First Time, Last Time, NEVER AGAIN!

Recommended Posts

First off thank you for those that have replied with either positive feedback or recommendations.

Also thank you for those that actually read my OP and then replied vs the few that just replied blindly.

For this guy/gal you can pound sand.

That said, I did kind of rush into the booking because after the May 16 till Octoberish the prices really jump because of summer so it was take this one or wait till end of the year or next year. I NEED A VACATION :) If you can't tell and this hoop jumping isn't helping.

I did say in my OP that we are laid back kind of people so just looking for shopping/sightseeing nothing low to mild activity. While only in our 40's we both suffer from issues that prevent us from being to adventurous.

As for beaches well I live in Florida and have plenty of that and I burn pretty quick so I try not to be in the sun to much and laying in the sun in the sand just isn't my idea of a good time I'd rather see things I could not see anywhere else.

I know I'm beating a dead horse but more frustration from RCI last night. I've been working with one of their "Resolution" team members to get answers about some excursions. To reach one of these people you have to call the main number and ask for one and then you go though this checklist about your cruise info where they verify everything before they transfer you which what that is they put you on hold while they find someone and then transfer you. So when this person calls you back if you miss the call you go through this every time there is no way to contact them directly by phone or email. So yesterday they called and left a message letting me know they have the information I needed. Rather then just telling me the answer I had to call this person back. I waited on hold for an hour mind you this is 9pm est at night. Finally the person trying to "Transfer me" tells me she's not available even though her message said she would be available till 11pm est. She then tells me she's spoken to her co worker who has this information and that she will transfer me to her. That person gets on the phone and says "Hello, how can I help you", I was like umm I was told you had the answers to my questions. Well apparently that was a lie she didn't know anything and took my name and number to have the other person call me back. Waited an hour for that, no phone call back last night either.

I didn't use a TA becuase I didn't think I would be able to get the same offer that RCI offered directly and have never used a TA for anything before. Maybe that needs to change.

Maybe you could save yourself the high blood pressure and maybe, do a bit of research on your own? Just saying. It's not like there aren't online avenue's for shore excursions.

I hope that is cheek in tounge :) Shame on me for calling a company I'm buying something from and asking them questions about it :)

Do you really expect every CSR to have visited every port and done every excursion?

What kind of questions are you asking them? They can only give you general information that is provided to them. Not personal experience.

It sounds like a lot of you are just ok with receiving crappy service from a company that you've have spent a lot of money with. I don't understand that.

I've seen reponses of "You can expect that kind of crappy service from all cruise lines" Really? I can't believe you all are ok with this.

Those of you that have been to St. Kitts on AOS or any other ship with RCI have any of you done the Senic Rail Tour?

Several years ago we did the Scenic Rail Tour on St Kitts on a Celebrity ship. They take you by bus to the train it takes you around the island, you see locals, monkeys and water views. The train was double deck, you could sit on top or inside. I remember the tour guide was very knowledgable, and we enjoyed it. I sat inside the rest of our group was up top.

Not cheek in tongue at all. I would rather them tell me "I dont know" than to make up some random BS that is not true at all.

Seriously, MOST CSRs at RCI have never even been on a ship. They certainly dont know pertinent information about certain shore excursions. Again, thats what places like this and trip advisor are for. Do a little research, stop being so dramatic and ask a few questions here and you will be surprised how much info you can find :)

I would never expect that from them and no I do not ask for personal experiences. I've asked things like time it leaves when it gets back. The reason for this is to possibly do 2 while at port depending on timing. Does it usually come back on time. What dock will the boat be at which is good to know for doing research of where you will be in relation to everything else. Excursions listed on their website that can't be booked online why is that will they be available on board, what night is formal night is there more then one, what other activities are on the boat that are considered paid activities, how do we reserver a table at the specialty resturant (since website doesn't work). Are there any events in the casino like poker tournaments etc.

All stuff I consider general basic information that they should know but they don't know. I've asked them why there is only < 5 reviews of any of the excursions but I've never expected them to have been on them.

......Like Cruise Critic!

