Celebrity Dress Code Discussion Thread

The least properly dressed stuck to the buffet area.

What does that mean? You're either properly dressed or not.

If people wish to dress "Smart Casual" on Formal Nights in the buffet area (or anywhere outside the MDR) they are perfectly entitled to - they are not improperly dressed or less properly dressed.

Keep in mind dress codes only apply to the various dining rooms. If I want to walk around at night in shorts I can do so and many people go to the buffet in short or less than smart casual. Many are not aware of this and expect people after 6 to be either formal or smart casual but that has not been the case for several years now.

Went on our first cruise in December. My husband is a jeans wearing kind of guy and was really concerned about "formal" attire. He wore jeans to dinner every evening but formal, then khakis with sports coat. I wore sundresses, etc. dressing up a bit for formal nights. We wore shorts and flip flops around the ship during the day and jeans at night. We found you can dress up or down and still fit in. We really enjoyed Celebrity and will be doing another cruise to Alaska in September.

What I meant, was that pax wearing shorts(even bathing suits, which is NOT allowed) on either formal or smart causl night, generally were seen in the Buffet area. Shorts are really only allowed during the day, but plenty of pax couldn't do even the "minimum" style of dress in the buffet. The minimum dresscodes are not really enforced in Oceanview. Unlike Cunard, which has a pretty rigid dresscode(their schtick, so to speak)Celebrity really allows a lot of pax to dressdown once they leave the restaurants. Go to the Casino any night & you'll really see some poorly dressed pax. I'm talking shorts & tank tops, which I feel is not really appropriate attire at night(unless going to or from the pool area)

Now you are just being silly. You are saying that if something is not explicitly mentioned then it is unacceptable. You might as well say that trousers are unacceptable because they are not slacks.

I have worn jeans every single night I have been on Celebrity. If I'm not going to a show and the weather is warm I will often be wandering around the ship in shorts and flip-flops, like many others do.

It should be mentioned! that way it removes all shadow of a doubt. "Pants with no holes" is a pretty vague statement. Stating "Jeans with no holes" would certainly clarify the dresscode & show that Jeans are acceptable. As I've said many times, we saw very few pax with jeans on fomal night(except in the buffet)on the Eclipse.

Jeans were specifically mentioned as not acceptable until about five years ago. It was removed and from that time on they have been totally acceptable as "smart casual." You should take an Alaska cruise, just about everyone is in Jeans.

There is no dress code for the Oceanview other than a request not to go in there with wet clothes and the dress code only applies to restaurants and the theater. The dress code used to apply to the entire ship after 6:00P.M but that was also removed about five years ago. I think you really need to go read the dress code, because your concepts have not been applicable for several years now. Not even an issue anymore but you have been told this before. Nothing wrong with shorts or tank tops in the Casino, this is not Cunard.

I have also worn jeans nightly., Many of my jeans, like lots of people, cost more than a pair of good "slacks" or dress pants.

I've even worn jeans to dine with the Captain a couple times, with a sport coat of course, but no tie even.

I've been asked to leave Captain's club events as I was in shorts, and returned in Jeans, a few minutes later and was allowed in. The fact that they policed the dress code, turned me away in shorts then let me in with Jeans should prove to anyone that Jeans are acceptable these days for use as pants on any night in any venus on Celebrity.

Flip flops at night are hardly what most would call acceptable. On our recent Jan.18'th Eclipse trip..No where was it mentioned(in ANY daily paper or at guest relations) about jeans at night. It simply stated "slacks with no holes" are acceptable on smart casual night. Personally I DON'T take that as jeans. If jeans are acceptable it NEEDS to say it! During the day different story.

When Celebrity dropped the jeans as unacceptable the President at the time confirmed it to one of the long term posters here personally. And if you want to go do some googling, Michael Bayley was himself wearing jeans on the last Presidents cruise. Celebrity is not Cunard.

It's the formal night wear. It still states pants with no holes. Still really vague. It gives some the feeling that jeans are acceptable on formal nights.

Have not cruised with Celebrity for awhile. But thinking of booking with Celebrity this year.

Has the dress code changed? I remember then, "no shorts/t shirt policy after 6 p.m." That policy no longer applies on Celebrity?

So, can someone post in it's entirety and verbatim, the Celebrity dress code? Or link?

