$500 fines for Rowdy Behaviour

I am Platinum on Carnival but already jumped over to Princess and Celebrity.  Several reasons but the rowdy clientele is one of them (not everyone but they have their fair share).  Not sure $500 is a deterrent but it’s a start I guess.

 

I mean who really wants to deal with drunks and the subsequent craziness then ensues during your vacation.

I can only say that as I grow older, my lifes expectations change. 20 years ago, I might have been right in there with the rowdy group. Now? Not so much. Having a rowdy good time is not a new thing in 2022. It's always been there.

You have the freedom to stay where you are. You also have the freedom to change your expectations and the brand.

More and more Princess and Celebrity cruises include a drink package. Just sayin...

It doesn't mean rowdy as in you get a little loud when your number comes up on Roulette or they play your song in the disco.

 

It means rowdy as in you start fighting at the hot tub (as happened a few weeks ago on Sunrise) or are so violent the Coast Guard has to escort the ship into port (as happened over the summer on Magic).

 

Just like their $500 smoking in the room/balcony fine - having the policy is one thing, actually enforcing it is another.

Carnival is always looking for new revenue streams.   With the crazy number of rowdy passengers lately, this could put them in the black again🤔

Devils advocate. What does Princess and Celebrity including drinks have to do with rowdy behavior? A lot of those rowdy folks seems to have those green/yellow cups in their hands.

They ruined others vacation with no reguard for anyone else and what a example  people set for the kids . it should be 2000 dollars and made to stay in their room till the next port and have to find another way back

I’m going on my second Carnival cruise over New Year’s eve.  The other one I was on had an incident with a teenage girl which wasn’t nearly as bad as some of those recent ones.  They posted a security outside of the family’s cabin and escorted them off at the next port.

But not nearly as many 3/4 day booze cruises that Carnival offers that usually tend to lead to the fights that ensue.

I am becoming more cautious because there seems to be more violence everywhere.

 

In my lifetime I have taken the NYC subways late at night, hitchhiked around Europe, walked around by myself in Cairo wearing tight pants (a bit stupid),  have gone to discos alone,  rented cars and drove around Mexico, etc., etc., etc.  All of those actions are of much, much higher risk now. 

 

I started cruising Carnival decades ago, but now I am reluctant to go on any cruise or go to any place that could turn into a bad situation. That means I double check time of year, itinerary,  location, departure port,  ports of call, and so forth. I also keep up with the news.

 

I have crossed some destinations off my list as cruise ports of call, and now I am adding Turks and Caicos due to the tourist shooting this week.

 

I applaud Carnival for making this policy so public to serve as an advance warning. I do think all cruise lines should consider a similar policy.   I agree alcohol plays a role, but others lose inhibitions while on vacation. Parents who let their children run wild are pitiful.  I think some people may need to be permanently banned from all cruise ships.

We’ve never experienced this other than on Carnival.  I understand drink packages are offered on all lines but on Princess and Celebrity, the clientele doesn’t seem to abuse it as much as on carnival where people look like they’ve experiencing their first beer (maturity level I think).

Only if they enforce it!

 

But, it might also be a revenue loser in the long run as these passengers do not return to cruise again.

The people that may incur the $500 fine do not know this fine exist. They do not read the contract or read this site. If they are fined for bad behavior and never come back, good riddance.

Got back a few weeks ago from a 7-day cruise on Panorama.  Didn’t see any behavior I would remotely characterize as “rowdy”.  I think length of cruise is the biggest determining factor, but even on 3 and 4-night cruises I’ve taken, I witnessed a lot of over drinking (people puking or passing out) but never anything at all violent.

According to your cruise history, you've never sailed on NCL, RCI or MSC, the other three entry level cruise lines. Princess, Celebrity, and Holland would be the next level up.   Do a YouTube search and you'll find videos.

I'm always expecting some rowdy behavior on Carnival. Recent short cruise on Liberty was over-the-top in the hotel part of the ship. Our neighbors across the hall liked to have a party for about twelve of their friends IN the hall starting about one o'clock in the morning. There is no way to call security from the room and now one answers customer serive at that hour.  Making a complaint every morning at cusotmer service didn't change a thing. I wasn't about to try to speak directly to a dozen drunks. It's a party ship. I knew that. Too bad they don't insist on an IQ test before allowing passnegers to board.

I've never noticed that you can't call security from the cabin.  Major flaw if this is true.

It says you can dial 911, but then it also says "The following information is provided to you in accordance with the 2010 Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act." They have never provided this information to me - I had to dig deep to find it.

It was true the time I needed to call 911 from the cabin because of the male yelling, the thuds on the wall, and the female and child sobbing  that we could hear in our next door cabin (first day of cruise after embarkation day).

 

Absolutely  no way I could call for help from the cabin. No 911 and Guest Services did not answer the phone. I needed to rush to Guest Services where I cut the line to the desk, enduring the bellowing orders from the guests  from the "I am special" line to take my rightful and lowly position at the rear of the peon line, to get the attention of someone at the desk where I explained the situation.

 

Once that staff member made the call, there were several armed security guards and a Medical Center nurse waiting in the hallway in case medical treatment was needed by the time walked back to my cabin.

 

No one turned out to be injured. The adult passengers' right to purchase any alcoholic beverage was revoked and security made cabin checks for the rest of the cruise.

That paper document was in our room on the Mardi Gras. Was in a drawer but I had a copy.

We also jumped to Princess for this same reason and are considering other lines as well. A bad experience in June was the last straw for us. To Carnival's credit they promised to make it right and the policies we're seeing now reflect that effort, but we believe more time is needed before we can tell these policies are having an impact on this behavior and shipwide smoking. The continued super low prices aren't helping the situation.

The length of cruise matters and also which port you sail from, some ports seem to have more problems than others, it's only compounded on the cheaper shorter cruises.
