Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted September 16, 2020 #101 Ā Share Posted September 16, 2020 I recall staying at an apartment hotel in Exhibition St in Melbourne quite a few years ago. We headed out early one morning, just see in time to see the bleary-eyed half-drunk patrons leaving a nearby nightclub. It wasn't a pretty sight.

I for sure don'tĀ envy your lockdown. We never had anything like that here. Restaurants were closed for a couple of monthes but are open again with spacing. We have a few places we go for sit down meals and the standard take out joints. We haven't been to a "Pub" for a long time. Although I understand being safe, I'm not sure puttingĀ people who have done nothing wrong on house arrest is appropriate or fair. Set the standard and expect the establishments to conform and enforce the rules. I understand that enforcement is difficult but locking everyone up because some people can't follow instructions is just lazy on the part of the authorities. Our Provincial Health Officer just closed all night clubs and Banquet Halls. There have also been other changes to the hours of operation for restaurants and pubs. Be safe everyone, I hope that the powers that be will begin to treat you like responsible adults and you are granted parole soon. Lyle, we Melbournians are not under house arrest. We can can exercise outside our properties for 2 hoursĀ per day, families can take take their children to the park, we can shop for essential items. Single people can visit a nominated friend, we can buy takeaway meals. The reason this was implemented was to reduce the movement of people to limit the spread of the virus.Ā Ā I don't really mind the curfew as there is nowhere to go! Nothing is open! I would say that by far the vastĀ majority of people are following the restrictions and curfew. As Julie said above, the curfew shows who is out breaking the rules. Our lockdown is nothing compared to say what has been happening in Chile and other parts of the world. The reason that some lockdowns have not worked, is that they have opened up too quickly and a second wave has hit them.Ā Hopefully Victoria and the remainder of Australia learns from our second wave. Turns outĀ to have no public health justification.Ā Ā Ā I think the rationale was twofold: 1) the things you need to do can be done during daylight so it's reducing chance of unnecessary exposure time without impact (theoretically if everyone followed the rules then it would make no difference, but as they don't, if people do what they need to, it reduces the temptation time, and hence exposure) 2) social activities are more likely to happen at night, so it's a higher return in reducing risk of any time of day

Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted September 17, 2020 #111 Ā Share Posted September 17, 2020 For special occasions where we don't want to go out for a meal we go to the fish markets and buy a selection of seafood. Mostly stuff we can have raw or cold, but sometimes something that can be quickly grilled. Add salad, crusty bread and a bottle of champagne and we have a feast fit for the gods. I don't think there is any chance at all that the Qld Premier will open the border in a few weeks. The State election is on 31st October and so far, the closed border isn't having much negative effect on Queensland. The cluster of COVID infections that has been running for a few weeks started with two young women who flew to Sydney, then Melbourne (partied there), then returned. It was alleged they are part of a group that steals high-end goods in Melbourne and they were bringing those goods back with them for sale. Ā Talking to people in Queensland, I haven't heard anyone who opposes Anastasia's restrictions. The impression is that for the Labor party, the restrictions are a vote-winner so I don't think there is any chance they will open the borders before the election. My guess is that the border might open in time for Christmas if the COVID situation does not deteriorate.

I didn't say "No negative effect" I said "much negative effect". Ā Of course COVID has and is having a massive negative effect on everyone. At the moment, I feel the closed border may be helping Queenslanders more than if it was open and we had the virus spreading. Ā We do have a lot of interstate people in Queensland - people who came before the border closed and who are staying here for the duration. One of my cousins went for a trip in their caravan but had to return to Brisbane because the caravan parks are full of people planning to stay there for many months. Other people have come to Qld after the border was closed and have been prepared to spend 14 days in quarantine. Some of these people have relocated permanently to Queensland.
