Will this be the end of smoking in the casino forever?

The few cigarettes I have are the ones I truly enjoy.  Sure I could quit pretty easy but I have no desire to.  Even my doctor says she cannot argue with that.  In recent physicals I was told my lungs look great, very healthy.  Both my parents smoked as well as both my grandparents and they lived to 103 and 101.   Unfortunately I lost my father to prostate cancer in his late 80's.  Otherwise my family has a very long lifeline and I'm not worried about living to a 100.  I want to enjoy what I enjoy as long as I can.

I stopped smoking 43 years ago as 2 cigarettes became 10 became 20 a day so the solution was to stop altogether.

Health and cost was a factor as well as the smell of smoke on my clothes, hands and breath.

Several of my family died in their mid 50s through smoking.

I'm happy for you if your family genetics is long life and hope you also have a long life.

Sorry to hear you lost family members that young.  Congratulations on quitting.  I started smoking about 35 years ago when I was a teenager.  In my 20's and 30s I was about half a pack a day.  If i was out drinking at bars i would smoke more but hardly go to bars nowadays.   Smoking is still allowed at bars near me in bucks county pa.     In my 40s I cut down to just a couple a day.  Now 52 and really enjoy the couple I have and enjoy being able to smoke when I'm in casino on a ship.  Sure they will stop it someday but till that day comes i will continue to enjoy.

In fact I have not bought cigarettes in the us for probably several years as I always buy cartons in the Caribbean where I get them for $20 a carton or duty free shops at airports.  I just finished my carton fron my panama trip in january and I have one carton left from colombia.

Hope to sail soon to buy more tax free cigs.

I'm from England UK and indoor smoking is now banned including casino's on ships.

I have a non smoking casino 20 minutes from my house. Do I go there? In a word.....NO. I will spend 2.5 hours traveling to AC instead.

Can you tell me the #1 reason the 2.4 billion dollar Revel casino closed? I can, it was because they didn’t allow smoking. Before you try to retort, the judge in the bankruptcy case made them switch to smoking to try to save the casino from going under.

It still went under so maybe that's not the reason for the bankruptcy.

I wasn’t aware there were status levels for smokers too.

There are levels; I do know people who are "non-smokers" in their regular life but in a social setting will sometimes smoke like on vacation or at a bar. The ones I know would still very likely to participate in the social gathering without smoking as well.

Spoken like a true non gambler.

You are exactly the kind of person a casino host does not want to cater to.

So in answer to your question.......YES allowing smoking made all the difference in the world.

If the casinos are only interested in 'true gamblers', then those are surely the people who will still go if they have to nip outside for a smoke? There's usually only 1 casino per ship, so it's a choice between gambling with the occasional smoke break or not gambling, we all know which the 'true gambler' will pick. Add to that the volume of gamblers, both committed and casual, who cannot or will not enter the casino because it's full of smoke, and it's easy to see why casinos in countries where smoking indoors is banned have done well. Of course a smoker would not select a non-smoking casino when there's an alternative down the road, but there's rarely more than 1 casino on a ship and the inconvenience to smokers is much less than the current inconvenience to those that abstain. Attitudes have changed.

At the end of the day, the cruise lines take their cues from definable stats, not based on these forums. So we can sit here and argue over who is right, but the fact is it's coming. By all means enjoy it while it lasts, smoking in any indoor area on any cruise ship will not be permitted for long. The reason newer classes like Quantum/Oasis have multiple covered outdoor areas is that as the fleet gets updated and older ships retire they can roll out the policy to the US, and eventually China. Ultimately smoking is losing popularity and becoming less socially acceptable. It's a case of when, not if.

I am not getting the assumption that you have to be a smoker to be a serious gambler and only smokers spend several hours a night in the Casino. It has been brought up several times by different people.

With less than 17% of the World's population that smoke and the number getting smaller, statistics would suggest that for every smoker with a gambling addiction there are several non-smokers with a gambling addiction.

It won't be much longer before it will be more profitable to cater to the 83% of non-smokers than the 17% of smokers.

Then put a smoking lounge outside the casino so I dont have to get up to pool deck to smoke and dont holler about me saving my machine if I have to leave it to go outside.

All of life's choices have consequences. Choose to have a cigarette, the consequence may be losing your machine.

If you google the reasons why the property closed, smoking or lack of smoking is never mentioned.  Typical things that usually bring down a business like bad debt and gross mismanagement such as trying to bring a Vegas style to Atlantic City are listed.

Bars and restaurants also complained when the no smoking laws went into effect, but it didn’t negatively impact them at all

In our town, which bans smoking even outside restaurants and bars, restaurants and bars actually saw a rise in business as there are more people who don't smoke than people who do.

I smoked for 26 years (started at 13. Cigarette machines made it easy) and have been smoke free for 29 years (Jan. 1991). Quit cold turkey. Easy! Never got the craving again from the first day I quit. Best thing I ever did for my health and wallet.

I love London, I was last there in November and we stayed at The Rubens - beautiful hotel.     I am booked for a b2b this summer to baltic/norway but doesn't look that will be happening.   Very sad as my family planned this trip over a year ago and have booked some extra days in Copenhagen and I cannot find similiar itinerary for 2021.

Stay Well!

We live in Durham about 250 miles north of London with much friendlier locals.

The Ruben's is nice.

Our last time in London was 3 years ago when we attended a Queens Royal Garden Party.

Our favourite hotel is the Ritz where we stayed for 3 nights 5 years ago for our 33rd wedding anniversary.

Unfortunately I think the Baltic's and Norway will still be cruise free this summer but it is a popular destination so May-Sept 2021 should be possible.

Copenhagen is one of our favourite city's.The Admiral hotel where we stayed three times is in a great location.

I smoked for 5 years up to age 20.

Stopped 43 years ago.

I wrote down all the reasons why I should stop smoking.

My doctor was that impressed he used my action plan in a campaign to stop others smoking.

In Canada it is illegal to smoke indoors anywhere except on the native reservations where hey have their own rules and can allow it if they wish. Where I live all the casinos are non-smoking except the native-owned one. They had a non-smoking section but it was still bad so we didn't go there. Last year they did an about face and turned it into non-smoking and converted a smaller area completely separate from the main casino to the smoking casino. They did this because they realized many non-smokers were not going there because of the smoke but would go to the non-smoking casinos instead.

So few people smoke anymore so it makes sense that inside smoking will disappear. Just a matter of time and it can't some fast enough.

Thank you for this information.   I will make note of it for future travels.   I think we have reservations at the scandic palace in CPH as it looked like a good convenient location to tour the city.   Stay Safe! Debbie

How can one be a non smoker and smoke?  The company I retired from, changed medical insurance so that smokers paid more than non smokers. We had a lot of closet smokers.

I think you need a need a new Doctor. I don’t any Doctor that approves of smoking. I know a few. How did they look at your lungs?

Now I’m beginning to think you might just be a Troll. Husband with heart transplant and wife smokes. Doesn’t seem to be a good fit.
