Ebola making a difference in your next cruise?

Perhaps they have kids or grandkids? I know one of the people mentioned is retired but maybe he has a young wife - people do, you know. Anyway, kids or not, guess it depends on how young at heart one is:)

Neither the hubby nor myself are young, but we are young-at-heart and spent a week at WDW and Universal, just us, just last month. (And would think nothing of going again next month, except we're cruising.)

It was our first time without the kids or grandkids and we had a great time! (been several times with them, every few years since WDW opened)

Anyway, back to the topic at hand...

THE SKY IS FALLING! PANIC! TERROR! ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!

IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION:

In light of recent national news regarding the Ebola virus, we wish to advise you that we have adopted new boarding procedures and screenings in conjunction with the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO). We are screening for any guests or crew who have visited or traveled

through countries with Level 3 CDC Travel Health Notices (Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea) within 21 days of a cruise departure date and they will be denied boarding. We are also monitoring bookings for any guests coming from these countries. Additionally, we will deny boarding to any guest who has had physical contact with or helped care for a person suspected of having Ebola or diagnosed as having Ebola within a minimum of 21 days before embarkation, until further notice. Holland America Line has robust medical protocols that are consistent with public health recommendations. We are monitoring the situation closely, along with our colleagues in the rest of the travel industry. Guests seeking more information on Ebola can visit the World Health Organization's website at http://www.who.int; or the CDC site at http://www.cdc.gov.

I for one am glad to see they are on the ball about this. I don't see more than maybe an hour or so delay for boarding.

I'd really like to hear the CDC response in regard to boarding being denied to anyone who "helped care for a person suspected of having Ebola"! Emergency room personnel, health care workers and emergency responders in the US have helped so many people suspected of having Ebola -but the overwhelming number of suspected cases were later proven to be not Ebola --- and yet they will be denied boarding unless they have had no contact with a suspected case 21 days prior to boarding. I also note that no mention was made of their fare being refunded in the event that they did have contact with a suspected case of ebola after making final payment.

Yes. It's not very well thought-through, is it? A bit of a knee-jerk reaction that I think will get refined in the days to come.

I still keep asking the question. Why are American citizens being made to jump thru all sorts of hoops, forceably being quarintined, scaring the ***** out of on a cruise ship because one person onboard may have been exposed, forced to sit on a tarmac because someone onboard a flight died, etc when all the government had to do in the beginning was ban travel from the effected countries until this virus was under control? Are we the American citizens so taken for granted by our government that foreingers are set on a higher plane then us? Now the government expects Airlines, hospitals and cruiselines to look for and enforce rules of quarintine/baning travel when the government wouldn't it themselves????

One ounce of prevention is always worth one pound of cure!

Yes.

A community college in Texas has announced it won't accept any international students from the African continent.

A Maine teacher was told to stay off campus because she visited the city of Dallas.

It's all a joke. If there is ever an actual emergency or epidemic I'm moving to Easter Island to get away from the crazies.

As many people have been married to Kim Kardasian as have contracted Ebola in the U.S.

...just for a bit of perspective.

Oh, and no one who contracted Ebola in the U.S. has died. (knock wood)

Which brings us back to self-reporting and being honest. How many of the above described will raise their hand and 'turn themselves in'?

Is this more theater and cruise lines worrying first about their legal department being happy with CYA?

Hi Sail. What I think is happening is that cruise lines are instituting measures in an effort to avoid having an asymptomatic passenger board the ship who might later prove to be infected with a contagious disease with a high mortality rate - one which no ships medical center is equipped to deal with.

The effectiveness of the new screening measures leave much to be desired. The fact that cruise ships are not equipped to treat a passenger infected with the Ebola virus is obvious. Recent events in Dallas have shown that a well-equipped hospital failed to prevent contagion to two nurses. Do we honestly expect a cruise ship could do better?

From everything I've read, I understand that the likelihood of contracting EVD (Ebola Virus Disease) on a cruise ship is extremely low at the current time.

Nevertheless, I applaud those with concerns who are brave enough to discuss those issues openly. I have no doubt that passengers will arrive at a decision as to whether or not to book a cruise under current circumstances as a the result of considerable reflection in view of the available facts. Also a gut feeling works well :)

Cheers,

Salacia

My cousin and I were on the Norwegian Epic and on September 30th after we re-branded in Naples she went to the medical center. We had minestroni soup but we are sure it must have had a chicken broth base. My cousin is vegetarian and became ill fairly quickly after eating it. She had also listed it months ago on our registration that she was vegetarian, so it was listed. The medical center flipped out because she was asking for imodium and quarantined her to our cabin. She argued she had no fever and she told them she just accidently ate a meat product. But they were flipping out on her and she had to stay in the cabin. I was allowed to run around the ship. They told her we were not allowed to put our luggage outside the door and we would be escorted off the ship after everyone else got off. We waited and waited the next morning, finally calling the front desk and the medical center- neither who seemed to know anything about it. We finally just gathered our luggage and walked off the ship and took a cab back to Rome on October 1st. It was ridiculous. Never been on Norwegian before. NOT a good introduction. I've been trying to find an email or place to complain, but they don't seem to have a contract us email.

Sorry this happened to you. Someone definitely dropped the ball on your disembarkation.

Unless they asked you if you'd been to West Africa recently, or had been in contact with an Ebola patient, it sounds like they were concerned about norovirus.
