Will We Be Left Lobsterless And Heartbroken?

I don't remember it being offered on our Edge cruise, and honestly I didn't miss it at all. The lobster we had on Disney and RCCL wasn't very good compared to what we get on land. Most times I ordered something else and the servers would feel the need to give me a lobster tail too.

So if it isn't offered I wouldn't miss it. The one thing I didn't see on Celebrity or RCCL was shrimp and cocktail sauce that we had on Disney in the buffet. They were a pain that they had to be peeled, but that alone was a meal.

TY for the information

Will update/sych closer to our embarkation.

We will be doing a B2B and have planned specialty dining for most nights except planned for MDR for wellington/lobster night.

I wonder if the app will update when a ship has changes to port schedule due to hurricane. Watching Dorian

That's a good question. We still used our paper dailies when onboard - we found the app wasn't always updated (my DH showed up for something that had been changed - it was correct in daily, but he used the app because that is what he had with him). That was in January - hopefully by now they are doing better at updating the app in real time. They are pushing us to use it so really should optimize it. When things actually get changed in real time, it will be a great resource for things like added activities, last minute cancellations or venue changes.

Marilyn thanks for the ship lobster night info but you are from New England.  I grew up there too (in MA).  We do not like any ship pretend-lobster!  It never compares! Only the real stuff from Maine will do, just alive before boiling or baking.  I'm getting hungry now.  Actually going to Maine next month on vacation.  Even when we took our Canada & NE cruise the ship did not serve real Northeast lobster.  But we got plenty on shore in Portland,  Halifax, PE Island and Quebec to keep us happy!

I'm with you! Just thinking about it, I am going to check for some lobster sales this week. We can get Maine lobster for $5.99 lb some weeks (1 1/4 or chix soft shell usually). We usually buy several and then have lobster rolls for a few days after our lobster/butter/new potatoes/fresh corn on the cob dinner. 🙂

i wonder if cooking other things when still alive will make them taste better? 😱

Happy cruising 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌅

I'm willing to sacrificially eat it only 6 times a month

Interesting article. Time to order some selenium supplements 😉

Glad we don't use the app.  Seems a bit wonky & not very helpful at times.

Hope they have the Prime Rib same night in all the EDGE mdrs...so we won't miss it.

Lobster...I am take it or leave it.... I enjoy it but dh highly allergic.   Last cruise  on Edge we were  in Blu  They never even took it out of the shell for me,  Modern Luxury!

I just read that 90% of Edge guests are using the app, though I'm sure how much varies greatly.

All the MDRs have the same basic menu at night so all should have prime rib the same night. Normandie always has:

Beef Tenderloin en Croute with Puff Pastry, Roquefort Fondue, Bordelaise Mushroom Sauce, which is very tasty (I had a sample on a preview cruise). 🙂

Nice...lots of dishes  sound  excellent, and first hand reviews help too!

Surprised so many are said to be using the app on EDGE.  We did not notIce lots of folks carrying phones or tablets...any more than usual. The old paper and yellow marker is our go to method but if app works for folks thats a plus for them..

We are sailing on the Summit in a week. The menus have been up on the app for a while, long enough for there to have been a change to the menus since they were originally posted. The newest updated menus show lobster in both the MDR and Luminae on night six. The previous menus had no lobster at all. I'm hoping the actual menus on our cruise follow the updated menus and not the lobsterless ones I originally saw.

We just disembarked the Summit yesterday. The "lobster tails" were served the second Chic evening. In my opinion, if the size of ones served to me are now what will be offering, it's just another thing I won't be looking forward to.

I know what you mean - it is more of a cruise tradition for us, instead of something we love.

Lobster prices were up this year when we went to Maine in June.  No bargains.  About the price you mentioned.  But I realize that is still much cheaper than what most people pay outside of Maine.  Last year we would routinely get it there for less than $5/lb sometimes even for the larger (1.5 lbs - 2.0 lbs) ones.  We are going back in a few weeks and I'll report back here on our lobster situation.

On a cruise several years ago on celebrity, two octogenarians got into a knife fight in the MDR over which table received their lobster meals first. Maybe eliminating it is a way to cut down on violence? (We were in Blu, our waiter and several passengers told us the story the next day, when the instigator was escorted off the ship with all his baggage.)

or maybe it is an attempt to get you to pay to book in one of the other restaurants, who often have lobster every day?

There's nothing like getting fresh Maine lobster in Maine. Enjoy!!

Great story! I can't imagine fighting over that lobster!  Maybe some alcohol was involved? Any clowns involved (referring to the Clown fight on a recent cruise on another line). 😉

Marilyn,

We just got back from a week in Maine.  Portland area lobster prices were around $5.99/lb but we found some for $5.50.

Unfortunately in Asheville, NC you're not getting the good stuff when it comes to lobster, which likely explains why you don't see what the fuss is about. Speaking as a former Eastern Massachusetts resident.

What you're getting there is either frozen, previously frozen, or not fresh. Cold water lobster is a very delicate flesh that rapidly deteriorates in flavor/consistency when refrigerated, and suffers a pretty sharp decline in quality when frozen.

That said, $5 is a nice price in NC even for what you're getting. Congrats on having the deal available to you.

Well, I lived in Boston for many years so I guess I do know fresh lobster. What you get on a cruise ship is worse than what we get at home since it is warm water lobster, frozen and shipped by freighter from Miami then defrosted and served. So yes, I don't see what the fuss is about lobster on a cruise ship. 😉

We buy cold water lobster tails in the middle of the mountains of NC for $4.99   Honestly don't understand the attraction.

LOL, you stole my line.  But it is ever crazier when you consider that many cruise lines use a lower cost warm water tails.  For those that cruise out of Port Everglades (Ft Lauderdale) we suggest they spend a pre-cruise night in Ft Lauderdale and go to Kelly's Landing for dinner...where they can experience real Maine Lobster.  If will be the best meal of their trip :).

We just got off a two-week Canada/New England cruise on the Summit. On our last Evening Chic night, the menu outside the MDR said the lobster tails were cold water lobster, which did surprise me on a cruise ship. Obviously, we had some excellent lobster ashore during this cruise, but those lobster tails were pretty good (except for some sort of red sauce that had been put on them).  When we ordered, our server asked if we each wanted one or two.  That was a first, usually you have to say you’d like two.  😄

I have never had lobster on a cruise ship that even compares slightly to freshly cooked cold-water northeastern lobster.  I usually just pass on cruise ship lobster - much better things on the menu for me.  I grew up in the Boston area.
