A Fractured LIVE - Fractured My Ankle on Carnival Spirit - In hospital in Cartagena

Plans, my cruise, and my LIVE! have gone awry.

I dislocated and badly fractured my ankle after tripping on the steps to the gangway this morning.

Dramatic fall, and unfortunately for me, dramatic scary dislocation.

I am at the hospital in Cartagena.  I am awaiting the specialist.  Have been given pain medication.

If you have ever wanted to know what happens in this situation you will now find out in my Fractured LIVE!

In the bright side I have Allianz travel insurance.  And working internet (gotta keep it light)

Of course I’m devastated that my trip is over.  Just devastated.

More to follow after my ankle is put back in place.

Oh no!!

Is the spirit 😉 of keeping it light ... at least you didn't gain 10 pounds and you didn't get a chance to be bored from the back to back sea days from Cabo to Seattle.

In all seriousness, I hope you are ok.

Thank you for keeping us up to date on your experience!  SO very sorry this has happened to you, and that your trip will come to an end.  I enjoyed reading your commentary about one of my "bucket list" cruises.  God bless you.

Ok just waiting for surgery now.

Need distraction so here’s another post.

They have let husband wait with me.

Very difficult to not speak Spanish.  Using lots of Google translate

Carnival gave us their local contact person to help— he has been very helpful—dealing with Immigration, helping with hotel, luggage etc

Had the Option to go home and have surgery but the ankle is so busted we all agreed that is a bad idea.  Good medical system here

Lucky I did not eat breakfast this morning and only had 3 sips of coffee since plans were to have coffee in Columbia after disembarkation.

This would have been much worse if happened in 1st of 4 sea days. So there’s that,

Well I’ve finally visited my 6th continent.  Just Not how J planned to do it. Thank you so much for all the well wishes.  I will make sure you get full details later on my medical center visit on the ship, how we disembarked, the insurance—all of it.

OMG waiting is the worse part.  Husband is off somewhere signing papers?  Talking to Doctor?  Don’t know.

Glad they have let me keep phone so far.

my poor mangled ankle.  I knew it was bad right after when medical said DON’T Look but too late I already had.  Hubby took a photo while we were waiting earlier—maybe eventually with enough warning for the medically squeamish (which J am)  I’ll post it.

Sorry for the disjointed thoughts—all I can manage on the pain meds.

I broke the ankle right around 7:30.  It’s now almost 2pm—took about 2 hours to get moved to Medical  on the Spirit, consult  TV with them arrange debarkation and get medical transport, One of longest days of my life.

We had a perfect evening on the ship last night.  Glad to I have that memor

On the bright side I don’t have COVID! Got swabbed at Spirit Med Center and at the hospital.

Walking (ok, maybe not walking right now) , talking poster child for travel insurance...it can happen to anyone at any time (for all those people that think its only for those that have preexisting conditions).  Also, hopefully you have a passport...so if you wanted to take the option home it would not have been an issue at all.  Good luck with your surgery and keep us updated when you can.

Quick question, did the hospital require payment up front and did your insurance cover the upfront payment if required?  We always look for primary payment with the upfront cost to the hospital to be included just in case.

My husband just had to pay $10,000 up front (we are hoping that is the whiplike cost but due to language barrier not sure). Thank God we have high l  I’m mit credit cards.  Also hzve our passports.

Have your DH check to see if Allianz has the pay upfront cost clause, we have used them quite often for our insurance and we see that clause in their policies.  From what we understand, that is standard in most of the Caribbean islands and why we make sure it is covered in our travel insurance, one less thing to worry about I guess.   Passport always a good idea, especially in emergency situation...

Thank you for sharing your horror story TravelBluebird. I know how difficult it is for you. And sharing that you have travel insurance is a strong reinforcement to get it. No one can foresee the future. Please keep us posted and praying for a full recovery. 🙏