The reason I ask, is that on Princess Formal Nights, I dress in a suit and tie, and follow the posted dress policy for dining in their MDR.

But afterwards, I may change to jeans or shorts, casual shirt. No problems on Princess.

So, is this not appropriate on Celebrity?

Thanks.

"Smart Casual & Above" attire includes:

Ladies: Skirt or pants (no holes, rips or tears) with a sweater or blouse. Gentlemen: Pants (no holes, rips or tears) with a sports shirt or sweater. Shirts must have sleeves.

"Formal" attire includes:

Ladies: Cocktail dress, gown, or dressy pantsuit. Gentlemen: Tuxedo, suit, or dinner jacket with slacks.

The dress code in Celebrity’s specialty restaurants, including Blu, is “Smart Casual & Above” for every night of the cruise, regardless of the evening dress code in the main restaurant.

Note that T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps and pool wear are not allowed in the main restaurant or specialty restaurants at any time. Shorts and flip-flops are not allowed in the evening hours. The appropriate dress code will be enforced at all restaurants. Additionally, you are asked to follow the "Smart Casual & Above" dress code in the Celebrity Theater for all evening performances.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. A casual dress code applies at all time onboard Celebrity Xpedition®.

Further to davekathy's post above, here's a link to the source:

http://www.celebritycruises.com/plan-and-book/before-you-go-getting-ready?tab=before_you_go_getting_ready

When you get there, look for the Evening Attire tag and click on it.

That way if Celebrity changes the dress code you find the most current version.

Agree that jeans are allowed, but really tired of seeing the completely specious argument about how much someones jeans cost. The amount of money you did or didn't drop has absolutely no bearing on whether or not the outfit is acceptable or not.

Agree! Or the name tag.

The problem with the "no shorts and flop/flops in the evening" argument is that Celebrity's dress code is ambiguous. The context of the rule seems to indicate it only applies in the restaurants or the theatre, but to interpret it literally and out of context you would have to conclude that shorts weren't allowed anywhere on the ship at night, which is clearly absurd and does not match people's onboard experience.

The bottom line is that wandering around the ship at night in shorts is not going to cause an issue unless you try to enter the MDR, a specialty restaurant, the theatre (maybe) or a venue like the Sky Lounge during a special event.

I agree that it is not a valid argument in itself, but it is often used to counter the equally specious and snobbish "Walmart argument" where people wearing jeans are disparaged because of their perceived low socioeconomic class.

The last pair of black jeans I bought cost $7. They looked great and fit perfectly which is all that really counts.

I have tried to hard to not post on this topic but I must echo your

first paragraph and hope that the shorts/flip flops in the evenings

is only referring to the Main Dining room. I have seen lots of people

walking around very casually at night (especially in the Caribbean)

whether it be in the casino, in the atrium, or wherever......and

it will probably stay that way.......

I don't wear shorts at night because I feel more comfy staying in

my dinner attire but when someone is gambling in shorts? I doubt

Celebrity cares.

Really not ambiguous at all, here's the relevant part of the passage that Walt gave the link for. Please note it only states enforcement in the restaurants and the request for theater.

"The dress code will be enforced at all restaurants. And guests are asked to follow the "Smart Casual and Above" dress code in the Celebrity Theater for all evening performances."

Also, the dress code used to say that it would be enforced in the evening throughout the ship and was subsequently removed completely, those of us who have been around for awhile know what the dress code actually is. Perhaps if some would take the advice of the numerous people who have agree with this, the thread would not be going on and on over something that has not been an issue for at least five years. Most of us try not to lie on this board, preferring to give people the correct info.

It has been entirely appropriate for about five years now, Celebrity used to require the dress throughout the ship after 6:00P.M but that is long gone.

They ask that you follow the dresscode of at least "Smart Casual" in the theater. "Dave Kathy's" reprint of the dresscodes are spot on. Host Walt's link is correct as well. Unfortunately the dresscode of Smart Casual is not followed very well in Oceanview Cafe. During the day it's no issue,as many are grabbing a quick bite before heading out to excusions ashore. At night it's a shame some pax have no sense of decorum at all. I feel like it's a buffet full of "Onslows"("Keeping up Appearances" for those of you not in the know!)