But for heaven's sake do not ever, and I mean EVER admit you are ticked off with the cruise line when you are posting on the board for that cruise line. If you do the cheerleaders will flame you over and over again and totally forget about your actual question. So you could have just asked people about excursions offered by Royal on those islands or you could have posted your original post on the Carnival board and you would have gotten totally different responses. ;)

I have found Cruise Critic to be a wealth of information on various ship tours and independent tours. Remember, this is all very subjective. What one person may love, I may think is terrible. What I may love, someone else may think is awful. Even if you find that tour that everyone is recommending, pay close attention to who they say the guide was for that excursion. Some may say "If you get Bob, he has a lot of great information and will keep the more aggressive vendors away, but George paddles up to every vendor on the riverside and tries to get you to buy everything." (Totally fictitious names, just used for purposes of illustration.)

I do like the suggestion to join the roll call for your sailing. I have found out a number of things from my roll call that will be helpful to me. I discovered some excursions and private tours I had not previously considered. We will likely be able to join with some of our other members for dining or excursions.

We are pretty low key. Neither of us is excessively high maintenance. We don't have huge expectations. That's not to say that we don't expect much because we think the service will be poor, just that it doesn't take that much to please us and make our cruise enjoyable. In general, just the fact we are not at work and can do as we please for a week is enough to make it enjoyable.

I use Cruise Critic as a research tool to get a starting point on excursions or places to stay pre- or post-cruise. What is "worth it" as far as money or time? That depends on your budget and how you want to spend your time. That is different for all of us.

I hope the OP finds the answers he seeks- wherever he chooses to get the information. I found the customer service agents plenty helpful, but maybe the information I sought was not that detailed.

MrSmoofy -- you have gotten some intensive help from fellow travelers here in this thread and in the "All Things Adventure of the Seas" thread. We all know that many (maybe most) Royal agents have had little to no, on ship experiences -- so relying on them for honest, sincere help is tough to do.....so fellow cruisers can be wonderful.....and they will continue to be wonderful with their insights, because we all love helping and giving back to other cruisers. I can only thank the cruisers in the past who have helped me, by helping other cruisers.

Some people throughout society will tolerate shoddy service, but when you write, "

It sounds like a lot of you are just ok with receiving crappy service from a company that you've have spent a lot of money with. I don't understand that."

NOT everyone here tolerates crappy service, and just like we want to help you.....people may stop, because of your 'labeling of fellow cruisers'.

Over my 17 cruises on Royal, when I needed help, I made FRIENDS in the Royal Home office....gotten the direct contact access to those people and viola, they were incredibly helpful.....they WANT to help cruisers. But in their roles they get more people yelling at them or screaming at them, so enlisting their help and promising to do what YOU can to tell their supervisor how HELPFUL they were to you.....will get you more than you may believe.

I added some advice to you in the "All things Adventure of the Seas" thread from my personal experience cruising the S. Caribbean itinerary, even though it was on Jewel.

PUT a happy face on when you walk on the ship....and you will have a more likely time to have a Very Good cruise....maybe not great, since you may keep a long leash on the pre cruise issues you have encountered.

Yes to both of these comments. We have pointed OP in the direction of the Ports of Call board - I can see by his posts that he hasn't posted there yet. That is where the information is. It just takes a little time and reading, comparing prices, knowing what you want to do in port (beach day or sightseeing?). The info is there.

I have never had a problem booking excursions on board if I needed to. Even popular ones! My advice would be to go to the excursions page (without logging in to your reservation) and print off all the options. Choose what you want to do and then have a back up plan. That could be an alternative excursion or using the Ports of Call page to find a local option (taxi to your destination or direct booking once in port).

When I prepare for a cruise, I go outside the RCCL Web Site and put in the Ports we will be visiting and read recommendations for others who have done certain things, I also check the Ports of Call board on CC, other Roll Calls with similair itineraries. If I post a question, I try and be specific on what we are interested in doing. The more information provided, helps others on CC answer the question. I certainly wouldn't stop cruising with 1 company because I am not getting answers I wish. The people in the office won't make my cruise enjoyable, but the Ports, ship, crew and people I meet onboard, will.

I think most of what you are dealing with is 'Paradigm changes'.

When you're used to doing things a certain way, i.e. through Carnival's site, it is very hard to navigate through a totally different web site. But no reason to swear off any cruise with RCCL again.

Yes, change is frustrating, but a little persistence will fix it.

