The ship has to sail through a narrow passage between the reefs to get to the Dockyard, you have sail in from St. George on the otherside of the island. You cannot just straight in from any other direction, shallow reef everywhere around Bermuda. As per anchoring, once in the Dockyard they would just go straight to the pier... The ship is too large for St. George, it cannot make the narrow passage and Hamilton is beyond the Dockyard and also again, the ship is too big.
Rare mking8288 Posted October 29, 2021 #79 Share Posted October 29, 2021 (edited) Will continue to follow and watch - (BA continues to run her donut loops SE of St. George, approx. 50 mi from land) really hoping that folks get a chance tomorrow to at least dock for a few hours, walk around Dockyard a little bit and stretch those sea legs. Sunrise is 7:33 am local time and once the pilot is able to come onboard, conditions favorable to dock - usually take about an hour to navigate thru the narrow & shallow channels with reefs on both side thru to the cruise pier. Excerpts from BWS: maritime forecast & conditions improving overnight and perhaps ... fingers crossed - Friday In: 1-3ft (seas inside the reef) Out: 7-11ft (seas outside the reef) Winds west-northwesterly 10 to 15 knots, easing 8 to 12 knots in the afternoon, becoming variable 3 to 5 knots for a time in the evening, then settling south-southwesterly 5 to 8 knots overnight... Seas inside the reef 1 to 3 ft... Outside the reef 7 to 11 ft, decreasing during the night inside the reef 1 to 3 ft... Outside the reef 6 to 9 ft... Sunrise: 7:33 am; Sunset: 6:31 pm. Tidal charts/tables published as given - Times (local) and heights of high and low waters (time| meters / feet). 1 meter = 3.28 feet. I figured there was probably some issues with tendering and appreciate your explanation.
fred30 Posted October 29, 2021 #89 Share Posted October 29, 2021 (edited) These photos were taken years ago from our deck 10 balcony leaving Bermuda. The white channel marker is just at the edge of the reef. This shows how tight the channel is in spots. No room for error. In heavy winds the ship would easily be pushed into a reef.
