Hurricane Irma Watch

Recommended Posts

This may have already been posted but just in case it has not:

"In an abundance of caution, due to Hurricane Irma, we will be taking our reservations system offline to avoid any potential issues as the storm passes over our facilities in South Florida. Our website and reservation system will be unavailable from Saturday, 09/9/17, at Midnight EST, and restored by Tuesday, 9/12. We are hopeful that systems will be restored late on Sunday once the storm has passed.

This down-time will impact all system tasks, including the creation of a new booking or servicing of an existing booking. Unfortunately, this down time affects both our online activity, as well as our phone agents. In addition, other services such as online check-in, will also be unavailable during this period. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Our teams are working hard to ensure that this pause in service is as short as possible. Please be advised that if you have a deposit or payment due for your upcoming cruise vacation during this down time, your payment is now due by Tuesday 9/12. Otherwise, we anticipate our systems to be back on line by this Tuesday, 9/12.

Sincerely,

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd."

There is absolutely no gas shortage. The problem is that the tankers cant get to the gas stations fast enough. The tankers are being escorted through traffice by FHP. Florida has a priority on fuel delivery. Over 13 million gallons of fuel was delivered to Port of Tampa and Port Canaveral this morning for statewide distribution.

So glad you clarified. It is very disconcerting when people put out incorrect info on any of these topics. Leads to so much confusion. But happens all the time. We are in the panhandle close to Destin / Pensacola and hope this thing misses us.

Not only that, but it is a monumental effort to use counter flow. Considering drivers would have to enter via exit ramps and exit via on ramps, causing an irregular flow of traffic at the intersections (exiting traffic wouldn't even see a traffic light), police would need to man each intersection for traffic control. With how many houses/businesses are unoccupied right now, the police need to be focused on other things.

During Ivan in 2004, I 65 was converted the day before landfall to all lanes north out of Fla panhandle and southern Alabama to Montgomery. Worked beautifully. 4 lanes all headed north felt weird but good cause it moved right along at 60 mph.

No I am not. But some of you who don't understand or live with Hurricanes are driving the fear. In Florida, you run from the surge and bunker down for the wind. People on social media are causing gas to be gone and clogged highways. Only Zones A and B and some few C's have been asked to evacuate, and to only an inland area, not Georgia or other places. Your hype is leading to the problem!!

A day ago, it moved east. Keys would get whacked but not devastated. Now moved back west.... the Keys may get absolutely destroyed I don't want to suffer, but man, I almost want to take the hit. God I hope this somehow ends up not being as bad as it looks to be....
I think it is safe to say we all hope that. And we all hate not knowing, but unfortunately storms are going to do what storms are going to do and our best still leaves us far more so in the dark than we would want to be. That's invariably a stress-inducing situation.

Precisely. I see that "hype" and all the other ridiculously over-the-top reactions to what I've posted as a reflection of those attacking what I post experiencing the stress I mentioned above, having it leaking out and affecting the ability either to internalize a different perspective that they don't like or to agree to disagree without turning it into a rugby match. In this thread yesterday one poster doggedly insisted that their advice, advice that directly contradicted what Governor Scott said and advice that would put my family in danger, should be the only advice presented. That's not normal behavior.

Definitely.

Best of luck! Right now it seems more like the storm is going to head up and cross right over us rather than going that much further off to the west.

I live in south Florida (Broward County) and there are definitely Hurricane Evacuation signs. I'm not savvy enough to post a picture of the signs in Florida but all you need to do is google them. Also go to Wikipedia and there is an entire article on hurricane evacuation signs and the states that use them - including Florida!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_evacuation_route

I get that but have never seen a hurricane icon painted on the road. Yes, we have evac route signs. Basically on each bridge from beach side to inland.

I remember a lot more signs than that. Maybe they were all put up in the 1970s and when they were wiped out by a collision or construction they weren't replaced? :)

There is plenty of good info out there for those of us who know where to look for it.

We live in Flagler County, just north of Volusia County and Daytona Beach on the East Coast.

Here is the Flagler County flood zone and evacuation map. I have added an arrow to the approximate location of our house.

We plan to shelter in place as there is no danger of being flooded out.

We live in the country so the first heavy clouds and rain will shut down our satellite TV and Internet. We expect this.

The loss of electricity is our main worry. We will sit with our fingers crossed and hope it doesn't happen.

Best of luck during the storm! We are under mandatory evacuation so late this afternoon we'll travel over the bridge to a friend's house that is not in a flood zone. Most of our neighbors are staying so we should be able to get updates as to wind/power/water during the storm as we did during Matthew.

Hope everyone in harm's way hunkers down and stays safe!

Hope everyone stays safe. We opted to leave WPB and head up to Orlando to weather the storm. Huge props to Hyatt Regency Orlando for opening their doors for pets and waving their normal fees. We brought up our 2 cats and dog, and they only charged us $50 for the animals. When we checked in, you would have thought that a dog show was in town - there were dogs everywhere.

Well, I've been following this thread since day 1, and Irma since she was "born" because of our date with Enchantment on the 15th and I'm burnt out! Seems we will sail as scheduled (fingers crossed). Flying in from JFK. I can share with you that at this point highest gusts for MIA forecasted from 11PM to 2AM is 50 knots. That's not bad at all considering where we were a few days ago! At this point our biggest concern is the condition of Enchantment and her crew (burnt out) after cramming 3000+ into a 2200 capacity vessel. Many didn't have a room to sleep last night. Great initiative by RC, but man that's a lot of folks on that ship. Anyway we're feeling grateful and lucky at this point and looking forward to next week. Thanks to all for the good info, however the detour in the thread over highway markings was a little off course!

Really didn't want to start another hurricane thread, but decided to anyway!

Been cruising since early 90's and had some close calls just missing hurricanes by a few weeks.

So many complaints and lack of compassion on the boards this last few weeks.

I live "in the frozen tundra" and have met many wonderful cruisers from all over the south, especially Florida, Louisiana and Texas. Love their football teasing and "how can you live in the cold/snow!"

Just wanted them all to know, my prayers are with all of you. We may not always agree on CC, but these storms should bring us all together. My heart goes out to the islanders in the Caribbean - thinking of all the happiness they have given me.

Thinking of my southern friends. God Bless and stay safe.

Pat

Enchantment's double occupancy capacity is just over 2,200 passengers, its total capacity is 2,730. It seems they are even over that total capacity, but that 3,000 was an estimate someone posted. I don't see this crowd trashing the ship, they are sailing for free on their employers ship, they don't want to lose their jobs.
