Straws

Haven't been on a cruise in six years. I've heard straws are no longer provided. Any exceptions to this for example with frozen drinks?

They are available at most bars and restaurants. The only change is they will not provide one unless you request one.

We were offered paper straws and my grandson went through a bunch of them as they got soggy at the tip :o

They'll be phasing out all plastic straws by the end of 2018. Paper straws will be an alternative. If you really want a straw I'd recommend bringing your own, you can find packs of four stainless steel straws with a cleaning brush for about $10.

By 2020 Royal Caribbean plans to do away with all single use plastics.

"The cruise line also plans to remove other plastic items, such as bags, cups and condiment packets, at the start of 2019. Officials plan to complete the plastic audit by 2020."

I think if you look just a second to look at the amount of GARBAGE in our ocean, you'd know that this is a WORLDWIDE problem...

Glad RCI is trying to do their part to save the planet!! We all need to live here!

I have no issue packing a reusable straw. I just wondered what the status was.

I'm bringing my own, I need a straw for sodas and my Bloody Mary's.

The straws used on ships don't end up in the ocean. Almost all garbage in the seas come from just a few countries. RCI is not saving the planet, they try to sell cruises.

Earlier this evening our local tv news station had a segment about straws . They said that there will be plastic straws on hand if people desire them. I assume it applies only to the county I reside in.

It's just s small step but proud of RCI, It's so sad to see the marine life killed (sea turtles with the straws up their noses) by our plastic waste.

Not sure you know Royal's Infamous Environmental record including record fines at the time. 20yrs ago they were busted using fake pipes and pipe diagrams to dispose directly into Ocean of their Photo Chemicals and dumping oil waste close to the coast. To help their bad image they started "Save the Waves" campaign... Now in 2016 Carnival/Princess was fined $40 million doing same thing, using a secret "Magic Pipe" to dump oils in the Ocean's.. Hope they all learned their lesson and I'm for all improvements in Waste Management...

I was on NCL last month and there wasn’t a single straw on the ship, not even paper. I brought my own. Not a problem at all. I drink out of a stainless steel straw literally every day and have been using the same one for about 2 years. A disposable straw is as much of a waste as a plastic grocery bag. Paper is also a waste but at least paper is easily recyclable.

The pollution these ships dump into our ocean is a disgrace and as a result I didn’t use to cruise. Now as I understand it, the waste that is dumped from the newer ships is a lot less harmful than the older RCL ships due to advancements in treatment procedures. But while in the middle of the ocean, who knows what they are really doing. I hate to think about it.

We used to pick up long straws before a cruise because the std straw didn't work with the coke cup. Now the straws are longer, but we don't get coke pkg anymore.

I just want a swivel stick with my drink.

I’m glad to hear that they are cracking down more on the use of plastic straws.

I’ve become addicted to my stainless steel straws! Maybe I’ll bring a pack onboard with me.

Yeah they don’t work so well. Before I bought my stainless steel straws, I tried to use paper with my breakfast smoothies. All I can say is you better drink fast because they do start to disintegrate eventually.

Pretty much everything we talk about on these boards are just that. What do you expect on a site dealing with billion dollar cruise ships and the people who spend thousands of dollars to sail on them?.

What irks me is when big business uses the "Saving The Environment" clause when they are really just saving the bottom line. Cruising is far from being an "Environmental Friendly" vacation. If they were serious about the environment than they would be serving in paper cups to match the paper straws.

Or they would stop sending all those inserts with the Compass, like Park West, casino, etc.
