Packing cube recommendations?

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of getting 2 sets of these, in different colors: eBags Packing Cubes - 6pc Value Set (Peony) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T24Q5X6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_MAoFAbG2AH61B

I looked at the link of the sets you are considering. My concern is that there are too many "smaller" cubes and not enough medium and large cubes. For clothing, your med/large configuration is most effective, IMO. I have one set each of sm/med/lg for DH and me, and one set of 3-large. I mostly use the larges, and one medium for our trips, and almost never use the small ones. Just wanted to offer my opinion based on years of experience using these cubes for all kinds of trips, cruises and land trips, and all lengths of trips, including a month-long multiple climate trip. Those cubes saved my sanity on many occasions!

I think the 6 piece set is a good starter set that will give you a sample of all the sizes, however you will likely choose 2 of them that work best and end up wanting to buy several more of whatever size that ends up being.

I think KeyWestK is unique in preferring the large, as if you read all of the reviews on Ebags and Amazon, the majority of people will say the large is way too big.

However, large does have its place and it’s not a bad size. They are good for bulky items (sweatshirts & jeans), but if you take 2 large cubes and lay them next to each other, they will pretty much take up the entire length of your 25”-27” suitcase, so they don’t really keep stuff separated as much as the medium and small.

I mostly use the small, and then the medium. I can pack almost everything I wear in those sizes, including leggings and thin long sleeve shirts.

It may also depend on the size of clothes you wear. If you wear larger clothes, those smaller sizes might be too small. Maybe get the 6 piece set and a set of 3 mediums. Medium is a good compromise between the large and small, and you can probably pack most summer clothing in that size, no matter what size clothes you wear.

I have been using those clear plastic zippered cubes that sheet sets come in. They are perfect. Free, clear, and very sturdy. I have a couple friends who save theirs for me, so I’m good if a zipper breaks, which it never has. We love them for toiletries because they stand up with a flat bottom. Perfect packing cubes!

i seem to get by with the Medium for my slacks, blouses etc and only used the large ones for my husbands pants or shirts.

cltnccruisers, we used to pack a larger suitcase plus carry ons, each now I have managed to reduce down to 2 carry on sizes. I pack for 7 days even for longer cruises. I don't pack anymore shoes then what I can wear evenings with my slacks that match so 2 pair maybe 3 max & repeat the following week alternating.

Karen I can use the smaller cubes for misc items, like night lights, charging cables etc. Living in warmer climate here in Calif we don't have much need for heavier clothing, although if packing a heavier jacket I will lay on the bottom of my suitcase and the packing cubes on top.

I have this exact set + a set of three medium bags. It worked very well for us. As I mentioned above, the small cube and the long narrow cube are great for toiletries but also underwear and socks. It is also good for flip flops (enclosed in shower caps). I found that although I used the large cube it had all sorts of stuff in it just to fill it up. It wasn't obvious what was in there at a glance like the others.

The set on its own it probably not enough for two people to cruise for 7 days.

I consider my suitcase to be a "packing cube"! Yikes!

I used to say this exact same thing. I didn't understand the value of packing cubes. But, once I got my first set, I was hooked! I now have a bunch of sets. Sometimes I pack them by clothing type and sometimes I pack them by day. When at a work conference, or multi-city trip, I pack by day - clothes to wear for each day of activities, and the clothes for that evening's dinner festivities. For cruises, I always have one cube for my plane carry on (hotel clothes, pajamas, and my boarding day clothes.) I then have a cube for my boarding day carry on. (Swimsuit, cover up, casual, wrinkle free dinner clothes and under garments) The rest of my clothes get packed by type. I have also started taking a sheet of labels with me where I have printed "clean" on half and "dirty" on the other half. As I repack my cubes to head home, I put a label on each cube. The dirty cubes go right into the laundry room and I put the clean clothes away. It makes life so much easier.

This is a great idea. I always over-pack and never wear everything.

Ebags- 90! Love them.

I am happy to say I have never had any defects. I use them for every trip, from week-ends at casinos, to 16 night cruise and everything in between. mine are used hard and still like new.

Couldn't resist buying new 'limited edition' colors/ or close out colors at a steal.

Although at this point, 90, I certainly have enough.

they are currently selling a new line. I think they are calling it ultra light. And there are new smaller cube sizes. I have no opinion about those. I don't need them, and am very happy with the ones I have.

