Would we feel out of place if we keep mostly to ourselves?

After 25 cruises on a mass-market cruise lines (mostly Royal Caribbean) I think we are ready to move on. I'm absolutely fascinated by QM2 and we are considering a cruise next year for our wedding anniversary. It would be our first Cunard cruise and our fist on the luxury line.

We are all for adhering to the dress code, love the entertainment choices (classical music and lectures on board are something to look forward to).

There is one thing that concerns me though. Yes, we would socialize with other people and would enjoy greatly many conversations with fellow cruisers. But we consider our cruises "US time" if you will.

My DH especially has to interact with people on a daily basis at his job and he treats any cruise as a way to get away from it all. It includes a table for two in the dining room and enjoying our time together.

What I read about Cunard line is that socializing is the big part of people experience on board of Cunard ship.

Don't get me wrong. We are a friendly couple who would smile and be friendly and courteous if you approach us in the lounge and would keep the conversation going . But the truth is we would like to enjoy our time together the most.

Would we feel out of place if we keep mostly to ourselves?

Thank you.

I think how we all choose to cruise is up to us, providing we don't go out of our way to upset people, which you obviously don't. Nor do we.

Sometime we have cruises when we are more sociable than others, that's fine. We always choose a table for two and so tend to "pal up" less than those on larger tables perhaps. But we are friendly to our neighbouring tables and passengers we meet in the bars and on deck, and sometimes socialise with them, sometimes not.

Go and enjoy the experience, QM2 is wonderful.

It is your choice whether to socialise or not on a cruise and you will not feel out of place if you wish to keep yourselves to yourselves.

A cruise should be what you make it. Don't worry about offending people, am sure you are polite and friendly but if you just want to enjoy the chance too relax and be together then go for it.

We took our first Cunard cruises in August and wondered what it would be like. We found it to be pretty much like Princess or RCI as far as the sort of people were concerned - no better, no worse. Cunard seems to be the sort of cruise line that ordinary working people aspire to and we met lots of those on board - people who save up for their Cunard cruise and who work hard in factories or offices all year. Of course there were the well to do who were Grills, but guess they dont hang about with the hoi poloi as they have their own reserved areas. We only came across a few people who were snobby and actually they had little reason to be so.

There was plenty of opportunity to chat to people if you wanted to, but equally there was the opportunity to just enjoy being together. And as far as the evenings go, the ship was as quiet as a mouse after 11.00 so you would be able to find plenty if places to sit and enjoy each other's company without having to engage in social chit chat - the Commodore Lounge is one place I can think of, but there are lots of lounges I am sure.

We prefer a table for two, and there are a large number of these on board Cunard so you won't feel out of place.

Hope you both have a wonderful time - we did!

Absolutely not, Aldeya. After all, tables for two are available and there are plenty of places where couples may sit together alone. You will enjoy exploring Queen Mary 2 to find your favorites.

No problem at all .

After 75+ cruises on many CL's , we now request a table for 2 and get it most every time.

The days of pot luck with table mates is over for us.

(fuss pots , braggers , lateness , nosey )

You will fit in just fine on Cunard .

You will love QM2 - we sailed on our first (hopefully not our last) transatlantic in June this year.

We dined at a table for 6 with some lovely people and enjoyed their company but otherwise kept to ourselves. There were many people at tables for two.

We were always able to find a spot to enjoy a pre dinner drink without being cheek by jowl with others … loved every minute of it.

Nope, that is pretty much the way we do it too. You will have a great time.:D

Just remember its your vacation and your heard earned money at work. If you decide to eat in your room just the two of you have a good time. If you want a table for 2(which I prefer) then fine. No one is forcing you to interact with other people so as long as your friendly. All you need to remember is a cruise is time away from your daily routine.

Enjoy your cruise.

Sounds like you are ready to do the right thing. Welcome to your new home. You will find, like us and many others, there in no going back.

