There is no doubt in my mind that cruise ships are incubators for germs and cruising is fraught with perils for weakened immune systems but that said, someone (passenger or crew) has to bring the disease on before it can spread.

My apologies to you too. Yes, I was a bit harsh. I guess what I meant was that this is a rapidly evolving situation and what was applicable yesterday is thrown out the door today. Out of nowhere a positive result is found. And then it all goes down the toilet.
 

I'm just really angry with what happened in NSW that day, we expect better of those who lead us but this let Australia down badly and at much risk. So much so I'm finding it hard to trust that the actions being done are actually the right actions anymore. 
 

I don't think it matters how the virus got there. It's what we do afterwards that is the fundamental now. We know it's here. Now what can we do about that to limit damage.

From what I read, the NSW Health Minister (Mr Hazzard from memory) accepted responsibility. That doesn't necessarily mean he was involved in the decision, but he accepted responsibility on behalf of the Health Department.

On the tour, we were a mix of  Aussies, Brits, Americans and others.  The most being Aussies.  Don't remember the exact numbers but at least half the 2700+ passengers were Aussies. The Ovation was there the day or two before, too

After a day of repeated questions asking why this was let through the Minister said "I’d have said yeah, maybe we should hold them on the ship."

 

That's not what I'd call admitting the mistake, let alone accepting responsibility. Just a disinterested comment on hindsight which doesn't even say they see a need to change anything, let alone take responsibility.

The interview with the PM today focussed heavily on Ruby Princess. I suspect what happened there has led to the new policy of every arrival into Australia being put up in a hotel and their isolation enforced by Service personnel. That would have prevented so much spread. Lots of digs at the mistakes that occurred. Lessons learnt yada yada.

9 more positive cases from Ruby here in SA today. That's 53 so far and we have another week I think to go. 20% of our Total positives are from Ruby.

FYI:  The NSW Health Department has sent a third survey.  Same as first two.  Just want to know if you have symptoms of corona.  Does not ask if you have been diagnosed.

a resident of a rest home in Napier has tested positive . Tracing of the very few contacts she has had has been carried out and the only lead is from a visitor she had , who was in town the day Ruby Princess was in Napier and passengers from the ship were ashore and circulating around town .

Oh no. Nursing homes are the worst places for this and other viral infections. I hope she had been isolated as much as possible before diagnosis.

Passengers were given a notice to self-isolate for 14 days

it was put under their cabin door.

 

Also many announcements made by the Captain during the cruise, if anyone felt unwell to present themselves to the Medical Center.

 

Border officer also mentioned the self-isolation when handing in arrivals card

at disembarkation.

Hawk’s Bay’s first confirmed positive was March 20. There are now 10 cases. The nursing home patient was visited by an asymptomatic person who later tested positive who had a connection to Ruby Princess according to the health dept medical officer as per news report.

'It is alleged a SYD federal MP "used political influence to expedite the disembarkation of the Ruby Princess because they had some high profile friends on board". The allegation comes from a senior hospital executive. Twitter ... do your work. Who knows more?'

Googled it and a paper in Cairns was reporting a possible infection 2 days ago and Tasmania reported a confirmed case from the C Spirit yesterday.

 

We did have a lot of Americans on board which is unusual for a cruise to and from Melbourne.  Also many others from overseas.  Some had been given a free cruise because they were members of the Casino VIP club.  Melbourne cruises are usually 95% Victorians.

 

I don't seem to have any symptoms so fingers crossed. 

I don't mean to finger point at the Americans just stating facts.

 

Is there any news of cases from the Carnival Spirit 2 day Melbourne to Sydney after the NZ cruise? I was onboard for that and there were still Americans on casino VIP deals on this cruise. I avoided them whenever possible.

Passengers were given a notice from the Australian Government Dept of Health regarding Novel coronavirus.  Under the paragraph,  Who is required to stay home?  it says:  "All travellers must isolate for a period of 14 days after they have entered Australia.  If you need to transit domestically, you may complete this transit and then begin your precautionary 14 self-isolation period.  If you have a layover, you must remain in the airport or self isolate in your accommodation for the transit period.  Refer to the isolation guidance information sheet for further information.  If you have returned from a country or region that is at higher risk for COVID 19 , you may also be required to undergo enhanced health screening on arrival in Australia."  Pretty much no restrictions or guidance for those travelling internationally. 

 

On board we were reminded to all self isolate once we were home. Not because we were told that anyone was sick, but because of the state of the world. 

 

Most passengers had flights out the same day, but there were a few who were staying a day or two in hotels and travelling to another city for transportation overseas. Since everyone on board was expected to travel two days later or like me continuing on the very next cruise to Fiji..there were many over 2700 who had to change transportation plans. Most international travellers spent the day at the airport.
