

There is enough similarity already thanks to LLP, but  that one step further  would make X ships  Royal C  clones....

 

We prefer  sep identities for the 2 cruise lines , and a more adult experience  on X,  with sufficient  children and teen programming...minus the rock walls,  floe riders, zip lines, etc.
