Nieuw Statendam Signature Suite bathtubs gone!!

My TA was just advised this morning the new ship does not have bathtubs in this room category and offered us an upsell to a Neptune for $2000

We booked our 7 day Mar. 3, 2019 voyage 9 months ago and are just notified now!!

Wife is not a happy camper

I muse on whether the KDam will have the tubs removed during this drydock!!??

I have purchased a Neptune Suite and was sent an "Important Notice" yesterday that states "because new ships sometimes have design changes from their original specifications, we want to advise you that the suite you booked does not have a bathtub as initially indicated on the deck plan. Instead, your bathroom features a spacious walk in shower."

 

My booking was a guarantee although probably an SC I was told(it was a casino deal).  I certainly had hoped for a tub.  Do ANY of the Neptunes have the whirlpool tub advertised? When I pull up the Nieuw Statendam on their website today the SCs indicate a tub as do the SBs. I'm confused.

They need to update their deck plans.   Tub/Shower combos are the reason we book a Signature Suite.

 

Thanks so much for the heads up.  I'll be steering clear of the Nieuw Statendam.

bobpell - I don't blame your wife for not being a happy camper.  I'd be unhappy as well.

 

This seems strange to me consering how much space is in these two categories?

Probably safety, mobility and water conservation issues went into this decision.

I'm short and I've had a leg injury that was not diagnosed for a long time. Stepping into a shower/tub combo is difficult and has the potential for falls, especially when stepping out with wet feet. HAL probably assessed the safety of the setups and decided that a shower alone was safer for their passengers. Count me as one who would be happy with the change.

I am also one who has not been able to use a bath tub in many years.  And would welcome a larger shower.

We've been in some really deep tubs over the years.   I remember on of our dining companions freaking out over the tubs on the Legend of the Seas.  The worst was the Enchantment with those grab bars actually on the tub edges.  Thought they would help, but they didn't.  Tried a bathroom chair on the Radiance of the Seas, and that ended up being harder than just stepping into the tub. 

 

I want to see some photos of the new showers.

 

I also wonder if they did a survey w/ the stewards to determine the percentage of passengers that only used the shower.

Recognizing it is not the same thing, but ships still have the hot tubs and thermal spa for relaxing deep soak options.

I wonder if "walk in" shower is a "roll in" shower?  With the age of HAL guests, it may make sense to have showers that are accessible for all rather than tubs that older adults may have problems with entering/exiiting.   Or, they could install a few of those "walk in" jetted tubs that are advertised on TV 😉

Given the choice, I'd always take a shower over a tub, and I suspect that applies to the majority of passengers these days.

Those of us in drought-plagued Southern California have now become quite used  to sponge baths most of the time - or what got referred to as "ship board showers" by those on smaller water craft. The idea of filling an entire tub with water, using it once and then letting it drain away is the stuff of both nightmares and fantasy for a lot of us.   No even saving it in buckets for the gardens!?!

I remember when the Kdam first started we booked a Signature Suite and discovered the tub was not a Jacuzzi and only had a pull up wand.

The glass doored  shower was at the end of the V shaped tub and was so narrow you did not dare drop your face cloth!!

Maybe the marine Architect eliminated both problems with this large shower...just saying??

This is very interesting, thanks for the info!   We were on our first HAL cruise a few months ago, in a Signature Suite on the Zuiderdam.  As a short person, and especially when I'm aboard a moving ship, I much prefer a real stall shower to a shower/tub combo, but that little stand up shower was pretty narrow (and the shower curtain, well, it's certainly been written about on here before ).   It will be interesting to see if they are using the space now for a genuine stall shower with a glass door...

We did two side-by-sides last May.  A Neptune on the Nieuw Amsterdam and a Vista on the Emerald Princess.  DH really liked the glass shower door on the Emerald Princess. 

 

Never seen a shower curtain in either a tub or stall that didn't flood our bathroom.  Sometimes, the pool towels are used to mop the mess in the bathroom.

While I understand the safety issues for many in getting in and out of a tub for the shower, the challenge of shower stall only is . . . Where to shave one's legs?

Keep the bottom of the curtain inside the tub when you shower!

There is usually a small bar in one corner of the shower enclosure on which to place your foot when shaving your legs.

Try that, but the curtain always migrates out.

I think people lost track of the point of this thread.  It was not whether one prefers showers or baths.  My goodness who cares!

 

Fact is HAL sold these Signature Suites with perhaps some folks wanting them because they had a tub.  Thanks to the OP for 

posting this.

The walk in showers that we have had on HAL ships are not roll in showers.  The roll in showers are -- so far -- only in handicapped cabins.

 

The walk in showers do have a small lip on them -- about 1 - 2 inches high.

thanks Krazy!  I was curious if the new designs were roll-ins.   Sometimes, walk in means you walk right in - no lip.

We loved the new walk-in shower on the Volendam.  Huge improvement over using the shower in the bathtub.   It has a footprint the size of the bathtub and is well outfitted. Excellent tempered glass door.  The rain-shower shower head doesn't work too well in this application, however, as it doesn't throw the water far enough out from the wall at the end, so you end up having to stand quite close.  Nevertheless, a big plus.