I can fit 10 of hubbys dress shirts in 1 medium bag and they stay perfectly ironed no matter what. It is incredible how much one can actually fit into 1 bag.

I also prefer the medium and slim sizes, then small. I don't use the large very often and only have 6 of that size. I also have 4 shoes size. Depending on the size of the luggage, I use the slim or the small size to fit around the medium.

thanks to someone on cruise critic recommended them years ago, I have been very happy to travel with them.

I didn't embrace the packing cube phenomenon at first. But after watching my daughter use them on several trips, I borrowed hers and decided to try them. NOW I am sold.

I love using the small ones for unmentionables so that they aren't scattered about my suitcase. It's so easy to put them in a cute and then pull them out and put them in a dresser drawer.

I also used the medium one to roll and pack lightweight shirts on my last cruise. Easy to see exactly what I had and they all fit tightly rolled.

Haven't used them for larger items like pants, dresses or capris yet!!

Great idea. I save these bags and repurpose them. I don’t like to put our clothes in hotel/ship drawers as I don’t know what was in them previously. 😬. Thanks.

Just another shout-out for the ebag cubes. We love them for cruising, but when we went for a week at the beach, we carried magazines in one cube; spices, knives and other kitchen utensils in another; chargers for phones, kindles, etc. in another. It was amazing to have everything together for each "need" in one cube. Of course each of us had a cube containing swim suits, cover-ups, flip-flops..loved having everything together. No matter where we travel, we never need to go through the hassle of unpacking and re-packing our suitcases now, we just take the packed cubes and put them in drawers or on shelves and unpacking is *done*. (Well, we do take a sturdy garbage bag with us and throw all of the dirty clothes in that for the trip home!) When we came back from the beach this past fall, I put the cubes that still had some clean shorts/tops/swim attire right into my dresser drawers at home and will pull them out for our cruise in April and just add more clean clothes to them. YAY cubes!!!

I have used zip locks, old sheet set zippered bags, and packing cubes. They all work, but I use packing cubes only now. Love that I can unpack so fast when I get where I am going. Putting cubes in drawers and on shelves is fast. I do hang a few things when I get there. May hang a few more things in a day or two as we need them. Love my packing cubes. I don’t put our dirty clothes back in them. I just shove the dirty ones in a garbage bag for the trip home.

Darn all of you! When I clicked on this thread I was thinking "why the heck would I ever need these??" - now I'm over on Amazon figuring out which ones to buy.

You will never go back! I’m packing for a month away including 3 cruises. Don’t be afraid to overfill them. Wrinkles go away

That’s how they got me too [emoji23]

A couple years ago I heard about these and started reading reviews and all the sudden I had a whole container full of my own.

I also find the compression cubes and packing envelopes helpful. I have the Eagle Creek brand. The Container Store has a travel sale usually in June and I've purchased mine there. Last year I also found a great travel "purse"/tote there.

Enjoy packing!

hahah exact same thing happened to me! the ebags colours are pretty but they're pretty expensive and the shipping to canada is gross so I went for a cheap brand no one mentioned. They seem pretty nice and I'm excited to use them :)

Absolutely luv them!. I am an over-packer and they really do seem to make more fit in my suitcase. Have been using packing cubes for about 5 years, have told friends about them and given as gifts and all come back raving about them. I use mostly ebags medium and slim, but have a few sets of travelon assorted. Have not used the large. It is amazing how much I can get in one. Usually pack a medium with 4-5 bottoms (shorts, capris, skirts) on the bottom folded and 5-6 tops on top rolled. For DH can usually get 3-4 pants, shorts on bottom and 5-6 shirts on top. Find using several medium on bottom, then the slims and smalls fitted in the spaces, works well in 22” suitcase. Usually pack one medium with enough clothes for several days in my carryon under-seater. Also use a pack-it folder (eagle creek) for dresses or long pants, DH pants and dress shirts. Love the organization and clothes seem to arrive less wrinkled. Also, generally don’t unpack them other than things want to hang. Just put them in the drawers or on the shelves, makes for easy repacking when time to go home. Did a 3 week Italy, France, Spain land trip .... week in each country and made it much easier to unpack, pack ..... three weeks clothes in 22” carryon (though checked it), underseater and tote. The packing cubes were and are great!:D
