Horrible experience on the splendor

I was on this cruise, and the seven cruises prior, for a total of 8 straight weeks. We were on deck 2 forward, Room 2216, just under the theater. While we were warned it might be noisy, we experienced none of what you mention.

The ship is currently undergoing a 2 week dry dock. The theater is undergoing changes, but we heard absolutely no extra noise from that area. (And, the grill is not in the sun.)

Sorry your friend had a bad time. For me, that trip will never be matched (even though I'm doing it again next year on The Breeze). I've never been treated better. The crew was unmatched. Friendly, courteous, attentive. The best cruise director I've ever encountered in Kevin Donohue. The best Captain and Hotel Director we've ever had the pleasure of sailing with. I couldn't even begin to name the officers and crew who were wonderful to us and went out of their way to make sure we had a good time.

The weather and stops were perfect.

A cruise is always what you make of it.

Jodi

My dear sweet Jodi,

Was the weather so wonderful that the cruise stopped at every single port it was supposed to? OR was the weather horrible and raining, that the cruise did not even dock in Honduras?

SO with that being said, you, my friend have no credibility.

Carnival acknowledged there was a huge issue with the sound! If there was no noise at all, WHY would Carnival give them back money?

If they can't be bothered to do it themselves, they should not get anything

Elaine, unlike me who has a thick skin, and who is used to haters and negativity on-line, these people are not. If I showed them the hurtful words that some posters have kindly written, it would ubset them. They are senior citizens who truely beleive that the world is a nice place.

I think she was saying that she doesn't think the 30% off is a good deal but I could be wrong. I myself would also be happy to have the 30% credit. Up front or later. It's all good to me. I'll sleep during the day if I have to!

After working night shift for years, I would have no trouble sleeping during the day. But on a cruise, you miss the activities, the ports, etc if you sleep all day.

A waste of a cruise to do that.

Is there a site to find out if your ship is going through a major demo or construction work on your cruise? I've stayed at hotels where demo was going on in that wing. It isn't something ear plugs can fix. You can feel the jarring, hammering, walls being busted into.

And so another lovely day on CC. You ask, you receive - good & bad. With a major issue like you brought up, better to just speak to Carnival directly and get your answers right from the horse's mouth, so to speak. The answers, like it or not, will at least be the valid ones. You always take your chances here, when asking for opinions....

Really? On what planet is this? Lucky if they tell you.

The Planet Earth? But if we ever open a colony on the Moon or Mars, I would hope it would be the same.

I have read quite a few hotel reviews where they do NOT tell you they are under construction, and why would they tell you? Then you might not book! I have also stayed at two 5-star hotels that had construction going on at the time. We were fine!

I don't believe we were talking about a review? Some companies actually respect customers still. They also want them to come back. I am pretty loyal to one company and I have good reasons for it. Once, they told me the swimming pool area was under construction. I did not care, but I'm sure some families with kids would care. Another hotel reported the hotel lobby is under construction. Both times "we were fine" because where the room was and why we stayed, the construction did not affect us. If you book on a website that is not owned by the company, than it is often omitted that construction is going on. However, you might enter into a situation that you booked a year in advance (or six months) for a wedding or other event, and 1 month before, the hotel finds out, they must fix a broken issue so yes, it can happen that you are not aware.

A good company that respects you as a consumer, will give you the info. Carnival wants to fill ships. People post on this board. Than everyone tells them how they are wrong. That's not the way it works. Customers should always get what they paid for, and a construction zone, is not what a person wants, than they should not get it.

for the record, I have definitely seen official websites of hotels tell you when a hotel has construction within the hotel AND around the hotel.

5 star hotels won't remain 5 stars if they tick off their customers.

My dear sweet adweenal: (hmmm)

Your original post never said anything about weather (or did I miss something)? It's a cruise. Out in the water. Weather is a factor that neither Carnival nor any other cruise line can control. Don't choose a cruise if the potential for rain or a missed port is a make or break for having a good time. When the port (one of four, meaning three were made) was missed, Kevin Donohue (the cruise director) and his entire entertainment staff did a wonderful job of revising the day's itinerary to add in plenty of activities for anyone who was looking for something to do.

Second, I did not say that there wasn't any noise. I said we (meaning my husband and I) did not experience any of that. I also said that Carnival warned us about the possibility of noise. We just didn't hear any. We knew, when we booked, that this ship was going into dry dock on March 6th. We knew contractors would be on for a few of the weeks leading to that day. (No one told us, we just thought it through.) We just were never personally inconvenienced. We simply never heard any noise in our room which was directly below the theater.

As far as my credibility, I don't have to prove that to you. I'm pretty comfortable in my own skin. I was there and you are speaking third-hand.

I'm sorry your friends didn't have a good time, but I stand by what I said. It is what each individual makes of it.

Jodi

ja_martin, hey, you are living MY dream!! lol Sounds like Heaven on earth (or sea). 8 straight weeks, lovely!

It was heaven on earth. Wasn't sure how 8 weeks was going to feel, but it was fabulous. The hotel director even offered us a suite at a much-reduced rate to stay on during dry dock. I said, we'd work for them during the dry dock. Not sure if he was serious, but we really did have obligations at home to get back to. While I may be retired, my husband isn't and we needed to get back to his business.

That being said, we are doing it again next year-on The Breeze. Can't wait, but we are doing The Elation first. We are stalking Kevin, the cruise director, who is going to The Elation. He was the best CD we've ever sailed with.

Loved Kevin also on Splendor! Next to Butch B. (now a beard) he was also the best we have ever had!

If they knew major renovations were being done all night long, perhaps consider not opening the cabins to guests? They had friends stay 4 cabins down, and the noise was minimal.

You are 100% rjght but they are just very greedy.

