No more smoking in casinos, other updates

I was actually looking forward to the smokeless casino on the Symphony as we have OBC to burn but not now.  It's the reason we and I suspect others dont go.  Im a former smoker.  Quit 11 years ago when I watched my FIL die struggling from lung cancer screaming from pain and drugged on morphine.  I spent one day relieving my MIL and went home and threw out cigarettes.  I know it's addictive and I sympathize with those who can't quit.  But I can't know what those years did to my lungs and I dont want any smoke either from me or 2nd hand getting in.

Here we go again.  The problem is not the gamblers who are smoking but ALL the other non-gamblers who simply come to the casino to smoke.    In all fairness, the compass does note the casino as an approved smoking area  so I don't fault the smokers.  Because it is the only  indoor smoking area, it can be packed with smokers.  Evenings after diner, or after a show , are the worse times.

Just in case you didn't know, you can get that OBC back as cash. No need to burn it. Cash it out in the casino at a less smoky time of day.

Australia has the same non-smoking rules and they are number 2 in the world at per capita gambling revenue and 80% of the population gambles (Source: casino dot org). 32% of the UK population gambles. That's actual sourced data, not just blowing smoke. (US statistics are much more complex due to the wide range of restrictions from Nevada, New Jersey and New York to Hawai'i and Utah).

Australia also has only about 22 million people living in the whole country. So those skewed facts mean nothing.

This is such sad news. At least I am going on a cruise this summer out of Southampton. No smoking in casinos on cruises leaving from the UK!

Yeap, I'm glad that our two cruises this year are Celebrity in Europe and Anthem from the UK.

You can't smoke in nightclubs and casinos in the UK, but I'm sure they make plenty of money as I'm sure Celebrity make money from their smokeless casinos.

This is EXACTLY the problem.  The casino has become the de facto smoking lounge.  I have seen ship officers hanging out at the casino bar for hours smoking and not gambling.  How hard can the rule that you must be gambling to be smoking?

Gambling has nothing to to with my comment about when the casino is shut down. I already told you what we do when the casino is open for business. Why not answer the question concerning how you would feel personally if the casinos were shut down to smokers when the casino wasn't open for gambling. But then again you really don't need to answer that if I read between the lines from this post. Because I have the right to voice my opinion on this forum as well as to RC. There are a lot of positives cruising with RC that keep us coming back and to the RCG.

I have wondered many times why a non smoker would care who is smoking in the casino, when the casino is not open. It's not like they can be in there gambling anyway?

I find it very hard to believe that the 14% of people over 18 who smoke in the US, spend more in the casino than the 86% of passengers that don't smoke.  The ships are not running on full capacity and there are people who didn't know the casinos were non-smoking for a brief period.  Any revenue analysis during this time period would not be accurate, IMO.  One thing is for sure, on some ships the covid spread originated in the casino.

I don't find it hard to believe at all. Regardless of any guesses by you or me... clearly Royal believes they make more money with smokers in the casino. I have been on 14 cruises since the restart and was smoking on 10 of them, (Started Chantix, and not smoking anymore.. for now. Fingers crossed this time it takes) The 11th cruise smoking was still permitted, but the 12th, 13th, and 14th were not. Those last three it was heaven in the casino because I could get any machine I wanted, any time.

It does not apply to everyone. I am masters, and I was in the Odyssey casino smoking while not playing several times for whatever reason. The host, who made a point to say hello to me any time I was there, is not going to bother with someone they know gambles a lot, but is just not gambling at the moment.

Speaking for myself, it's the stench that flows out into the surrounding venues. The smokers are not at fault. RC is.

Good luck with kicking the habit. I really do mean that. What helped me quit smoking was something I saw and I didn't want that to be me. I did it cold turkey with not help from any products. I also quit for myself and not for anyone else.

Because Royal has decreed it as such. As stated earlier, it's on the ship map that it is a smoking area. Quite often I stop by for 5 min after dinner to have a quick smoke and will continue to do so.

Yeah I watched my Mother die young of lung cancer. (luckily no suffering, but way too young.. 56) I have not enjoyed smoking for a while, but needed the help with kicking it. I kicked it twice with Chantix, but I have a serious problem with handling emotional stress. (Death of my dog) and convincing myself I could just have 1 and it would be fine. It clearly wasn't fine. So now I understand all my triggers, and where I am weak. Thanks for the well wishes.

I enjoyed smoking. I quit over 31 years ago. Something I know about myself, I'm only one cigarette away from being a smoker again. IMO, that's a great thing to know about myself. My will not to smoke is greater than my desire or craving to smoke. Patting myself on the back.  Hang tough, you can do it. The rewards are well worth it. I'll now step off my soapbox.
