Isn’t one’s mouth always creating bacteria?  If that is the case shouldn’t this be done once a day?  After reading about it just now, maybe there is something to it.

Still feels like the upsell of nitrogen in car tires VS regular tire pump air.

It is hard to tell if they are selling you something that is iffy . This new dentist is now doing tooth implants in addition to laser treatments . The previous dentist did none of that .

Is Owen enjoying his new car ?

We now have 6” that arrived this morning .My daughter and her husband stayed overnight in a PA town on their way to visit their daughter in IN.

They drove through a lot of snow.

We had about 4 in Brooklyn when I shoveled and salted before leaving for the Anthem of the Seas. And yeah, there was snow on her.

It was cute watching the Windjammer crew on the back outdoor section taking pictures with it.

It was not so cute when a guy (or the group he was with) was throwing snowballs once it had started melting and nailed me in the nose/cheek as I was just walking outside for sail away. Even less cute when I said to the guy with a ball in his hand that it wasn’t funny and I got hit and he half-heartedly apologized. Probably less than half-hearted. Ugh.

We are preparing for our March cruise on Oasis. We just booked dinner at Ramsey’s Hells Kitchen in Miami. 3 weeks tomorrow we board the ship.

Our friends Carol and Andy will just be getting off the Oasis when you and Lisa and Owen will be boarding.  Carol and Andy were with us on the Bella cruise last year.  Jim and I will be getting on the Beyond the following day.  Graham & Nikki, and Jennifer and Dave will be sailing on our cruise also.😊

Ask for a cost estimate up front too in case this is something your insurance won’t cover and may be 100% your own cost

Good point.   I was told they would check if my insurance would cover and I never heard back if it would.   I will definitely call them Monday and ask what they found out.

I do feel it is an upsell especially since they said after they do the deep clean they will speak with me about their teeth whitening process.    I will call them Monday and see what they say about my dental insurance and my out of pocket and decide from there.

Did you report them to management?    That is so wrong!

I am looking for some advice.  My Dentist that I went to for many years retired last year and the guy that bought his practice is nice but also seems to be focused on selling extras.

I do not have any issues with my teeth or gums.  In fact I have never had a cavity and the previous Dentist prior to retiring told me to just keep up with what I am doing as I have great teeth.

The new Dentist scheduled me this Tuesday for a deep clean (as preventive maintenance) which I understand can be rather invasive of gums.   They set up two (2) separate appointments 2 weeks apart so he can do one side of the mouth then other side so I won't have discomfort from doing the whole mouth at once.

I am a bit nervous about doing this deep clean.   Has anyone ever had one?

No. But the same thing happened to me when my dentist retired. The new guy is abrupt and gives a 2 second look at my mouth. The hygienists are all about upselling. The first thing they tried to sell me on was the deep cleaning. Then the next appointment when I needed a crown he backtracked on the deep cleaning and said it wasn't necessary right now.

My last scheduled appointment with them was last February, but the road through the canyon had washed out, so I cancelled it. I have to find a new (and closer) dentist.

But in answer to your question, my secretary had the 2-appointment deep cleaning. She said it was painful. Both during the procedure and for a couple of days after. IMO, it is a money maker for the dentist.

My understanding is that deep cleaning as a preventive measure is when you have signs of the first stages of gum disease.  If everything is fine, you probably don't need it.

In my case, I did have early signs of gum disease & hesitated with the deep cleaning - i think it was called tooth scaling or root scaling - until it was too late & I needed more extensive gum surgery. I won't give details as it's gross but google gum flap surgery.

My sister in law had a lot less snow in Brooklyn than we have in LI

Enjoy your cruise on one of my favorite ships.

To me it sounds like something generated for the dentist to make money.

Not sure what it is, I would postpone it until after your cruise if you do it, don't need any issues while away on your cruise.

Ouch!    That sounds very painful.   Was it more than one area for you?

I have a very bad opinions on dentists. My last dentist was always trying to have me have extras. At one point he thought I needed a crown. I went to another dentist who said it was not necessary. The deep cleaning is not that bad and could maybe help. I’d be weary. May be time to try and find a dentist that will care for you not them.

I mentioned this the other day one dentist specialist wanted me to spend thousands for deep cleaning and other stuff , went to another last week and they didn’t think I needed anything special.

Since your previous Dentist told you you had great teeth, I'd look for a new dentist.

@Sea Dog Greg, I'm so sorry to hear of your continuing health problems.  Sending hugs and well wishes your way.  How is Linda feeling?

Thank you Pat. She’s doing good. Her therapy has picked up doing more movement which makes her pretty sore. She’s handling it well.

Additionally, their other revenue producing idea was to replace all of my old fillings, 3 or 4. I was starting to get dental anxiety, which is something I have never had before. I have a benign primary maxillary tumor in my upper palate, an ameloblastoma. Dentist didn't even mention that or want to talk about it. It is small and slow growing, and the surgery would be awful.

I have never had this deep clean thing recommended. They do love dental x-rays though. I can't remember the last time I consented to have them. I don't take lightly exposing my patients to radiation and I for sure don't take lightly exposing me to radiation.

It was painful. Upper gums both sides had the flap surgery & lower gums had the root scaling, which I guess they call deep cleaning now.  4 separate appointments, one for each quadrant spread out over 3 months, I think. This was over 10 years ago, maybe closer to 15.

But I also had gingivitis. When my dentist first mentioned the deep cleaning to me, I said I would thing about it & maybe at my next appointment in 6 months I would make a decision.  But I developed a nasty gum infection before the appointment. In your case, if everything is fine, it sounds like you don't "need" it but if insurance approves, it sounds like it won't hurt either, other than sensitive gums for a few days after.  But I might follow @Jimbo advice & wait until after your cruise, just to be safe.

Also, I loved my former dentist. He had a very conservative approach - the old, it it ain't broke, don't fix it attitude. When he was ready to retire & sell his half of the practice, he spent a year until he found someone with the same approach he & his partner had.  Bonus is she is much younger & easier on the eyes and has the same conservative approach. No upselling at all.
