Average age and other questions

There will be 4 in my party in our mid 30s traveling for the first time on celebrity next year to the Mediterranean. I’m not really concerned that we will most likely be below the average age.

 

One of my fondest memories on my last cruise was meeting a senior named Carol who explained that it was cheaper for her to see the world on a cruise ship rather than stay in assisted living. Also on the ship she gets to have “sexy young men” taking care of her 😂

We have sailed Celebrity over 25 ( of 60 plus cruises) times during the last 20 years and as we aged so did most of the passengers and the Ships!

On our recent transatlantic on the Edge there were over 90 couples married 50 years or more. Silhouette B2B (9 day & 12 day)in February, was the same demographics with “some younger crowd” and minimal children.

Next month we’re doing Alaska on a Princess ship with our 14 year grandson, and his concern is that he might have 2000 grandparents!!

As has already been posted, destination, length of the cruise and season will determine who has the time and the costs. September to Bermuda is already the no (fewer)children (school) which means fewer school age parents.

I’m a teacher so I assumed there would be fewer children, but that also means I had to take time off at the beginning of the school year. I have never done that before, but it’s our 25th Anniversary and we really wanted to celebrate it on our Anniversary this year. Our baby is 22, so we are past the school age children stage as well. 😁

Ours is 27 and we are 46-47. Being emptynesters is amazing.

One thing though .. we thought when we reach this age we will pick cheaper times for cruises rather than school vacations. However when this happened we started to cruise more... and to have 5 a year we need to use weeks with holidays which bring us back to popular time/higher pricing/kids. Oh well.  🙂

We aren’t empty nesters yet. Our son just graduated from collage and got a job in his field right away. He is working in uptown Charlotte. He still lives with us and is planning to for a year or two to save some money.  He will be watching our two dogs while we’re gone. ☺️

 

Yes, we will be on the Sept. 1 cruise to Bermuda.

Well, it is almost same as empty nesting in regards to vacations. Even more convenient if you have dogs.  🙂

We are on the same cruise. It is earlier in September and I think crowd will be younger than later into Fall.

Very true!!  Yes, he always takes care of our dogs when we travel.  It’s so convenient for us and the dogs because they love him.

You'll probably read on here that Celebrity is trying to attract millennials these days. If that's true then they are failing miserably. I'd advise you ignore the models used by Celebrity's marketing department and watch a few recent videos on Youtube. You'll get a good idea on passenger demographics that way. 

We love Celebrity and also cruise on Royal C and NCL.

Celebrity's average passenger is older than on those other lines.

 

Also, it depends the cruise.  Longer cruises you get more retired people (older).  Shorter cruisers have younger passengers.

We do a lot of two week cruises and find very few children on those cruises.  The average age is more like late 60s than late 50s.

Does the Summit have the interactive parties?  Those can be alot of fun.

Just know going in that Summit is a totally different experience than Oasis. We have sailed Summit and Harmony (sister to Oasis) and while we did enjoy the Harmony itself and all of the activities there were SO many kids on board, even in October that this spoiled a lot of it for us.  Summit is very laid back.  The crowd on your Summit trip will not be Oasis young but as I mentioned earlier, you'll have plenty of folks your age.

I'm in my 30s and my mom in her 60's. We took the Summit to Bermuda mother's day weekend last year and this year. Same exact week, same exact itinerary and ship - but our experiences were vastly different. Last year we felt there was a good mix of ages - we met a lot of great people at trivia and the various interactive game shows - and I still keep in touch with some of them on facebook. This year we felt like it was a floating nursing home - the age demographic skewed very heavily into the late 70s/early 80s. We ended up going to bed far earlier this year because the entertainment was lacking and we didn't make the connections with people that we so look forward to.  I really think it's a crapshoot -there wasn't any reason why this year should have been a different demographic. 

 

I will say though Bermuda is the absolute best place to visit - you'll have a great time. It's my favorite port by a long shot, and I've done most itineraries in the Caribbean. You'll have a great time regardless!

I hope I don't feel like I'm on a floating nursing home!!  I'm sorry you did, especially at such a young age!  We kind of felt that way on our one and only Princess cruise, hence why we haven't sailed with them again.  Of course any cruise is a fun cruise, some are just better than others.  We are really looking forward to celebrating our anniversary in Bermuda.

The age can vary immensely depending on Destination, Length of Cruise and Date.    As a general rule the longer the cruise the higher the average age (because the can get away for longer periods of time without work obligations).  Cruises 7 days or less tend to attract younger cruisers and cruises during holiday and summer season attract more younger families and children. 

 

We just returned from a B2B New England Bermuda cruise the second starting in Mid June had a much younger demographics and many more kids.

