Upsale Fairies

My DH and I have been on more than 10 cruises. I don't think we have ever gotten a call from the upsale fairy. We have a cruise on the Dream on Oct.9, 2021.  What are the chances we might get called? It is only the 2nd cruise for the Dream after Covid. By what I can tell, a lot of rooms are open.

had several calls, accepted two of those. The prices were just okay. I did not mind the extra cost since I had paid several months prior. Best i recall was oceanview to mini suite on elation. Other than the room size, i noticed the housekeeping team seemed a higher caliber and more engaging. It was worth it for us.

In my 20+ years of cruising with Carnival, I only received 1 upsale. Going from a mid ship, 8th floor balcony to a Spa balcony for $100. Took it and it was well worth it.

I got a phone call from Carnival one time on Veteran 's Day for a Dec 9, 2015 cruise. I was in a balcony on Deck 8 on the Sunshine, doing 11 days from PC to San Juan Nov 28 and 10 days back. For that 2nd leg they offered me a Deck 12 spa balcony for about $100 It meant changing cabins but I braved it out and did the sacrifice.. 😃

Cruised about 37 times before we got our first upsell email... not a call.  After that we have gotten maybe 4 or 5 of them?

NO  rhyme  or reason, I wouldn't be hoping too hard for it...probability is really low IMO

I will say this, seems like the majority of the time I have gotten them is when we bought a cheap inside room.  Maybe that is the key, if you are already in like a balcony or higher they don't bother.  I think we got offered to upgrade on a balcony one time, to go up a floor or two but wasn't worth the price.

I booked a grand suite on the Sensation for the 2/7/16 sailing which was my second cruise.  My first cruise was 6/15/02.  I got an email offer for one of the two owner's suites on 1/7/16.  I never called to find out how much it would have been.  I was happy enough with what I booked.  The owner's suites are right next to the Lido pool and all of that noise.  I could also still see through the blackout windows while standing next to the pool, so no privacy.

The other time they tried to upsell me, I had booked a 1A upper/lower porthole cabin on the Triumph for the 1/20/18 sailing which was my seventh cruise.  I got an email and a call on 1/15/18.  I called back, and they offered me a balcony under the Lido buffet kitchen for $250 total.  I had paid only $249 per person for two people($651.40 after taxes and fees).  $250 was alot by comparison.  I turned them down.

Upsell calls come ONLY when it benefits Carnival.  Most times they need your assigned cabin to resell to someone else for a higher rate.  Other times they are taking your cabin out of service for maintenance so they get you to buy a higher priced cabin.

If you want to increase your chances, book one half of a connecting cabin.   They are most likely going to want to resell it to a family that wants connecting staterooms

I have never gotten an upsell call.  My friend and I were in our hotel room getting ready to head to port when his phone range.  They gave us a free upgrade from an inside to a balcony.  Best upgrade ever.  I think those days are gone forever.  That was in 2017.  Leaving August 28th in an inside with 3 of us.  Would love that call again.  Not holding my breathe.

I've never gotten a call or email  where I would have had to pay for an upsell but I have gotten a call for free upgrades a few days before the cruise. I said YES

Thank you very much!

These are because your original cabin itself or a block including yours was removed from service during your cruise.  Those days are not gone but are rare.  At port upgrades are because the departing guests created a situation that your original cabin is unusable like destroyed, blood, sick, died, smoke, crime scene, etc.

Having read many of your posts since I joined, I have to ask. Are you, or were you employed by a cruise line at one time?  You seem to have a better knowledge of how things operate, especially the casino.

Out of 15 Carnival cruises I have only gotten one upgrade call, that was in 2019 on the Horizon, went from an Interior on the Lido deck to a Havana Aft Extend Balcony for $200.  I took it!!

I've received upsell emails twice from Carnival. Both times we had interior rooms booked so I'm thinking maybe that plays a part in it. We did accept the first offer since it was for a 4J room. I can't remember the price of the upgrade, but it was very cheap, maybe around $30. Something tells me not to look forward to any upgrade offers anytime soon though.