I hated Carnival's web site and didn't care for RCCL's new fixes at first either...but time and persistence paid off.

Still don't prefer Carnival as a cruise line, but now I like the new RCCL site well enough.

You should have a wonderful cruise if you can put these web issues to bed...Bon Voyage!:D

Some of this stuff they really can't answer, but we can.

What time does it leave - that will depend on so many things, what time the ship docks (it may be late), how long it takes for the ship to get clearance for passengers to leave the ship and so on. All of this has a knock on to whether they come back on time and so on.

You can reserve a table on the website, or onboard through your television or guest services.

Yes there are poker tournaments, I believe you can win a cruise (I don't play so I've never paid much attention - someone else will have).

Depending on the ship, there are other paid for activities such as the cupcake making workshop. These will be listed under onboard activities on the website.

There are also activities that appear in cruise compass that are either free or low cost. I have made jewellery for instance (it was fun).

There are also quizzes and trivia, dance classes and other fun things.

I am sure if you do a search of the royal Caribbean board on here someone will have put up some sample cruise compasses for your ship/itinerary so you can see for yourself the kind of thing on offer.

I agree with you about folks accepting poor customer service! I have learned to accept it from most companies I have to deal with these days! I can't stand our local cable company! They are so "nicety nice" on the phone but can't solve your problems. Our pest company is so nice to talk to on the phone and the service tech is super friendly and ontime, ec. ...yet they have been to our house 6 times in a month and can't get rid of the ants! On the other hand, our heating/cooling company drives me insane...they call to ask how the service tech did before the guy is out of my driveway! Really, give me at least 10 minutes to see if it is working! lol

Agreed some of these items shore side should know. However, some are determined onboard and vary from sailing to sailing depending on Captain and CD...so shore side has no way of knowing this in advance. Honestly though, some of your questions sound like questions they have probably never received and do not track information on to be able to give you.

A lot of this information is on the website! Granted, the website doesn't work all of the time...but it has not been down totally since you booked and began asking your questions.

How many formal nights? 2 if it is a 7 night cruise

Which nights are formal? Night 2 will be formal. Then the second formal night will be determined by the onboard staff. Could be night 5 or could be night 6...depending on itinerary.

There are compasses for this route posted here on CC. I posted the compasses from our Dec 2014 cruise on here. You can read through those to get an "idea" ....however, all info is subject to change depending on Captain and CD. Looks like I didn't post the shore ex brochure with these but I can see if I still have it at home....if you are interested.

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2140791&highlight=adventure+compass

I can understand your frustration at not getting answers. I just flat don't call unless I absolutely have to do so. First, I love my TA! She is amazing! However, I prefer to research things myself on the website first...and then hae her book things if I need her assistance. I agree the website definitely could use some work! However, I have never not been able to book what I wanted to book. I might have to check the website several times to do it....but eventually I can do it. We have said for years that if it were just dealing with the CSR and the website we wouldn't sail again....but luckily the ships and crew make all of the effort worthwhile. We love the folks and service onboard!

As others have said....the more specific you list your questions, the more specific answers you will get. For instance one of your early posts asks for suggestions on the islands....but then after folks start giving suggestions then you come back and tell us you live in FL and don't want beach, etc. Would have been good to list that first. (Hindsight is 20/20 as the old saying goes.)

We have not done the scenic railway in St Kitts but know people that have done it. It gets mixed reviews. If you are wanting an island tour, there are several private tour companies that get rave reviews on the CC ports of call board. You can email them and tell them what you are looking for...set the price....pick up time, etc. We either play golf or go to the beach...love Carambola beach restaurant/bar. We have done one private tour there with Rose of Rose and Jim's taxi service. We told her what we wanted to see and she established a custom tour for us at a great price.

Aruba...we usually play golf then shop and eat. Lots of shops downtown that you can walk to and have lunch. We really enjoyed doing an afternoon sunset sail on Black Pearl a couple of years ago. As far as eating near the pier, we love Iguana Joe's but there are some other nice restaurants also. The area out around Palm/Eagle Beach have some really nice restaurants also. As others mentioned, I believe, there are dune buggy / jeep type drives. Of course lots of island tours. Lots of boating excursions. If you are a "drinker" there are several "party busses" that bar hop.

