Two Wheels Only Posted May 8 #2 Share Posted May 8 I just love how the article shows a cruise ship from a completely different cruise line. Imagine an article about a stolen Dodge Charger but the photo shows a Toyota Camry. 2
Rare Laszlo Posted May 8 #3 Share Posted May 8 Crazy stuff can happen anywhere. Hopefully everyone is OK at the end of the day. I wonder if the woman passenger will get a free cruise. 2
Rare JIMESOPUS Posted May 8 #4 Share Posted May 8 It makes me wonder, with all the new ships out there, how well are all the cruise lines vetting new crew members? On our last cruise, we had a cabin steward who was just hired and wanted out after several weeks aboard a ship.
schmoopie17 Posted May 8 #5 Share Posted May 8 This is shocking! "Rock, Paper, Scissors" usually doesn't result in violence.
Rare BostonGal35 Posted May 8 #6 Share Posted May 8 people forget that cruise ships are the size of a small city/large town. crime can happen anywhere, just like medical issues, freak accidents, etc. if it can happen on land, it can happen at sea.
Rare www3traveler Posted May 8 #7 Share Posted May 8 I was just saying to a cruise friend that being a crew member takes a very special type of person. Over the years, I have seen so many crew members not surviving the first few weeks of a contract.

Probably 25-30% of new hires either don't complete their first contract, or never come back after the first contract. No way to "vett" somebody as to whether they are compatible with shipboard life.
david_sobe Posted May 8 #9 Share Posted May 8 (edited) Cruise ship workers are no different than the rest of the population including us here on CC. They are not immune from criminal behavior like everyone else. I live in Miami and cruise ship workers are always in the news for something happening on board. I still would say they are better than the general population and would feel safer with them then the general population. There was a cruise ship worker (not NCL) recently that hid in the cabins of women when they showered. He hid under the bed. Pretty scary stuff. But these kind of perverts sadly are everywhere including police, politicians, teachers, and cruise ship workers. etc. Edited May 8 by david_sobe
LatinaInTexas Posted May 8 #10 Share Posted May 8 Sad to hear this. Will be on the Encore in 11 days and hoping it will be business as usual and it will be a great cruise!
Ellis1138 Posted May 8 #11 Share Posted May 8 I just hope my mother doesn't see this article, since I'll be on the Encore in December. But yeah, anything can happen anywhere, no matter how safe a place seems.

I'm not sure if I could do that job and be away from my family for so long.

I'm not sure if I could do that job and be away from my family for so long. Its tough work. I read an article once that said a disproportionate amount of cruise line suicides (jumping from the ship) are photographers. There is lots of pressure on them to sell photos and take as many photos as possible. It just put a seed in my head to never be rude to a photographer no matter how pushy they may seem. Its long hours, away from home, and very isolated living in small quarters. Its a little like the military where some small minority very desperate people join just to survive.

Horrific, and I feel terrible for that passenger and her family/friends who were likely traveling with her as well. Yes, depending upon the extent of her injuries (which sound bad), this will end in serious litigation, no doubt.

Do they need to wait for the next turn-around port to get off, or they can get off at any upcoming port? Before getting to the port where they can get off, are they then charged the room & board for those days they don't work? If it happens to be a long cruise, that could be many days from the time they said they quit.

If it happens to be a long cruise, that could be many days from the time they said they quit. They can get off at any port they want to, subject to local immigration, though with crew that's normally not a problem. Some places, like the US, a crew member getting off the ship (whether quit or end of contract) has to be escorted from the ship to the airport by a bonded ship's agent. Yes, if they are not working while onboard, they get charged room and board. So, you can "quit" but keep working to keep getting paid until you get to port. 4
