Is there one thing you miss about cruising that they don't do anymore?

-I never played bingo except on cruise ship the last night of the cruise when the jackpot was progressive from the cruise. I remember jackpots over 10 thousand dollars and someone always won. The theatre would have hundreds, maybe even a thousand people in it. You played until someones card was full no matter how many numbers were filled. The card packs were 5 or 10 dollars also. Nowadays the final jackpot is $500 or like $4000 if you fill the card within a specific number of balls played(very low odds of this happening).

-The dining was so much better even if you got stuck with some bad tablemates(only happened once) it was still much nicer than today

-The crowded and commercialized ports

Things I do not miss

-The higher price of the cruise itself

-Having a fun time and maybe overindulging a couple of nights and then paying off your bar bill at the end

My first cruise was on the 16,000 ton / 950 passenger Cunard Princess and I will always remember her very fondly. No ship, no matter the size or bells and whistles will ever replace her. She’s what started this crazy addiction to cruising.

I am guessing we all remember our first cruise as something very special. Our first was the early 80s on a line that is now long gone and ship then was old, old, old. Even then it was something so special. No ship has ever seen the same, never have had the same service and never have we felt so special. It is like that first daye, first kiss, first really decent job. Always first stick in our minds.

Just one?

-Free room service...full menu, all day

Others:

-Free welcome aboard champagne (okay, I only had it once, but I really liked the mood it set!)

-Mid-morning captain's message

-Lox in the breakfast buffet (this new mousse is a crappy substitute)

It's no biggie, though. I actually like today's cruises better than the old days. More variety and entertainment. Though skeet shooting?! I had no idea!

this might be due to the captain, but i miss the noon captain briefing. the captain will make an announcement with the ship position, heading, speed, location, eta to next port, etc.

I think it is due to the Captain. Some are cruise line ambassadors and some are just boat drivers.

I miss having a steward take our carry on bags and escort us to our cabin while we sip complimentary champagne. This was our experience in 2004 on Celebrity Millenium. We were in cheapest OV cabin, not a suite.

I had that on my very first cruise with Carnival in 1999, and when I asked to be escorted to my cabin on NCL the following year, they looked at me as if I had two heads.

The Carnival cruise was in a balcony cabin, and so was the NCL.

oh yes, the Lox; you are right, the crap they have now is awful. We go to the MDR for sit down a couple of times while cruising. That is where I get my lox.

As for being escorted to our cabin, I could care less and I see several here who miss that.

I think that they still do this. I recall this announcement on recent NCL cruises, but it might depend upon the captain.

What do I miss? I miss the days when Cruise Critic was something more than:

--What are they rules, and how can I break them?

--I know of one exception, so therefore you must be wrong.

--I'm unhappy, it is someone else's fault, and I want compensation.

It is always about how it was "better in the past"...

The idiom that familiarity breeds contempt is an old one. It means that the more comfortable one becomes with something the more likely they are to see the flaws in that thing. For instance, a person's feelings about a particular thing can go from optimistic, to complacent, to spiteful without that particular thing changing at all. The day to day proximity to the thing results in a person's mind looking for ways to keep it interesting.

The idea that "familiarity breeds contempt" or "the honeymoon is over" or "the sheen is off of the apple" has been around a long time. Things often don't "seem" to be as good as they were "in the beginning". When you took your first cruise, everything was new. Now you know what to expect, you know the routine, and it isn't new and exciting as it once was.

We hear a lot of anectdotal evidence that things are different, but no examples, no facts, no evidence. Interesting that despite the fact that this is just a fact of the human condition, we have a hard time admitting that things just might not be as bad as they "seem".

I guess nothing beats the "good old days".

Pretty sure you can still get lox. Just have to ask for it at the buffet or just go to the MDR.

I don’t get the lobster thing. Do the people that miss the lobster not have a red lobster near them? Cause the lobsters on the cruise ships were small and not that great, even red lobster was better than them. And the free room service... it’s $8.00. Big deal. Prices of cruises are much less these days.

One thing no one has mentioned that I miss: a dedicated disco/dance club.

My first cruise was in the early 2000s, and the nightclub often seemed to be the center of activity after the late show. Now, with so many other options, the dance club (when there is one) can be a ghost town. We were excited to find a hopping disco on the Oasis, but then realized that RCL was pulling them off of their older ships in favor of additional cabins. On Celebrity, the DJ worked entirely as a silent disco in random spaces on the ship; headphones on with music piped in. While still fun, a very different vibe from a communal, loud club.

It's just strange that as the ships are getting bigger, with more diverse offerings, a nightclub is often not one of them.

I miss the steel drum bands and consistent upbeat Caribbean themed music at the pool. I'm sure they are catering to different tastes in music, but I still miss that big time.

One thing I really like now that I never had when I first cruised in the 80s and 90s are the affordable balcony cabins. I don't know how I ever managed on a cruise without one as I just love having private outdoor space.

The OK, but not over the top wonderful food means I never have to worry about gaining weight on a cruise anymore -- pluses and minuses. lol

I miss being offered a glass of champagne or juice upon boarding with musicians playing.

-Miss Godiva chocolates in Suites.

-Miss being able to bring bottled water and Coke onboard.

-Miss Suites able to enjoy promos without additional gratuities added to cruise fare.

-Miss great staff who are no longer with NCL. (PREM!!) and many others.

-Miss having HD who is proactive and responsive to guests issues.

_Miss the earlier NCL that got us excited about cruising again. (Circa 2008)

I guess we are sounding like older folks who keep saying.” Remember the good old days when......”