As far as ST T, Havensight will be your dock. They only use Crown Bay for OA/AL because they won't fit over at Havensight.

As others have said, take a deep breath and calm down a little. Write out a list of detailed questions and post them here. You are going to get great answers / "opinions" which you will then have to determine yourself which to go with.

Please don't go on the cruise frustrated. Plan on having a great time. AD has a great crew and they will treat you well. Please go in with a good attitude though. I always get better service from folks when I start out with a good attitude. :)

The southern Caribbean is our favorite itinerary. There are tons of folks on here with lots of experience and knowledge and willing to share.

I am not an RC cheerleader even though they are the only ones we have ever sailed. They have definitely deteriorated in quality and customer service over the years. However, I think most companies have! I make the best of it and do what I have to do to make sure I get what I am looking to get.

I will admit this is going to be my 1st rccl cruise we will be going on oasis and admit I have had bad customer service from a couple people and waited for over an hour for help one day but then had some amazing ones. I am very excited to go on this cruise and will not let a couple BAD employees ruin my well deserved vacation. How easy it is to forget everyone has to be trained and they are humans not robots with human problems such as they may not be able to afford a RCCL vaction.

I don't see where anyone has replied to this so I will. We have done the St Kitts rail and thoroughly enjoyed. The train does a loop around the old sugarcane fields so you get to see parts of the island that you would not see by car or bus. The train has both enclosed and open air sections with the open air being on the upper level. You go through some areas with houses where the kids get delight running out to wave at the train. They serve refreshments on board and when we went there was a group of young ladies who went from car to car singing native songs. To us that was very entertaining. Plus they were extremely friendly and would answer questions about St Kitts. Don't know if you have little kids or not but when we went there were a number of children on board and they seemed to have a great time. For us it was one of the better excursions we have booked on any of the islands, but we are not huge sun worshipers so do not normally spend our time laying on a beach. I don't think that you will be disappointed, but then likes are different for everyone. I would not recommend waiting until you board the ship to book because it was definitely full. I realize that RCI holds back reservations, but I was glad that we did not take the chance.

Web sites are certainly not something I would judge anybody on totally so have a fun cruise.

There were ladies stationed in each car to give a running commentary also. We learned a lot about St Kitts.

I've never thought to ever contact RCL for my excursions. Once I book a cruise, I try to find everything possible about the ports I'll be visiting, either on Cruise Critic, or googling it. There are so many posts on the different ports and people have spent time posting trip reviews and giving information on this site to help everyone. I'd consider checking out ones that have actually been on the excursions and the ships and read their reviews.

Here is a direct link to your Roll Call. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2037456..

For me, the whole fun of the cruise is the researching and planning.

Hope you have a great trip.

This doesn't show up as an option under dining for me. RCI can't explain why but says they will get back to me on it but didn't offer to book anything said it might be full but was not sure waiting for them to call back.

I do agree that no one should have to deal with crappy service and since I retired from a service industry it saddens me that overall service has declined everywhere! I blame the "top of the house" and I don't beat up on the person on the phone just trying to make a living that's been poorly trained. Don't shoot the messenger sort a thing. This doesn't stop me from doing the things I want to do. SO, having said all that, I see some great suggestions here, take it and have a good time.

You nailed the review perfectly. I took this in 2013 on a different cruise line. Was worth the money for sure. We sat in the upper open deck. Just as you described each car has a guide telling you about everything you see. Live music and signing, refreshments. Was totally worth it and would do it again but RCI can't tell me why it's not available.

What kinds of things did the reviews say I can tell you I thought it was totally worth it. Very Very relaxing just sit back and take in all the views of the island.

Your initial post was simply statements. Even though you did not ask, posters here have been very generous in trying to support you.

Have you even taken any of the advice given and posted on the Roll Call or Ports boards?

You seem determined to make RCI provide you with the service and answers to which you feel entitled, as evidenced by the fact that you have already reached the level of the Resolutions Department. I can tell you, it will not be much different on any of the other main stream lines. You might consider that cruising is not for you, or book with lines such as Silversea, Regency, Crystal, etc.

Is it too late to transfer your booking to a travel agent?

Is it too late to get your refund? With such a negative attitude towards the experience, even of you are under penalty fees, I'd consider asking for a refund and finding a more suitable vacation.
