Charge for second entree?

It will be interesting to see if this spreads to other cruiselines.  Since I’m more apt to order 2 appetizers and a dessert instead of any main course, this doesn’t really impact me... but I’d hate to see this spread to things like appetizers...

I agree.  I love ordering two appetizers, usually they have so many good appetizers, soups and salads I don't even order a main entree.

You are correct. The price of the on-board drink package was raised at the beginning of 2019. Not sure if the price of individual drinks were raised and the pre-pruchased drink package prices seems to be "holding steady" from what I've read here.   Maybe with The Key, Royal felt they did not have to raising the price of pre-prurchase drink package?? I guess that can be viewed as "subsidizing" or "keeping the price down".

That got me thinking. Older people generally do not eat as much as when they were young. I know I can't. So on HAL, there could have been a lot of 2nd entrees that ended in the trash which may not happen on Royal. Hence, no need to Royal to charge.

Yes I agree with the decrease in appetite. However these passengers may have been cruising for a long time and have always had the option of ordering 2 meals. Maybe they are just ordering out of habit. At any rate there has to be some reason why HAL is starting to charge for 2 meals whether it be due to waste or profit. From what I am reading here this doesn't seem to be an issue on Royal and it seems like the Royal Caribbean passenger doesn't mind paying for extra service.

I was just reading the Key thread and there was a video a passenger recorded about their experience using the Key. They actually said they didn't know what they were buying. The only reason they purchased it was it was only a few dollars more than  what they were going to pay for voom.

I have to stay away from this thread in the mornings. It's 9:30 am and I'm craving a steak and beer.

I ate linguine with clam sauce for breakfast. Maybe tomorrow someone will post that they are charging extra for Bacon and eggs.

Like on cruise lines...airline status rules. We've gotten meals when others onboard got only snacks, and any beverages were gratis for us, but only non-alcoholic ones for others.

What airline have you gotten food and free alcoholic drinks based on your status only?  Or did your status get you upgraded seats with the perks?

Fuzzy math... drinks vary in price...and the main point is ANY package for $300-$400/couple is outrageous.

Daily price is daily price.  Or do you want to get really outraged a $1200+ for a 12 night cruise?

If $50 per day,  you have to see how your habits fit that number.

That includes fresh squeezed orange juice in the morning.  Plus specialty coffees.  So one OJ and two coffees is around $12 - $15.

A couple of drinks during the day.  $20 - $26.

A drink before dinner.  $10 - $13

A glass of wine with dinner  $13 (covered by the package).  $26 is two glasses.

A drink at the show or in the casino or before bed - $13.

Total is $68 to $93 per day.

So even if you cut out one drink a day from the lower price, a $50 per day drink package is still a small savings.

It comes down to supply & demand like everything else.

Where folks want to spend their hard-earned $$$ is certainly up to them. But the whole second entree thing is highly blown out of proportion...and not even a twinkle in the eye of most cruise lines. The profit / revenue focus is spread many other places beyond the main dining room food.

As a side note on this topic - on our Sydney Ovation of the Seas cruise there was no "lobster night". Rest assured it had no impact whatsoever to the cost of the cruise.

Yep you are right.  My DW and I are doing a 12 night Baltic in August.  Drink package cost us $1743.66 CAN.  ($1300 USD).  We choose to pay it because we know it is worth it for us.  I know for some it is not.

I've never ordered a second entrée.  I have gotten a 2nd App a few times if they are on the lighter side.

As far as I know, there's no lobsters served outside of North America.

I'm truly amazed how this thread has morphed form over eating, over drinking, economics & finance.  I'm still waiting for further morphing of this thread to grats,, chair hogs, and DL/CL complaints.  Did I miss anything.:classic_biggrin:

Do we get credits for skipping breakfast?  I find much of the prepared foods at breakfast way too greasy for me and stick to fruit and coffee, the occasional 29 cent cup of yogurt.

You know....that's an interesting question.  One way to really pin down meals for passengers would be to assign some kind of points system for the entire cruise...and then you could use them for your meals (or skip a meal) as desired.

Of course that would introduce total chaos into the whole food-planning system for cruise lines...since they'd have no idea how much food to prepare at any given meal time until people show up with their specific orders.

An easier system would be to have all dining room meals on your Seapass card, assuming you would use every meal every day. If skipping, no harm.

I'd be willing to bet Royal has conducted numerous "think-tank" sessions internally on perfecting the food-per-passenger forecasting process.

What about kids meals?  If we order a second one will it be $10 when kids don't even cost that for specialty dining?

You should go to the MDR which have both a menu plus buffet items.  At least at my latest sails on Oasis & Quantum.  I also, look forward to lunch in the MDR on sail days.

Let's see now--we've had economics discussions and now we're into modern math & inventory management--Oh the Humanity!