Oh and I did get food poisoning on the Conquest. Guess what I got? A free trip to Medical, some Zofran, Pedialyte, and a bottle of Generic Pepto Bismol.

I didn't ask for anything nor did I feel I was entitled to more. Stuff happens.

Ahhh, so nice to see the voice of sanity peaking through!

I am writing on behalf of family members who had a HORRIBLE time on the splendor.

they were on deck 6 just above the theatre.

The ship is under major construction, including the theatre. There was drilling, banging, crashing, and destruction ALL NIGHT LONG, for all 7 nights.

They could not sleep at all.

They begged to change cabins, but there were no available.

Carnival offered then 30% off of their cruise fare, but I do not think that is acceptable, they were not able to enjoy their cruise at all.

On top of it all, one person got food poisoning from a veggie burger.

Anyone know how to proceed? These are people who scrimp and save an entire year to go on 1 cruise, and it was such a disaster.

TIA!

I would go over to CCL and Heald page. Join Funville too.

I would. 30% is a nice discount in exchange for the noise. I would turn up the TV and wear ear plugs if necessary. I would use that 30% to have a really great time elsewhere during the cruise.

Heck yeah.... Thats two cheers packages and a few excursions, plus a few nights at the casino. 'Sounds' good to me. ;)

I had a horrible incident on the Splendor, they actually made me leave the ship after my most excellent 69th cruise!

I had a horrible time too--when they made me leave with you. Oh, I'm sorry, they did ask if we wanted to stay on during drydock, but after 8 weeks straight, we had to go home and do our taxes. Boo!

Splendor = my very favorite ship/cruise! Miss everyone and everything on that ship.

Can't wait for the Elation and Breeze coming up.

I am going on Splendor for later this year, and looking forward to it. I try not to buy too much into the negative reviews. But there are really just so few reviews of this ship here in the forums. Just wondering if you did a review and if so could you direct me to it. Thanks:) I can only imagine in my dreams that many weeks on a ship....and yes, I would happily take it.

and one more question...what makes it your favorite ship?

No review, as I'm just not that good of a writer, but I'll sum it up as follows:

The Officers, led by Captain Candeloro Donato and Hotel Director Nickos Batistatos, were simply the best and the nicest we've ever met. All of the officers were so friendly and down to earth.

Housekeeping, led by Sergiu and Anna. Our room steward was Harajanto and the floor supervisor was Venkata. They took such great care of us and Venkata was so much fun every time we ran into him, which was sometimes a few times a day. He and my husband almost always had a good laugh, sometimes at my expense, but all in good fun. I so hope to see him again on another cruise.

Entertainment, led by Kevin Donohue (CD) (currently on vacation, then going to the Elation), with Ilena, Nick, Chris, Sean and Caitlyn. We are stalking Kevin by booking the Elation for late November, early December for a b2b. He better still be on. He is the most fun, most energetic cruise director we've ever sailed with. Oh yeah, Becky (one of the dancers, who is now on The Ecstasy).

Food. Breakfast almost always on Lido. Very good. Eggs to order at the omelet station are always perfect. Oatmeal not so good. I keep breakfast simple. Lunch was almost always Mongolian (the best of any Carnival ship I've been on) or Pizza Pirate (also the best). I'm sure I ate pizza every day. Burgers I liked, but not my husband. They weren't Guy's. French fries were very good. If you like Indian, Tandoor was also good. MD food was hit or miss on the red meats. I always had soup and salad and then split an entree with my husband.

Entertainment. I loved their shows, but all of those changed with the drydock. Comedy was hit or miss, but always busy.

Ports. Alternating Eastern/Western Caribbean all to ports we've been to many times, with the exception of Amber Cove. It's basically a glorified pool area, but I loved it. Our first week there, Kevin, the CD, treated us to an excursion, but I can't remember the name of it. Missed a couple ports due to weather, but no big deal. We stayed on the ship a couple of times for Belize, just because.

The best thing about this trip was once you're on for the second week (then longer) everyone notices and they really do go out of their way for you. They are just the nicest people and we got to know so many that we are still in touch with on Facebook. Some have already gone on to vacation and may go to other ships, but there was no one that I didn't like.

The ship's layout is my favorite. The middle area with the big screen has the retractable roof. Movies almost every night, with popcorn, and a blanket, if needed.

I honestly couldn't think of anything or anyone that I didn't like. I just don't have one negative thing to say about any of the 8 weeks we were on from early January through early March.

We are doing this again next year on The Breeze, so they have a lot to live up to.

I'm not sure if any of this helps, but, if not, just ask and I'll try to answer.

If I could, I would go right back on The Splendor today. Whatever your vacation is, just enjoy, because tomorrow is promised to no one.

Sounds wonderful! I have always (7 Carnival cruises) for me since 2000, thought Carnival's crew is the tops. I went to Amber Cove on the Victory last October and loved it, even though I did not do much. I was very much affected by a flare up of back issues and could not walk much. But what I saw, both from the ship, and the new port area was lovely. (big taxi, was my lifesaver!)

Thanks for the response. I am looking forward to my cruise as always. I happen to love color, maybe why I love Carnival ship decors so much, and pink is way up there on my color scale:D.

I appreciate your response, and one day, hope to do at least a b2b.:)

I would be very very happy with 30%. We had the same thing on ncl. We had a cabin with window and the lifeboats outside. They binged and banged day and night. Could not keep curtain open because there would be men working right outside. If that wasn't bad enough the mattress was a sagging pancake.

Guess what we got. 200.00 onboard credit. So yes, take the 30%

You might get somewhere with the Carnival Corp. in Miami. Address should be on bottom of Carnival website under Contact us. I have gotten some help doing it that way. Good Luck to you. Next would be a news station. Carnival hates bad publicity. Again Good luck.
