ccdaniel2707 Posted October 8, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 8, 2014 My husband and I are sailing to the Western Caribbean on 10/18. I have read that there are mosquitos coming out of the woodwork over there. What is the best kind of bug spray to use that really works?
KenMo Posted October 8, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 8, 2014 Something with DEET in it.
ChicoCA Posted October 8, 2014 #3 Share Posted October 8, 2014 Also, be sure to apply the bug spray OVER the top of the sunscreen.
cb at sea Posted October 8, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 8, 2014 Never needed it in the middle of the day.
Ashland Posted October 8, 2014 #5 Share Posted October 8, 2014 I wouldn't use "spray" try the OFF brand individual wrapped towelettes..
Treven Posted October 8, 2014 #6 Share Posted October 8, 2014 I'm fond of using any of the laundry dryer sheets. Guess the skeeters don't like the smell.
Rare Keith1010 Posted October 8, 2014 #7 Share Posted October 8, 2014 I would bring something that you can wipe or rub on. We have never needed it there and I am one of those people that if only one out of 100 people get stung it will be me. Keith
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 8, 2014 #8 Share Posted October 8, 2014 I buy the wipes -- OFF with Deet. We use them when we know that our tour will be taking us to flower gardens, etc.
Rare Keith1010 Posted October 8, 2014 #9 Share Posted October 8, 2014 I wanted to add to my earlier post. This is the best insect repellent I have ever used. I comes in a couple of different containers but this one is easy to use as it has an applicator. Very effective and very easy to put on. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JVB44E/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Keith
chengkp75 Posted October 8, 2014 #10 Share Posted October 8, 2014 Personal favorite for all insects including those darn black flies that will get in your mouth every spring in Maine: Ben's 100. It's 100% DEET.
092306 Posted October 8, 2014 #11 Share Posted October 8, 2014 Does anyone know if bug spray expires? I've had a bottle for a while and I can't find an expiration date on it. Was wondering if it loses effectiveness.
Nebr.cruiser Posted October 8, 2014 #12 Share Posted October 8, 2014 We've actually never needed it in quite a few Caribbean cruises, but I always bring a small (travel size) bottle along just in case. Unless you are going deep into the jungle, or are there early morning or late in the evening, I've never seen many bugs. I just use something with DEET. Marie51 Posted October 8, 2014 #13 Share Posted October 8, 2014 I've only had a problem with mosquitos twice in many cruises to the Caribbean. Once was on the Tulum excursion in Cozumel and the other was the Martha Brae rafting in Jamaica. other than this bugs have not been a problem. Philob Posted October 8, 2014 #14 Share Posted October 8, 2014 Pump spray or wipes only. Never aerosol; just gets everywhere you don't want it to go.

navybankerteacher Posted October 8, 2014 #17 Share Posted October 8, 2014 Bull Frog "Mosquito Coast" is a combined SPF 30 sunblock and a very effective insect repellant.
SuiteTraveler Posted October 8, 2014 #18 Share Posted October 8, 2014 (edited) Through over twenty trips to the Caribbean, I've never had even one mosquito bite. However, where I live, there are plenty of Mosquitos and the Off Clip on is the best way to get rid of them as you are not putting anything directly on your skin: http://www.amazon.com/OFF-MOSQUITO-CLIP-ON-FAN-STRTR/dp/B00DF970FQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412799765&sr=8-1&keywords=off+clip+on+mosquito Edited October 8, 2014 by SuiteTraveler

Nukesailor Posted October 9, 2014 #20 Share Posted October 9, 2014 Just a warning - DEET melts some plastics such as watch crystals, plastic camera bodies and breathable waterproof fabrics (Gore-Tex), among others. The higher the concentration, the greater the damage. Be careful applying it. We've been throughout the Caribbean and several places in Central America; we bring the bug spray but haven't needed it. The sprayer "thingy" might not work even though the contents are still good! LuLu