Thus is how cruising used to be, elegant and gentile, which is now Cunard

Definitely go Cunard - we cruise alone at a table for 2 and that's our preference. We love to have dinner together every night & dance in the Queen's room together every night, and I've never given it a second thought. The beautiful thing about QM2 is that with its spectacular space ratio, there are many places to enjoy time alone. It's nothing like royal Caribbean though - there are no pool games, parades, or rock walls. But you'll get great lectures, dances, afternoon tea, and many other wonderful things. I do wish Cunard would put in an ice rink but of course that will never happen!

By the way - people in the Grills are regular working people too.... it's a great way to travel if you want to splurge.

There's no other line like Cunard in existence today, with its history. You'll notice it's grand maritime heritage everywhere you go on the ship.

We tend to stick to ourselves as well, and view a cruise as a time to disconnect from the world/etc. We book a table for 6 and enjoy the company (we always seem to get great tablemates!),but often elect to eat elsewhere or order room service. Personally, we do not enjoy the formal evenings and often choose those evenings for dinner in our cabin or balcony. I.E. It is your vacation and your choice.

Thank you very much everybody. Those are the responses I was hoping to get.

We are ready to book our first Cunard cruise and I'm sure we'll enjoy every minute of it.

Hi Aldeya,

As everyone has said, you can do as little or as much as you like, meet other people in the public rooms, or keep yourself to yourself, enjoy conversations with your fellow passengers, or spend time alone. There is so much space per passenger with many secluded corners, but also quiet bars, with relaxed sophisticated atmosphere (and noisier ones as well). You do want you want to do, when you want to do it.

I love strolling on the promenade deck early in the morning, it can feel as if the whole ship is yours. Or late at night with the moon reflecting on the water. I'm sure one trip will convince you of how special QM2 can be.

(There are many photos of QM2's interiors, showing the quiet corners, the open decks early in the morning, and late at night, on crossings and cruises, via the link below, I hope they help).

Bon Voyage! :)

The only problem with that is that the others at the table for six......that wanted a table of six, now have a table of four.

Brigitte, I think you raised a good point...there is a certain implied commitment to sitting at a larger table that baring unforeseen circumstances, tablemates will take their place at the table every night. But that's not without exceptions such as a one-off dinner in another dining venue. Standard practice is to advise table mates not to expect you for dinner in advance of those occasions (if possible) so that they don't wait for your arrival to order their meal.

Clearly, sitting at a larger table doesn't work for everyone, and it is not without it's complexities. We've very much enjoyed the company of tablemates on several QM2 voyages. But we've also enjoyed the flexibility of having a table for two on a few cruises.

Cheers,

-S.

I agree. If you know you're going to dine less frequently in the MDR then don't choose a large table because it is unfair to those who wanted a six. The odd night, no problem, just courteously tell your table mates.

Its just like a small town, large village you choose what you do and how you interact. As for dining we choose a table for 2 then we can choose if we want to go there if you have afternoon tea you can be too full for dinner and get a evening snack later in Kings court, many will raise ther hands in horror at this but if you go after 7/7.30 you can find a window seat in one of the window alcoves and be almost on your own. We have met some lovely people there and other times on our own, just dont plonk down where they are serving the food.

Also I reccomend the alternative dining $10 per person and the best food on the ship, book early and res a window otherwise you are in the walkway not the best but the food is fantastic. We have had the Italian night on numerous occasions and I went to the Asion Fusion on my own, hubbywould not go. I was treated like a princess by the staff and the food was exquisite.

And what happens on the odd occasion the whole table decamps elsewhere ?:D On a Princess cruise the 8 of us decided we didn't fancy anything on the MDR dinner menu so went en masse to the Buffet! Did wonder afterwards if we should have told the waiter, but we did apologise the following night.

You will certainly not feel out of place. We always go for a table of two. Sometimes when a couple or indeed friends go on a cruise they want to spend quality time together especially when dining.

We often meet other couples during the course of the cruise and on occasions have met for afternoon tea or lunch. So it is up to you when you want to mingle with other guests and also when you decide you just want to be by yourselves.

I can't help but think that the waiter was delighted. As much as we think they love us......less work for the overworked is always a good thing. :D
