Yikes! Thanks for the link to the color code.  Initially I though yellow was “less” than orange but I read the CDC’s description and that’s not the case: it’s green, orange, yellow then red.   FYI, now that I’ve seen this I’m getting nervous that my July 24th cruise on the Horizon might not take place !

Heck, I’m getting worried about going this Sunday. Let’s hope things are good. Couple of vlogs I’ve been watching make no mention of anything going on, so who knows.

I've been reading on https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/cruise/management/technical-instructions-for-cruise-ships.html which has more details.  Again, probably unenforcible in Florida after July 18, but that doesn't necessarily mean cruise lines are going to immediately stop participating in the "Enhanced Data Collection" of test data from cruise ships passengers and crew, and from local/state health authorities for the cases detected within 5 days after a cruise.

Horizon must've had 3+ cases (during/after the cruise) to switch to Yellow status from one or both of its first two sailings.

Definition of a COVID-19 Case for the Purpose of Ship’s Color Status

  • A positive viral test result for COVID-19 in any traveler (passenger or crew member)
  • COVID-19-like illness in any traveler (passenger or crew member) with:
    • a negative or repeatedly inconclusive/invalid test result (i.e., never able to register a positive or negative result) for COVID-19 and with no other laboratory-confirmed respiratory pathogens (e.g., influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, Legionella, Streptococcal pharyngitis), or
    • an unavailable test result (e.g., traveler refuses to be tested, testing resources unavailable onboard).
  • The following persons are not included when determining a ship’s color status:
    • passengers who test positive on day of embarkation who do not board the ship, or
    • newly embarking crew members who test positive during quarantine.

Green Ship Criteria

  • No reports of COVID-19 or COVID-19-like illness (CLI) for 7 days, as determined by a qualified medical professional, and
  • On-time (by 1200 ET) daily submission of EDC form during past 7 days.

Orange Ship Criteria

  • COVID-19 or CLI has been reported in the past 7 days, and the ship is below CDC’s investigation threshold:
    • Restricted Voyages:
      • Cases reported in less than 0.10% of passengers (e.g., if 6500* passengers are on board, it would take at least 7 passenger-cases during the previous 7 days to meet CDC’s investigation threshold), and
      • No crew cases reported.
    • Simulated Voyages:
      • Cases reported in less than 1.5% of passengers, and
      • Cases reported in less than 1.0% of crew.
    • Ships with Crew Only (i.e., not yet submitted requests for simulated voyages or applications for restricted voyages, pending CDC approval, or sailing at a later date).
      • Cases reported in less than 1.0% of crew.

Yellow Ship Criteria

  • Ship is at or above CDC’s investigation threshold:
    • Restricted Voyages:
      • Cases reported in 0.10% or more of passengers (e.g., if 6500* passengers on board, CDC’s investigation threshold is met if there are 7 or more cases among passengers occurring during the previous 7 days), or
        • This percentage includes passenger cases occurring within 5 days of disembarkation that CDC was notified of by state or local health departments.
      • One or more cases reported in crew.
    • Simulated Voyages:
      • Cases reported in 1.5% or more of passengers, or
      • Cases reported in 1.0% or more of crew.
    • Ships with Crew Only (i.e., not yet submitted requests for simulated voyages or applications for restricted voyages, pending CDC approval, or sailing at a later date).
      • Cases reported in 1.0% or more of crew.
    • OR
  • During the past 7 days, the ship failed to submit one or more daily EDC submissions on time (by 1200 ET). On a weekly basis, CDC emails all ships a reminder to submit the EDC form. In addition, CDC sends a reminder email if a ship does not submit their EDC form.

*The largest cruise ships can carry up to 6500 passengers on board.

Red Ship Criteria

  • For a ship to be considered at Red status, the ship has:
    • sustained transmission of COVID-19 or CLI, or
    • potential for COVID-19 cases to overwhelm on board medical center resources.
  • In addition, CDC will work closely with the cruise line and consider multiple factors before assigning a “Red” status to the ship. These factors may include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Percent of passengers and crew on board who are fully vaccinated.
    • Variants of concern are identified among cases on board.
    • Epidemiologic data from EDC reporting (e.g., symptomatic persons on board requiring medical care)
    • Epidemiologic links between cases.
    • Number of hospital beds, ventilators, oxygen, and other medical supplies on board relative to the number of cases on board.
    • Ship has not replied to CDC’s request for information within 48 hours.
    • During the past 7 days, the ship missed one or more daily submissions of the EDC form. On a weekly basis, CDC emails all ships a reminder to submit the EDC form. In addition, CDC sends a reminder email if a ship does not submit their EDC form.

Not necessarily.  It could be that they didn't report their numbers in time.

I wouldn't worry about a few people. The "threshold" for canceled cruises and suspended operations is much higher than that. They would have to have like 150 people or something like that. That won't happen running vaccinated cruises. Well, unless a variant eventually renders the vaccine useless. Luckily, that's not the case with this Delta variant. Vaccines are still very effective. The only problem might be port countries closing borders or restricting visitors. That would suck but hopefully not equal a shutdown. I wouldn't worry, you're cruise is soon and your going to have a blast! Worry when you get back..lol.

I wish there was more disclosure about the ship color status.  If there are cases detected during/after a cruise on a particular ship or just a late/missing submission of EDC form, it should be published somewhere.  A few cases won't bother me, but I'd like to know if there were numbers and what they were so I can evaluate the risk.  I understand why that'd be bothersome for the cruise industry with scary numbers eroding confidence, but if they keep those numbers low and outcomes good, they'll make the case that cruising can be done safely.

we are more likely staying on the Horizon during out DR stops and cancelling our excursion.  We only booked Amber Cove, but maybe in our best interest.  We booked this curios due to Curacao and Aruba and days at sea.

So that's the way it was on  July 16th 202. God bless you Walter!

I agree.  My cruise is August 21st.  I hope things don't go crazy before my cruise happens.  So far, so good with cruises lately.

Neither is this. Carnival shut down from the mid ship elevators to the forward elevators on Tuesday and it has remained closed.  I was told by mutiple crew members that it was done because of CDC protocols.   This is right outside my cabin so I have had mutiple opportunities to speak with crew members and someone who's cabin was in the closed area. They moved his luggage to another cabin without telling him.

See posts 2 and 3 (current cruise  and 7/4 cruise). Maybe that is why it is yellow.

What CDC protocols? Like a covid positive passenger? Seems a bit extreme to shut down for hours and hours.

No one has answered those questions in the 3 days since they closed it off.

Just a little inconvenient for us to get to the dining room but at least we didn't have to change cabins.

What deck is this on?  So they have evacuated everyone in that area to other cabins on the ship?

I was under the impression they were keeping most or all of deck 2 unoccupied to use if needed for quarantining (I had heard people on 2 had been upgraded to 6).

Yes. I am on deck 2 on the port side and they didn't hold anything on this side. We were walking down to the aft and then taking the stairs to 3 for dining. There were door decorations all the way through that section.

I have only talked with one person from that area and they moved him out of there.

Is the door locked?  Can you take a peek inside?

If I had to venture a guess, and this is only my speculation, that these strange procedures are Carnival enacting their Covid and quarantine protocols. They put the luggage out so they could move them and the occupants to a "safe cabin" in the "quarantine zone" of the ship. Plus to disinfectant them, I would guess. That was a CDC stipulation and requirement for cruise lines, IIRC.

So your steward or other crew you've seen on your deck haven't mentioned the number of possible people who have tested positive?  I'm guessing they are not allowed to discuss though...I hope you enjoy the rest of your cruise.
