I can't imagine why passengers would want to wear a card on a lanyard around their neck either but there are many who do on all cruise lines. I would think that those who participate in that function would welcome the medallion. They wouldn't even have to remove it for it to work.

FWIW, some of us ladies don't always have pockets in which to place a cruise card, hence the need to "wear" our cruise card on a lanyard. Nor do we want to carry a purse while on board.

Maybe 'the desk' can punch a hole in the medallion?

So wear the medallion on your lanyard. Can be worn as a necklace.

Mrs. XBGuy is one of those who does not seem to have pockets and, often, does not want to carry a purse. Fortunately, her husband is a dude and always has available pocket space for her stuff.

I can see that lanyards are very convenient for many people. When IDs became required in order to get on an airplane, I noticed that many travelers started wearing lanyards that held their drivers license. Not a bad idea.

I went to Amazon and searched for ID Holder. An array of products popped up. Why couldn't something like this be used to insert a medallion?

The way I see it, the medallion would not have to be punched.

Exactly! That's why the Medallion is perfect. I see plenty of men who have pockets wearing a card around their neck. They may welcome the medallion as well. It would be nice if the medallion would track my steps and heart rate then I wouldn't have to wear my Fitbit.

I don't understand the issue. If one happily puts a cruise card in their pocket or purse,

why not simply do the same with the medallion?

There is no requirement that one wear it, regardless of any allergy.

The photo I saw had this silly looking bracelet which looked too bulky to put in your pocket, but maybe there are other choices. I will say, though, that I am not paying for something to replace the bracelet. In the wonderful world of cruise upcharges, just on principle, I definitely draw the line before paying for accessories so I can use my sea pass.

The Princess webpages for ***** show various ways to carry it. I won't purchase anything to display it but some will prefer that option.

The photo in this webpage shows the *****'s relatively small size next to an iPhone & could easily fit in pockets.

From what I am understanding, you only get the medallion. The chains and bracelets must have to be purchased. It's possible that before they mail them out there may be a way to order the accessories so they ship with the medallion. What I find so ironic is the fact that they stopped mailing out luggage tags and boarding passes. Mailing medallions seems to be a step backwards. May as well send luggage tags too.

the medallion is tiny. definitely easier to carry than a cruise card. it's also metal, so you can use a magnet and make it into a pin if you're the type that likes to flash your status colours.

this is sitting in the palm of my hand. not intrusive at all to me.

I'm not sure that using a magnet would be advisable around something that electronic in nature.

apparently it's not an issue with this technology. the rep for Princess was the one that suggested it as a pin using a magnet.

if you google RFID technology being disrupted by magnets, it appears to not be possible to disrupt the signal with a run of the mill household magnet.

Can you ask them to disable the part where it tracks your every move? This part is seriously creepy. Would make a person feel like a prisoner out on parole.

Because ***** won't be implemented until November the only available information is on the Princess website.

Will I be able to opt out of or turn off this new technology?

If you do not want to take advantage of the full Ocean Medallion Class experience, you can switch your privacy setting to "Safety Only" and enjoy the cruise the same great way you do today.

It is not the RFID technology I would worry about.

The Medallion has some reference number that has been loaded into what ever kind of memory it has. It is this reference number that is transmitted by the RFID technology.

Toi me the question is would a magnet destroy the reference number?

Looks like a casino chip to me.

I think the 'bracelet' is a holder for the thing.

Maybe there can be a $10 Bijoux Ternier holder for it.

It's so tiny.

Doesn't anyone worry about losing it?

(And, no, I don't "wear" my cruise card and have no intentions to wear this either.)

O·C·E·A·N™ FAQ

What's on this page: General FAQs | Onboard Experience FAQs | Post Cruise FAQs

GENERAL

What is O·C·E·A·N?

O·C·E·A·N — or One Cruise Experience Access Network™ — is a lifestyle that brings amazing travel experiences to you. It is about connecting people, places and cultures around the world.

What is Ocean Medallion™ Class?

Ocean Medallion Class is a new class of cruise vacations that feature a level of service and personalization that has never before been considered possible, especially on a large scale.

What is the Ocean Medallion?

The Ocean Medallion is a free, wearable device that facilitates extraordinary guest vacation experiences to make cruising more personal and simple than ever before. The Medallion holds your unique digital identity which is encrypted and communicates with thousands of sensors onboard and in port. It lets our Crew see information they can use to serve you better. That’s in addition to using Medallion for payments, unlocking your stateroom door, speeding up embarkation and much more. While you must carry a Medallion while onboard, it’s up to you how much or how little you want to take advantage of the full experience.

