An American cruise ship passenger was arrested in Bermuda Tuesday morning after she was caught with marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

According to The Royal Gazette, 41-year-old Pennsylvania native Meghan George was searched Monday night by customs officials as she prepared to board the Anthem of the Seas at the island’s dockyard.

The passenger pleaded guilty to four counts of drug possession and apologized to the court. Bermuda Magistrate Juan Wolffe ordered her to pay the fine before she left the island. (Royal Caribbean International)

Authorities then searched her cabin and discovered three marijuana pipes, a grinder and an electronic cigarette cartridge holding cannabis oil. Local police on the island arrested the woman and fined her $4,000 for possession.

George’s defense lawyer Bruce Swan said the American traveler placed the drugs and paraphernalia in her bags “without thought” and didn’t realize they were there until she was in Bermuda.

Few years back we were coming back to ship at Caribbean port (Jamaica?) where there was a commotion after drug sniffing dog targeted teen age American boy. Parents were screaming at son who had bought pot from local. Later heard son was dragged off in handcuffs and entire family forced to disembark. Compared to punishment awaiting him at home Jamaican jail might seem attractive.

It's been reported/repeated here that you don't want to get arrested in a lot of ports for posession. They are not always as easy as the US is especially when it comes to small amounts. In a lot of places it's not treated as a misdemeanor. But, I'm guessing his parents wrath probably would be something to consider. Cruisers have been arrested in the Bahamas, Jamaica, etc over the years and it's not a pleasant experience. Best case is you get put on a plane back home after paying a hefty fine. The best thing to do is just don't.

Of course some of us will never forget the fake bottom can thread from a couple of years ago. Some people are just amazingly stupid.
