LuckyStar Posted November 4, 2017 #176 Share Posted November 4, 2017 I actually love lanyards. I have to wear one at work. I have some pretty ones that look like necklaces. I even have a pearl lanyard. I know the gift shop on the ship had some fancy ones. They are anywhere from $5 up. I'd buy before you cruise since you can find them at the dollar store very cheap unless you want to buy a souvenir lanyard. I love to wear my NCL lanyard on Carnival. Pellaz Posted November 5, 2017 #180 Share Posted November 5, 2017 I think it’s so they don’t have to carry a wallet/purse. I don’t wear mine but I can understand it for people who don’t have pockets. I’d rather them wear it around their neck than pull it out of their bra and give it to the bartender that makes my drinks. This is pretty much it. The point of the Sign & Sail card is that it's the only thing you HAVE to carry with you while onboard; all transactions are made using it, etc. For me, part of the "fun" of a cruise is knowing that you can leave your wallet or purse back in your room and enjoy the "freedom from the every-day" that your S&S card provides. And absent a wallet, and even pockets if I'm heading for the pool or a hot-tub, a lanyard is just about the only viable option. I'm a Fed, so I have to wear a lanyard with my work ID. Part of my cruise "ritual" is the ceremonial removal of my work ID, and the ceremonial "donning of the ship-card." It helps establish that my vacation has officially begun. :)
pratzert Posted November 5, 2017 #181 Share Posted November 5, 2017 I used the free CCL lanyard from the casino on my last cruise. WARNING: The colors leach out of the lanyard and can stain your clothing. I had the red lanyard and when it got a little wet, the red color stained my light colored shirt and I could not get it out no matter what detergent I used, even after washing it 4 times. I finally gave up and accepted the fact I ruined the shirt. So I will take my own lanyard on our next cruise.
TNcruising02 Posted November 6, 2017 #182 Share Posted November 6, 2017 I bought these and they work great. My husband uses them. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G8MZOSG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I have a favorite one that I bought from one of my previous cruises. It's a little more colorful. My husband and I don't use the plastic pouches because we find they can rip and it's sometimes difficult to remove the card. We take the plastic pouch off of the lanyard and hook our card to the clasp. If we cruise on a ship that doesn't have a hole in their cards, then guests services can punch a hole in it. As far as what other people think about lanyards, I don't care. I find lanyards convenient for me while I am on the ship.
skiingj Posted November 6, 2017 #183 Share Posted November 6, 2017 For decades I wore lanyards in the military and civilian work. The last thing I want dangling around my neck, banging around and getting in the way on vacation is a lanyard. I think its great people express themselves with lanyards. I just don’t get why lanyardians don’t use them on land at hotels & resorts. Both the ship and hotel have the same plastic cards that have the same functionality. They both work to gain access to your room and pay for stuff. That’s what makes me giggle thinking why they’re worn on a ship and not at land hotels. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a cruise passenger at any hotel/resort near a port pre/post cruise wear one. I did think they were for newbies or status queens. But hey personal preference and what doesn’t makes sense to one, may make sense to someone else… Go lanyardians - be free.

I just can't decide if the ceremony should take place in the terminal before boarding or in the lobby as you wait for a drink. ;-) Makes me kind of want to do some sort of ship-boarding ceremony myself. TonyinMD Posted November 6, 2017 #186 Share Posted November 6, 2017 I bought a set of 5 from Amazon as they are like $6-7 a piece on the ship (haven't taken advantage of the Casino lanyards). I too wear a lanyard while at work everyday so I certainly don't do it for any type of fashion or expression, I simply wear mine on the ship because it's incredibly easy for me to detach the end and hand off whenever I am buying something (frequently with drinks of course), at the casino and when I'm opening my door, especially now that they have the hole punched in them. Easier than fiddling around in my pocket(s) and I normally tuck it under my shirt. To each his own though.
cb at sea Posted November 6, 2017 #187 Share Posted November 6, 2017 A man can put it in his pocket....so can a woman, if she has pockets. I carry a small purse so I have my tissues, lipstick, comb, etc...and mine goes in the purse!
dreadpirate3 Posted November 6, 2017 #188 Share Posted November 6, 2017 I agree! And to those who say it's tacky, so many aspects of cruising are cheesy, so why not go with it. I also think its tacky to hand a sweaty boob card from your bra to a bartender, but whatever. Sent from my SM-G930P using Forums mobile app I agree 100%. Wear it on a lanyard, keep it in your pocket or bag, but by all that is holy, don't pull it out of your swimsuit or bra.

They certainly didn’t give me the card and say “use this for all of your purchases while you are here.” If it's the boutique hotel in NOLO then you need to re-read my post as I said a beach hotel or beach resort. Still, I find it hard to believe they wouldn't let you room charge by a name & room #.
