Cruise ship excursion - can we leave 17 & 18 year old onboard?

Recommended Posts

Yes, they can stay onboard.

However, if they try to leave the ship the 17 year old will not be able to without you.  The 18 year old can come and go as they please.

Our sixteen year old grandson was the only one in our group of 8 who didn't want to do a snorkel excursion. He enjoyed his stay onboard by himself and spent most of the time alternating between the snack bar and the hot-tub.

Even though he shouldn't be, it's possible the 17 year old could be allowed off while accompanied by the 18 year old.

At that age I was living on my own. In fact had for over a year. And supervised a boyfriend when we went travelling by train all over Europe.

I believe they can manage on their own for a couple of hours. 😀

On Labadee our 12 year old granddaughter could come and go as she pleased.

Probably because Labadee is a private area, fully operated/managed by the cruise line.  In essence, it is an extension of the ship itself, not a true port of call.

18 year olds are adults, and they can do whatever they want, (except drink in the USA), but the 17 year old can't get off the ship.  Many 17 year olds move to college campuses and live on their own.  No one will care.

Thanks all.  Both girls backpacked through Europe last year so no concerns about them being able to look after themselves.

I was more concerned about Royal Caribbean's rules for under 18's as they are quite strict and I wanted make sure we don't break any 😁 So no alcohol for under 18's.  Are there any other restrictions for 17 year old apart from alcohol and not being allowed off the ship without us?

We have had to get a consent signed form from the 17 year old's parents and they were a bit 😲 when I told them.   She doesn't live with them (she attends a college away from home) and has been independent since she was 16.  She will be 18 one week after the cruise. It's going to be fun telling her she has to revert to being a child again but I'm sure she will be fine with it.

DS is 17 and looks 25--every time we went off in a port on last month's cruise (didn't go to Labadee though), after he pinged his sea pass card they said "Who is the parent?"--EVERY time, EVERY stop!  Funny enough, I think we were able to sign something on Disney that let him get off on his own after 16, but RCCL seems to want a parent with under 18's when getting off in port.

If the cruise is leaving from the US, neither of them can drink alcohol- cruise line policy is 21 and over.  The 18 year old can go to the casino but the 17 year old cannot.
