If you search, there are several threads on this exact topic over the last few months/years.   And, they never end well.

Geez people! Sometimes the search function doesn’t always work. She has been a member since 2005 with only 444 posts so she doesn’t live on here like some of us do. I’m guessing she has never come across the posts about this or she wouldn’t have asked.

Oh relax…..it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to find a topic in the first few pages of threads.

I have had wait staff tell me to come in shorts.  I have told them we will not be there on formal night and every time they say “please come”!  I’ll tell them I don’t have formal wear (only nice slacks and nice short) and they have said please come.  On our last cruise, I told them I only brought shorts and they said, “doesn’t matter!  It’s really okay to come!”

If anyone gives stink eye that’s on them.  I personally have not worn shorts to formal nights, but I have seen others that did and no one seems to care.  I’m sure there are one or two giving a stink eye, but definitely not the wait staff.

I was going to stay out of this, but I might as well jump in and add my hay penny's worth (with inflation that's all my $0.02 is worth now)...

Personally, when I go to dinner on a cruise ship, I'll have showered and be wearing nothing less casual than khakis and a golf or button-down shirt.  On the "formal" or "dress your best" nights, I'll probably wear a sport coat.  I do this for me as i enjoy these dinners as something of an event.  If you want to wear shorts, please feel free to do so.  It won't bother me.

What's the temperature like onboard at night (summer, Caribbean, Oasis)? If I'm dressing for Bahamas weather, I might pack shorts with nicer tops. But if the air-conditioning is cranked up and it's otherwise windy out on the high seas I might pack my "office clothes," which would consist of blouses and dress pants. I'll pack a couple of dresses for formal nights. But I don't have a lot of dresses (that fit me anymore). I guess I'll pack a mix of clothes, and if it's a hot night, get ready to see my be-shorted legs in the MDR!

I am also a long-time but infrequent member who only comes around when I have a cruise planned. So 12 or 6 years ago on my previous cruises that brought me to CC, I wouldn't have dared to wear shorts in the MDR! These types of frequent topic discussions/debates help to frame the current sentiment at least among a sect of the population, of mostly diehard cruisers. Despite the objections from the purists who expect cruising to be the exact same experience they had 30 to 60 years ago when they started cruising, it seems that the general consensus is that shorts are fine for most nights. We'll definitely pack something dressier for formal nights, though, but other nights might be a mix of nicer tops with shorts or pants.

Wait staff want their tips lol.

In the days when the rule was enforced, it wasn't the wait staff who did it.  It was management, as in maitre'd.

There is no dress code, this is the point

It does say "shorts are welcome at breakfast and lunch".  People interpret that many ways, but the way I learned reading comprehension, it means they're not welcome at dinner, but not my job to enforce.  I personally think RCI backed off because their staff was getting verbally attacked by some when asked to change and they got tired of dealing with them.

As someone who pretty much only cruises the Caribbean in the Summer, I am generally comfortable in either pants or shorts with a short sleeve shirt at night.

I don't see that verbiage any longer on their web site

Casual: You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch.

It is the first answer under the link you listed.

The cruise compass should list the type of suggested attire for each night of the cruise. Notice the "suggested". RCL is attempting to maintain what they consider "a fine dining" atmosphere for their MDR in the evenings, hence they would prefer you not to wear shorts. Although I still pack a suit for "dress your best nights" (this verbiage seems to have replaced the old formal night, at least for the Caribbean),  I usually drive to the ports, so luggage not so much an issue. The last 3 Caribbean  have been on (2 RCL, 1 Hal) since the restart, it was quite warm in most venues on the ship. The suit never stayed on past dinner (my daughter likes to dress up, so I go with the flow). I can relate to those (especially who fly) who do not wish to pack or wear formal wear. I am just as comfortable in slacks (or more so since I tend to get cold easy) as shorts, so my typical MDR outfit is slacks and a long sleeve shirt. Daywear shorts and a golf shirt or short sleeve button down. Although I am not a fan of shorts at night in the MDR, it doesn't bother me what others wear.

HMM, some how I just glossed right over that. thanks for pointing it out.

I stand corrected..

Regardless, I don't pack long pants on a Caribbean itinerary, and eat dinners in the MDR and Specialty Restaurants without and second glances.

Exactly!  I have been Loyal to Royal since 2000 and I just joined cruise critic last year.  Posting isn’t my thing.

Clothing doesn't have to "welcomed" to be "permitted".

Still no need to tell someone to search for it themselves. Either answer the question or move on.

Sounds like a perfect day to me. Except before heading to the casino, I  would lay out few towels to reserve several poolside loungers for the next day for when I roll out of bed at 1 pm. Which reminds me to get extra towels to hold a few empty "buffer" chairs to use as tables and to make sure there aren't people sitting too close to me.

Don't forget to reserve chairs in both the sun and the shade. You never know what your mood might be.
