Marco Polo airport to Venice.

There’s a bus that goes directly from airport to Venice. Getting to Ravenna is a bit tougher.

We took the ATVO Express bus!  It was cheap and so easy!  The bus delivered us to Piazzale Roma which was right where our hotel was located.

Advice please. How is the best way to get from Marco Polo airport to Venice City?

Where in Venice do you need to go?  The above mentioned buses (or land taxis) can easily get you to the transportation hub at Piazzale Roma.  But that’s as far on to the islands of Venice that you can go using wheeled transportation.  If you are headed to a hotel near there, you may be fine.  But if you need to go elsewhere in the city, you will need to transfer to a public boat bus (called a vaporetto) or a private water taxi.  You could also take a private water taxi or public boat bus from the airport.

Best method depends on where you need to go and how much you’re willing to spend.  It also depends on how many of you and your ability to handle your luggage.  Venice is filled with pedestrian bridges that go up and over canals.

Train goes from Mestre to the island.  Better arriving on train than coping with the bus terminal.  If your intention is to go straight from the airport to the ship, and have enough time for sightseeing, take the Alilaguna water transit.  27 euro for round trip and 3 euro for each bag after the first.  Round trip is valid for 30 days.  Blue line is more scenic than the yellow.  It's two hours from airport to cruise terminal.

Yeah, the bus is the ticket to get to Piazzale Roma, it is very inexpensive then if your hotel is near on the Grand Canal you can lug your luggage over a few bridges, if not you can then buy tickets on the Vaporetto which is like a water bus that will take you to close to your hotel, where you can again lug your luggage over a few bridges.  My best advice is travel light.  😅

Yes, very easy. We got our ATVO tickets online...printed the receipt/ticket...walked outside the Marco Polo airport, showed our ticket, they pointed us to the bus. The bus driver then instructed us to place our luggages underneath the bus. We got on, waited a few minutes for other passengers, then it was a quick ride to Piazzale Roma.......all that without speaking Italian.

Our hotel was only a short walk from P. Roma, 2 short bridges, located across the Grand Canal from the main train station. The next day, we took the people mover from Piazzale Roma to the cruise terminal.

The only way to arrive in Venice is by boat. Take the Alilaguna Blu and enjoy the ride via Murano and the Lido before arriving in St Marks Sq……

….however, this all depends on where you are trying to get to in Venice; as the ships actually sail from Ravenna which is no where near Venice 🤷‍♀️

The last time we sailed from Venice I pre booked a Water Taxi and it was about 300 metres walk from the airport terminal to the water taxi.

On other occasions we have got into a regular taxi to the main hub of Piazzale Roma and stayed in a nearby hotel or got onto the People mover(Train) to the cruise terminal a short distance away.

Now Venice has banned cruise ships over 25,000 tons you will have to go to Ravenna which can take up to 4 hours by coach because of volume of traffic and road conditions.

We've booked a hotel near St. Marco. Preferred the Alilaguna Blu, since from the San Zaccaria stop to the hotel we didn't have to cross any bridges or climb any steps (Hotel Fontana).

There are porters on this line to help you with your baggage.

We stayed in Venice for 2 nights pre cruise, and then boarded again the Alilaguna Blu to the cruise terminal (when the cruises still sailed from Venice, that is...)

Dani, you and LB planned your trip much better than I did.  Although being cheap, staying in St Marks was never a great option for me. 😉

It was the 1st time in our many visits to Venice (for which we're very fortunate), that we stayed 2 nights IN the city. 2 days pre-cruise to remember.

It was so worth it. Imagine waking up in the morning, Venice is quiet, only the Venetians up and about, really feeling the city. Same thing early evening, when all the cruise ships and the day trippers left.

We went to Rialto Market with all the locals.

The hotel was 3*, 150 Euro incl. b'fast per night (2014).

[We always stayed in Mestre (land trips with a rented car), and schlepped ourselves with the train back and forth, morning and evening.... It was a drag.]

As posted previously, the "best" method depends on where you need to go, budget, mobility, and amount of luggage.  So you;ll need to provide a bit more info, esp ... the location of your hotel.

All land travel in Venice ends at Piazzzale Roma. This is where taxis, buses, cars must drop of their passengers.  There are a few hotels right on the PRoma.  So if you have too much luggage to easily manage, the easiest option would be to stay by PRoma and have a taxi drop you off at your hotel. A taxi will be about 40-45E for the 20 minute ride.  If you can manage to walk a couple of blocks and cross one small bridge, there are a few more options available.

I thought RCI ships were departing from Ravenna and provided a shuttle bus from the airport.  So will you return to the airport for the shuttle or will you make your own way to Ravenna from Venice ?

Thanks for the Hotel Fontana recommendation.  Looks like a great place!  Just booked it for next year.  If you have dining suggestions near there, please feel free to share as well!

Awesome.

When we were there (and we also sent there family and friends), they made a 10% reduction if you paid cash. Since we pay a lot of commissions in Israel when using foreign currency by cc, worked excellent for us, as we usually travel with some cash....

If you travel by Alilaguna Blu (highly recommended since you get a nice view of Venice by the water), there is no bridge and no stairs from the San Zaccaria stop, just 3 mins easy walk.

We ate at an restaurant just opposite the hotel entrance, pizza. It was OK (pic below). We found that almost all restaurants around St. Marco are tourist traps, so we just eat "something" to get by....

OTOH, we splurged for an excellent chestnut ice cream at Caffe Florian in the Square, for people watching. Worth doing it at least once 😁

That pizza looks awesome!  And nice that is so close to hotel!

We do plan on using Alilaguna Blu....is it best to book in advance to just buy tickets at the airport upon arrival?

And a definite YES on the ice cream!  I assume you mean once a day!!

We prefer to use cash, so no booking in advance. There was absolutely no queue to buy the tickets when we landed, and no problem to board the next vaporetto.

I'm always vary of flight delays.... even pre-Covid.

Always books refundable too... I guess it stems also from living in a "volatile" place.

Ice cream - yes....

Go outside the airport and yell “Marco.” You should hear somebody say “Polo.” Go in the direction of that voice. Repeat.

I am not US resident so I do not play that game...thank goodness