We cruised on the equinox last June and there were plenty of all ages. No, not as many children as a Rccl cruise.  It was a very nice mix of passengers.

I just returned from 7 day Alaska and was very pleasantly surprised at the good mix of ages on board. There was activities for every age group and entertainment for all ages and hours. There were two comedians, there were later night adult oriented activities, the sky lounge had an ABBA night with the DJ, there was a house band, guitar soloist, string duo, jazz trio in the grand foyer, silent disco was huge. There was also a 10:15 movie each night, shops were open till 11:30, the casino was active (and actually paid out!). The kids group had their own activities and some of them were family oriented like a digital scavenger hunt and family karaoke. It’s the first cruise I’ve been on in a while where I felt like I needed to carry the activity guide with me so as not to miss out. As well, I was surprised at the mix of nationalities on board...X is really doing their marketing it seems.

We like a lot of the entertainment that Celebrity offers: before and after a meal we go to a bar, enjoy the music and perhaps dance too.

Our favourite place is the Ensemble Lounge: music there is usually a singer, duo or group. We've loved the Irish/American duo, the Spanish violin and 'cello duo, the guitarist who liked his Donovan, an American trio who were into jazz big time...

The musicians appear at different venues around the ship both during the day and in the evening.

Sometimes we enjoy the music/dancing of one act so much that we will change bar/lounge just to follow the act.

As an recently retired music teacher, I enjoy the high standards of the smaller acts. The larger bands can be fun too!

We don't do the shows because we live an hour from London and we can see great performances in the West End, the O2, Albert Hall, The Royal Opera House and so many other places.

Enjoy Celebrity! You'll find it similar to Princess but... well... in our opinion much better.

Our next cruise is on celebrity again.  Like others have said Celebrity is generally an older clientele than NCL and Royal.  But we have never had trouble meeting younger passengers - we are late 30s/early 40s and there were others like us.  The production shows and other theater entertainment on Celebrity are much worse IMHO (for a younger audience) and we skip those now and just do other things instead.

A friend of mine mentioned that outside ocean view there was a lineup of wheelchair, like an old age home. They can hardly converse because all these oldies gave them the “look”.

As someone with limited mobility thanks to severe osteoarthritis and other health difficulties thanks for that comment about wheelchair users! Do you include any aged disabled wheelchair user in that comment? I might be using mobility aids but I am far from brain dead or removed from having fun. I suspect your "noise" might be an anathema to me.

I think you'll enjoy the cruise.  You guys are the same ages as me and the wife.  We also like live music, comedy and a having a good time.  We have had some great Celebrity cuises (and a dud here and there too).  But our 7 day caribbean cruises are always fun. The Summit is a smaller ship so there are less entertainment venues than the bigger NCL, RCCL ships. So keep an eye on the daily planner to see what's happening and where.  There will usually only be one or two things going on at any one time.   Don't miss the silent disco.  There's usually 2 or 3 of them and they are a blast.  The entertainment on Celebrity isn't as good as NCL or RCCL but it can still be pretty good.  As long as you get a decent DJ and house band you should have a good time.  The production shows are OK (I'm like your husband, I go because my wife goes).  They do sometimes have some really silly stuff like lame magic/ventriloquist shows.  The Martini Bar is usually hopping in the early evening and the late night action is usually in the Sky Lounge.  If they have a late night pool deck party those are usually fun.  I hope you don't like to stay up too late.  This is one area that drives us nuts on Celebrity. After midnight it's sometimes hard to find any action (except the casino). The lounge will stay open later if there are a couple of dozen guests still partying but that depends on the passengers on your cruise.  We've had some cruises where there are a bunch of party animals and we can keep them open till 2am or later.  On other cruises it's a ghost town by midnight.

What is this silent disco I keep reading about?  I see people wearing headphones. Do they sanitize them after each use?

 

I love the shows that involve singing and dancing!  I wouldn’t enjoy magic or ventriloquism. I would opt for something else that night. We don’t typically stay up past midnight, as I like to get up early enough to get a spot by the pool. 

 

I’m certain we will find something to enjoy each evening. Besides, we are going to Bermuda so I’m assuming there is no curfew... we could always find something fun to do on land if we so desire.

You wear headphones and there are 3 different stations you can listen too. You might have one playing modern hip-hip, one playing 80's and one playing 60's music.  The headphone light up either green, red, or blue depending on what station you are tuned into.  It sounds silly and looks ridiculous if you are walking past but trust me it's a lot of fun and they often run out of headphones.  No idea if they sanatize them but I would suspect they do.  If you are concerened you could take a sanatizing wipe with you to clean them.