Will I need to pay for my Ocean Medallion?

Your Medallion is included in the price of your Ocean Medallion Class cruise.

How do I get my Ocean Medallion?

We’ll ship it to you in advance at no extra charge, so that your vacation experience is simple and easy from the start.

How do I carry my Ocean Medallion?

You can wear your Medallion as a wristband or pendant, or just keep it in your pocket.

Can I personalize the Ocean Medallion?

Yes! You can customize your Medallion with a choice of colors. It will also be laser-etched with your name, ship, and sail date.

What is Ocean Ready™?

Ocean Ready prepares you for your cruise, enriches your arrival and helps foster an enduring relationship for the future. Through Ocean Ready, you can customize preferences and input information to your online profile, helping you speed through embarkation and get right to your vacation.

What is Ocean Compass™?

Ocean Compass is a digital portal that provides you access to your digital experience dimension. Serving as personal experience concierge before, during and after vacation, the Ocean Compass has an intuitive and innovative interface. It is available online, on smart devices, on kiosks in port terminals, on stateroom TVs, on interactive surfaces located throughout the cruise ship and on devices carried by crew members. You can use the Ocean Compass to enhance your vacation, select experiences and create personalized event-based itineraries. No guest is required to have a personal device to access Ocean Compass. The Ocean Compass also serves as a digital media platform that features custom experiential media content as well as access to vacation photos captured during a cruise vacation.

How do I create an Ocean Profile?

Coming soon, you'll be able to create an account on Ocean.com or through the Cruise Personalizer at princess.com to access your Ocean Compass, which will act as your personal guide throughout the journey.

How do I know which activities are right for me?

In your Ocean Compass, you’ll see Notifications with recommendations tailored for you, from dining onboard to adventures in port. By accepting or declining invitations, our invitation engine will learn more about your preferences and so continuously improve the personal relevance of our experiences for you.

Will I be able to opt out of or turn off this new technology?

If you do not want to take advantage of the full Ocean Medallion Class experience, you can switch your privacy setting to "Safety Only" and enjoy the cruise the same great way you do today.

What happens if I lose my Medallion? How do I get a replacement? Is there a cost?

If you notify the crew that an Ocean Medallion has been lost, it will be identified and/or replaced at no cost. Your Ocean Medallion can be disabled at any time by you or an appropriate crew member.

Could other people find it and use it to get into your room or charge purchases to you?

The Ocean Medallion contains no personal information. Your Ocean Medallion is associated with your profile that contains your onboard security picture. If that picture does not match a guest when a purchase is being made or when someone other than the original guest is nearby, access will not be granted to a stateroom and purchases cannot be made.

Privacy Concerns?

All information provided before and during your cruise will be encrypted and is not stored on your Ocean Medallion. The most advanced software security models, tools, and methods are fundamental to Ocean Medallion Class. However, any guest is also welcome to opt out of all services at any time.

Does Ocean Compass replace the Cruise Personalizer?

If you're sailing on a Medallion Class ship, yes. And if you're enjoying a Princess cruise that doesn't yet have Medallion technology, you will continue to use the Cruise Personalizer at princess.com.

Will my Medallion reflect my Captain's Circle loyalty tier status?

Yes! And if you'd like, you will be able to personalize the colors if you desire.

Also remember the ads suggest that to order anything you have to use the Medallion with a Smartphone.

I don't remember seeing anything about a smartphone being required. That doesn't make sense to me since not everyone uses a smartphone and many who do don't carry it around with them on a ship. Would Princess limit their customers to only those who have and carry a smartphone? Doesn't seem logical to me. Guess we'll see come November!

I was thinking the same thing. I guess that's why they still provide the card. Although you can still technically use it to open your door or to make purchases like you would with the card. You just can't use the functions that require a phone. With all of this technology you would think that they would install a proper charging station in the rooms so passengers wouldn't need to bring power strips or outlet adaptors to keep their devices charged.

I suggest you take a look at the Princess video, a smartphone plays a predominate role in the Medallion video, and it suggests that you'll get the most out of the Medallion experience with your "personal electronic device"

Required ??.... Probably not, but ????

You've got right. All the money spent on their Medallion system & they couldn't think of providing a few simple USB charging outlets on the desk.
