get rid of smoking in the casino

No, they test the waters, like they've done in the past.  If it turns out more revenue for them, they will adopt the changes like Celebrity.

And until they see a significant change in the numbers one way or another they don't have a reason to test.

How will they ever know if revenue is up or down if they don't test?  There has been a significant change in the smoking population.  From almost  21 percent (2005)  down to 14 percent.  The number of smokers are getting smaller and smaller.

But how many of those 14 percent still cruise and gamble? That's the number that we don't have (and that Royal does). I know that whenever I have walked through a casino on any ship in the evening it is absolutely packed and the vast majority of the patrons seem to be smokers. If they ban smoking the likeliest result (in the near term) is a loss of customers to the competition who still allow smoking in their casino so they not only lose casino revenue but revenue across the board.

(14% of 3000 is 420, which is more than enough to fill a casino especially when there are many non-smokers who will still be gambling anyway.)

They will never know either way unless they actually test it on a ship.

You're assuming that all the people who smoke are also big gamblers.  Not always the case. Again, they will never know the added or loss of revenue without actually testing it on a ship.

A large portion of the smokers in the casino aren’t even gambling. They’re just sitting around smoking and hogging a machine that someone else might actually shovel money into if their smoldering butte wasn’t blocking it.

And you are assuming that there is a large percentage of non-smokers who would be more than happy to gamble but for the smoking (which isn't always the case, either). Royal has all of the data, they have made their decision based on said data and until that data shifts significantly we'll likely see no changes to the policy and no need for a test (in Royal's eyes, at least since neither of us control the question).

Again for the last time, they need to TEST to find out for sure, one way or the other.  You are making lots of assumptions yourself.

And again, they have the complete data and don't see the need for a test of any sort.

Not all smokers gamble, but most all of them use the casino as a smoking lounge...just enforcing that you must be actively gambling to be smoking would cut way down on the smoke in the casinos..IMHO, that's not asking too much.

At this point, I feel most on this thread are beating a dead horse, myself included...

Seeing the post just above mind, great minds think alike.  🙂

I think they did do a test. They made the Empress casino non-smoking. I don't know the test results.

The complaints as well as the reduced number of non-smoking gamblers will get their attention.

The issue is that there are plenty of people like me who never smoked and are willing to put up with the inconvenience for an hour or two. I grew up in the days where you could smoke anyplace so the smoking isn't the issue. It's the extra crowd of people who use it for a smoking lounge that's the problem. I think the biggest push back and complaints comes from the former smokers. These ships are so big I can't understand why they just can't make a larger casino with an enclosed smoking section. They don't seem to have a problem adding more water slides which don't bring in revenue.

Yes, that's a very good simple solution that would not break the bank.  Some NCL ships have completely closed off a section of the casino. Smokers should have their own bar as well so they don't have to come out for drinks reeking of smoke.

I honestly can’t stand smoking. But I love to gamble so I will deal. Kinda thinking this will be different on Freedom than Adventure. I am assuming the Casino will be a venue they let unvaccinated. That means masks for everyone unless eating or drinking. Doesn’t say anything about taking off to smoke? Either way I’m vaccinated and wearing a mask in the Casino. It might actually help with the horrible smoke smell!

Exactly the point I was going to make - if unvaxxed are allowed into the casino on US cruises, then they have to wear masks and perhaps even the vaxxed people. They would have to remove the mask to smoke.  I know how Vegas handled it - if you were smoking, they did not enforce the mask requirement, so people smoked a lot, and drank booze when not actively puffing.  So the mask was around their chin for hours on end.  It will be interesting to see what the new protocols will look like on Freedom etc.

I think it could be said that we are both doing that. But at the end of the day it's Royal's ball and they can do with it as they will.

I think it's fair to say we can both agree that at the end of the day it's Royal's decision and they will do as they please in order to maximize profits.

Some of the ships had a policy of half of the casino for smoking and the other half non-smoking.  Unfortunately, they couldn't train the smoke to stay on the appropriate side.  It's kind of like a no-peeing section in a pool.

We also appreciate Celebrity's policy, but we like some of the itineraries and ships on Royal so we tend to split between them.  I'm hoping the new jazzed up filtration systems they supposedly put in for COVID relief will help with the smoke as well.  Sometimes it gets really bad on parts of the Promenades where the stairs come up.

I remember smoking on an airplane. Remember those little ashtrays built into the arm rests of your chair. LOL
